Still in Winter Shape

For the time of the year, the course was in good shape. I played the east course which has the Zoysia grass in the fairways. Zoysia grass goes dormant in the cold months and doesn't green and thicken up until about mid-spring. The east course is a bit easier than the west because it's more open. The west requires a lot more accurate shots off the tee or you'll find yourself in the trees.

A Lot of Potential

This course has tremendous potential. It sits on some beautiful property, the Choptank River running along some holes, woods on many others. No highways within ear shot. I have played this course several times over the past four years or so. It's main problem has always been course condition. This time was no different. For instance, most of the sand traps had no sand in them and don't look like they have been touched yet this year. The course was sold last year. I was hoping the new owner was buying it to upgrade the course and not because it's just valuable property. They are doing some things, like removing dead or fallen trees, but it appears the maintenance staff is very short-handed. There was no one in the office when I arrived to check in, and one of the maintenance guys had to ride in from the course just to check me in. It appeared I was the only golfer on the course. It appears this is a chicken or the egg situation. Do you invest what money you have set aside on upgrading the course and have few golfers, or do you spend some of that capital on marketing in hopes you'll attract more golfers and improve cash flow while making the improvements. Other than offering discounted rates on Internet sites such as this, I have seen nothing on this course. Even though the name has changed from last year, I couldn't even find a Facebook page. Facebook pages are free to set up and maintain. With a dedicated salesperson, I could see many tournaments played here. Great for the course because they'd make some money, and great for the charity because they'd probably be able to get some of the best tournament rates around and, in the end, make more for their charity.

Nice Course, Mess on the Tee Time

I have played this course many times. For years now, it has been one of my favorites because it's kept in great condition. Only issue I had on the day was the fact I bought a 9:45 tee time and when I got to the course, a group of 14 was starting on the first hole at 9:35. After them was a foursome of women, then there was a twosome that bought their tee time online for 0940. We didn't get off until 10:20 or so. While the employee in the pro shop had us down for the 9:45 tee time, they apparently give preferential treatment to those showing up at the course without tee times. While we saved money on the round, we were treated like red-headed step children when it came to getting off on or near our scheduled tee time.

Nice Course

This is a very nice course, with some holes playing on the bank of the Wicomico River. This is a quasi-private club with historic roots. Fairways and greens were in very good shape. The bar and restaurant are also open to the public whether you're playing golf or not, and it offers some appealing food and drink specials.

Beautiful Course

This won't be one of the most challenging courses you'll play, but it will be one offering one of the best views around. Many of the holes are on the Choptank River. When you're not looking at the serene water, you're looking at the vast number of deer that snack around many of the greens. While the approach shots to the greens aren't challenging, the speed and undulation of the greens will certainly shave some strokes off your final score. Very fast and challenging greens, especially earlier in the day before the greens have grown a bit. I'd love to sit all day and bet golfers that they can't make the green on the par 3 17th. Very challenging hole with a long shot over the shoal.

One thing else I'll mention. Even though this is a high-end resort, I was pleasantly surprised at the prices charged on the beverage cart. $2.50 for a domestic beer is very, very reasonable. Other prices for food and drink are inline, too.

If you've never played this course, you should.

Early in th Season

It has been a cool, wet spring and there was a lot of standing water on the course, in the sand traps, and in the ruts on the cart paths. The greens had been recently aerated. This is a nice course off the beaten path. Middle of the week, late-morning, the pace of play is usually pretty quick. While this course has never been in pristine condition, it is a nice and challenging course. Almost every hole has large groves of pines guarding the left and right sides of the fairway. If you don't keep your shots in the fairway, you'll be wasting strokes punching out of the woods. For the money, you will be pleased playing Nassawango.
