The Meadows at Mystic Lake

Nice range not well marked for distance. Nice carts with chargers and GPS. Nicely groomed. Very nice greens that are challenging and undulating. Chipping areas and approaches around greens excellent. Level tee boxes. Greens a little beat up consistent with public course. Well placed bunkers with uniform sand that are well drained. While there is a lot to like not the least of which is the setting, there we significant negatives. The course seems over designed leading to tee box carry distances over hazards that are unnecessarily long, one par three is adjacent to a parking lot without protective fencing, and too many blind approach and second shots. Finally, on approach to 18, in front of approach water hazard, there are four or so drainage grates at least three feet round that can easily eat balls, as they did mine after flushing a beautiful five iron. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful course just not a gem. To enjoy it, you have to play it often. A gem captures you at first tee and captivates you through eighteen. Would play again but there is a lot of great public golf in Twin Cities for this course to compete with.

Course in excellent shape. Fairway to green excellent. Range a cart drive away and up stairs. Hitting from mats. For an older player like me (70), the course doesn’t lend itself to walking. Even with cart, lots of walking up and down hills. Fairways challenging as are the greens, which are very challenging but roll true. Course really makes you think with lots of possibilities for trouble off the tee due to topography and elevation changes. It’s the kind of course one really has to get to know to play it well. So it breaks down to preference but any way you look at it, it’s one of our local jewels.
