Maderas Golf Club
Played On 01/24/2018Beautiful course conditions but Crazy Fast Greens
The starter warned us the greens were fast and slippery, but after watching the ball make a 90° turn on several greens I had to do a little test. Found a green on the back 9 where the hole was cut on a slope...set my ball down two feet from the hole and watched it slide off the green! Dang that’s slippery and maybe not fair!
So that’s a a bit of a nock against the greens keeper but heck it’s The Farmers this week and I’m sure he wanted to show how manly the green could be.
Course condition was great, much more lush than last time I played. Pace of play was excellent, there was no one in front of us, until we ran into a foursomes with rental clubs playing from the tips...struggled to stay focused watching them spray balls all over the place and then sequentially go to the green to putt out! Where’s a Marshall when you need ‘em. Thankfully we only had to watch that show for the last three holes.
Overall I shouldn’t complain, it’s a fun challenging course in a beautiful setting. If you can play it for under $90, which we did, it’s a helluva course!
Black Mesa Golf Club
Played On 04/06/2015A could be gem that is still in the rough
The course layout is pretty darn good with some spectacular holes however it is in really rough condition. If and when the new super/greens keeper gets the conditions under control it will be a fun place to play some challenging holes with plenty of elevation changes. The grill/snack bar is still closed with no indication of when it might open although the was indication if construction going on. I'd give it a couple of years before playing...
Also it was almost impossible to contact the club by phone.
Bristow Manor Golf Club
Played On 10/25/2012Lush country course
Played Bristow Manor last week with two others. The course was well maintained, with lush fairways and well maintained greens. Off the first cut of the fairway was a bit tough, hadn't been mowed in a few days due to the recent rain I guess. All and all the course played well from the back tees. Much better conditions than last year when I played and it was a dog track.
If you haven't tried this place recently, I recommend you pick up one of their half price green fees on GolfNow and enjoy. It's a heck of a great deal at $24! (which includes a cart)
Olomana Golf Links
Played On 9/30/2012Great golf value in Oahu
Olomana Golf Links can be a great value if you find one of the deep discounts on Golfnow. The pace of play was excruciatingly slow, but then I showed up behind a local golf club that had 12 tee times, some with 5 or 6 in a tee time. Despite the slow pace of play it was a fun course, nothing too spectacular about the course, but then again you're playing golf in Hawaii where the fairways tend to be sparse and the greens fast.
The staff was extremely friendly, with lots of local aloha, which helped make the experience even better.
For the price I paid, I'd certainly play it again--but not on the last Sunday of the month when the large golf club is playing.
