Needs work and a Marshal

Like many older courses, with their huge facilities, it appears they have a hard time out running their expenses - so not much can be spent on turf management. Fairways are OK but burnt in areas. Greens were spotty and bumpy. Bunkers were different from one to the other.
For $40 its a good value - except for pace of play. Took 3 hours to get to the 11th tee. Did not see a Marshal until I asked the cart girl to talk to the proshop - the someone came out but by then we were facing a 4:45 round. Group in front played from the back tees and simply could not play golf. The starter should have advised them based on ability.

Poor management and bad attitudes

Very frustrating when you play a great course that is staffed by unmotivated people with poor attitudes.
Its a lot of money to play here so as a 9 hdcp who has played all around the world, I expect the service to equal the price. Not here.
Get to the first tee and the starter tells us he has run out of guide books (necessary for first time players on this course) - its prime season!!! Next problem was pace of play from second hole on - 3 hours to play the front nine. They did have marshals (we think) but they motored around the course quickly, never stopped to talk or explain. One marshal darted out from the bush just as I was about to hit a tee shot causing an errant shot - no apology just motored on. Finished in 5 hrs 20 min. Complained to the guy who wanted to clean the clubs - told him I dont tip after a 5 hour round - no comment. Complained to the 2 young girls in the pro shop - they had no authority. It appears everyone with authority had left for the day or hid from the customers as many were complaining. You waqnt $179 to play this course - get staff who understand a $179 experience.

So you stiff the guy who's trying to make a few bucks cleaning your clubs after the round? Exactly what did he do to slow down your 5 hour plus round? Did he clean your clubs? Then tip him! Do you also go to a restaurant and have a great meal, while the wait staff did a very good job, only to tell the waiter/waitress you don't tip because there was a 45 minute wait for your table?

Dont play here on weekends

Walked off after 3 hours and only on the 11th green - was going to take 5 plus hours on a short course with little difficulty. No marshal.
Greens were very bumpy. Fairways were good - rough was hardpan or dirt.
Lots of beginners on this course, the price attracts them.

What happened to the fairway grass?

Very good layout - very interesting course - nice views. Pace was good at 4:15. Conditions were poor. Some greens with large patches of disease. Many fairways with patched of dirt where the grass is supposed to be. Lots of dead grass (not dormant) in the fairways.
Potential to be a great course but its in poor condition.

Mowers must have broken

Was told to play here because of the air force base and all the jets practicing - that was the highlite. The first 7 greens had not been cut for a few days (true) - it was like trying to put on a tee box - very long and shaggy. the 8 and 9th greens were closely cut - then 10 thru 18 were a variety of lengths - never in 30 years of golf have I encountered that before. Impossible to play a steady game. I assume they ran out of money for the workers or the cutters were out of order.

beautiful Muskoka layout

This is not a course for beginners or those that can't hit it straight. Very tight and a few strangely designed holes, this is target golf for the most part.
You need to pay attention to the tees you play. Don't look at the yardage, look at the slope and pay attention to the recommendation on the score card. This has to be the hardest 6100 yards (white tees) in Ontario.

Hidden gem

Most don't know about this course due to its location but when the new highway opens this month, it will be much closer to many in the GTA.
Not a long course but tight with tree lined fairways, generous bunkering and a couple of water hazards. Great conditioning puts a premium on shot making.
Best value private club in Ontario.
