The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge
Played On 09/26/2018Definite Be-Back
We had the first tee time out, and one of my players did not have the required collared shirt. Rather than force him to purchase a shirt, staff member advised him of the dress code for our next visit. Once on the course, we could tell the course had some maintenance difficulties with the recent rainy conditions. It appeared that the crew had started mowing rough for the first time in several days because there were mounds of grass clippings on every hole. Miss a fairway and it took a while to find the ball. Fairways were okay, lots of grass, but they had not been mowed in a couple of days, either. The greens were slow, but that's to be expected for bent grass greens in North Carolina in late summer/early fall.
Chapel Ridge is an excellent layout, and I look forward to playing it again when weather has not affected the maintenance schedule.
East at Grandover Resort
Played On 12/26/2014Christmas at Grandover
I took my sons to play Grandover East, which is one of my favorite courses in the Triad. Since it is December, we did not expect great weather, but it was a nice day with temps in the upper 50's. Check-in was quick and efficient, and the staff was cordial and pleasant. Since recent weather had been very wet and cold, I expected carts to be on the path, which they were. However, the course itself had drained well and was damp but not real muddy. The dormant bermudagrass base was good, and I could play the ball down, which was unexpected. The greens were good speed and true. We played our round in 4 hours, which was nice because there was a lot of play. We saw a ranger at least twice on each side, which helped keep things moving. All in all, it was a great day to spend with my sons.
River Landing at Sandy Ridge
Played On 8/4/2013Excellent condition
Although not a long course by any means, River Landing at Sandy Ridge is an excellent value if you are looking for a nine-hole option. I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course. The fairways were almost perfect, the greens were smooth, not fast, but decent speed. And you do not want to get in the rough! Several inches deep, and very easy for a ball to hide.
The only problem that I saw was that the grounds crew did not empty the mower baskets and left trails of clippings on some greens. There were also clumps of grass in the rough. To be fair, there has been a lot of rain in the area over the past two months, which accounts for the extra grass in the rough.
