Maggie Valley Resort & Country Club
Played On 09/17/2022Mix of parkland and mountain design
Booked this course as a single to be paired up with others. Unfortunately, the other players on my tee time were no shows and i was faced with playing by myself behind a bunch of 4somes. The starter (scott) and player assistants went out of their way to get me going despite the crowd. Just listening to them solve my predicament, I quickly realized how knowledgeable they are about their customers and their goal of getting everyone through in a timely manner. The course was in excellent shape, nicely defined fairways and tee boxes. The greens were excellent. The front was mostly flat while the back seemed like it was cut out from the side of the mountain. Hills galore! I will be playing the course again in the near future. Hopefully, the customer service and course conditions would be just as great.

Once I saw the course from the road I knew what I was getting into. Brown patches, bare patches, bunkers lacking sand, to spotty tee boxes. There were no fencing so locals freely and frequently walked across fairways and used cart paths for exercise. At check in you will notice the fully stocked pro shop as well as the lack of cars parked in its lot. I felt the usual rate of $120 was just not reasonable based from my initial impression seeing it from the road so I waited until the twilight rate of $69 after 2pm. Although I was not paired with anyone, i was still charged the riding fee for my wife who decided to come along. The cart attendant was very nice and even came by us mid round to check up on us. Due to the lack of other customers, I breezed through my round. I was pretty lenient on myself playing lift clean and place on the fairways because of the inconsistent conditions. The upkeep of the fairways , rough and bunkers I'll rate at a 1 out of 5. Bit once you get to the greens, Wow.. You can tell this is where they pour the money on. I'll give the greens an easy 4 out of 5.the layout of the front 9 was pretty benign. After the 12th hole, who cares about the rough shape of the fairways. The ocean views were incredible. This was truly an ocean side course. I even deposited a couple balls into the Atlantic. Over all, I feel that the impeccable greens, the back 9 views, the free shuttle to and from the Marriott, the accommodating cart attendant and the minty icy towel he gave us in the end.., make up for the unpleasant fairways, rough and bunkers. It is also the only choice for golf in the island for those who can't stand going through a week without swinging a golf club. All things considered, I'll have to give it an average grade.

Conditions for this time of year was better than expected. Greens were smooth and fast. It was 31 degrees so there were no one else in the course but us so pace of play was not a problem.
Birdwood Golf Course
Played On 10/16/2017Up for a challenge
This was a well maintained course in a very hilly setting. Being the home course for UVA, It surely makes one assume that these UVA golf team members must be superb. To start off, it was very windy. Accurate shots that cut through the wind is a must. Almost all the greens are uphill and even the downhill ones seem like they are hard to get the right club for. Greens are undulating and if you are not used to mountain golf, they are very hard to read. Just what's uphill and downhill was tough enough. The starter was kind enough to let me go as a single by myself. Personally I would have liked to have played with someone with course experience. The staff also let my wife ride along for free. The driving range was adequate. Overall, a no frills course that was well maintained. A challenging round but a great day of golf. Pick your tees wisely.
Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club
Played On 10/15/2017Must play
The tee boxes were manicured. The fairways were lush and the rough was uniformed in length and semi high. The way the course was designed, each hole with tall pines of similar heights combined with the distinct green shade difference of the rough and fairway add to that, the bright sand of the bunkers. No wonder this course gets compared to Augusta. The only difference I can tell between this and Augusta was that instead of the mulch they use around the trees, Golden horseshoe uses pine needles. Greens were fast but not so steeply undulated. The layout was challenging but it was very fair. Its not everyday I pay over a hundred for a round of golf but this place was surely worth the price. I was paired up with a pleasant couple who made my experience more enjoyable. The pace was slow but that's to be expected since the place was packed because it was a perfect weather Sunday. The staff also let me have my wife ride a long for free. The pro shop was surprisingly sparse. I would have liked to buy more souvenirs to help reminisce about how great a course this was. Overall a must play if you are in the colonial Williamsburg area.
Hawk's Landing Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2016Tough from the tips
Got a great hotdeal from GolfNow to play this course last minute. Maybe the guy behind the register knew that because all he said to me was head out this door, cart is downstairs to the right and went back to messing with his computer. The folks downstairs, cart attendants and starters were a excellent . Great attitudes on a very hot day. There is a night/day difference between the mens tees and the tips. The course was soggy so the lack of roll added to the difficulty. Many of the back tees require a bit of walking from the cart path. Not easy when it's hot and it's cart path only. Overall, my playing partner and I was gluttoning for punishment and that's what we got. Top sand dressing on greens that was aerated 2 weeks prior made the greens more smoother but the bounces on chips and putts harder to predict. Extra tip. The first par 5 and the last par 5 are very tough. Pick your lay ups wisely.
The Omni Grove Park Inn
Played On 07/25/2016Great layout
Course conditions were great. It is a bit on the soft side. Maybe because of over watering for the hot temps. Only negative is some of the mowing staff showed no regard for players. But the day was filled with incredible views and challenging shots. Definitely an experience to have at least once if visiting the area. Especially if you can get a hot deal from GolfNow.
Bull Run Golf Club
Played On 04/17/2016great layout
Fairways were neatly mowed, greens still show small holes from recent aeration. Rough tall and thick. Worth the discounted golf now rate but no way at the normal rate. They had a frost delay in the morning so my 2:06 ttime became 2:44. About 10 min wait each hole. . Done 7:40 wished i had known about recent aeration.
