Southern Pines Golf Club
Played On 12/09/2021Still getting it ready but great layout and challenge
I had not played it before the renovations, but really liked the course now. They're still working on it, some areas betqeen holes were muddy but course itself was pristine.
And wow, challenging course that was really fun to play. Good elevation changes on some holes, false fronts as expected.
Tobacco Road Golf Club
Played On 12/08/2021Fun course everyone should play at least once
Read lots about this course so just had to check it out. I played it twice in one day; it rained early and a little cold for NC I guess, so not many golfers out there.
It's a fun course but I wouldn't call it a fair test of golf. Extreme elevation changes all over mean that a good shot can end up way out of position or a poor shot can end up just fine. You miss just left, might end up with an 80' putt over a huge mound, or miss far enough right and a hill might funnel your ball to 10'.
Back has several blind shots but I scored better on the back both rounds. And bring your sand wedge because it's everywhere!!
Walden Ponds Golf Club
Played On 10/22/2020Fun course in great condition, fast greens are a good test
Second time playing this course. Had a great ime, the course itself was in fantastic condition from tee to green. The foursome in front us was a bit slow but we finished around 4.5 hours so not terrible.
It's a relatively simple layout, wide fairways and generous sized greens. The greens are quicker than most public courses in Cincinnati in my experience, which is where the challenge lies. Good number of bunkers that will keep you honest on approach shots.
The par 5 over the water is interesting (150y cary & then layup short of a creek on 2nd shot), and there's a short par 4 that doglegs a bit. #18 is cool, dogleg right with water down the right. Fun course that's not overly difficult or penal as long as you're not spraying the ball all over the place.
Stonelick Hills Golf Course
Played On 09/25/2020Fun layout in really good condition
Weather was perfect, low 60s into mid-70s with no wind. It has not rained for 2-3 weeks so fairways and rough are running out on every course I've played.
Played blue tees (6,500y) which are not very long in these dry conditions.
The layout is fun and interesting. I like courses where strategy off the tee is an option, not just grabbing driver and bombing it. This course has several holes with water and/or doglegs, where hitting it 220 is much safer than 275. Again, with it being dry I git 5i off 4-5 par 4s and had < 150y into those greens. The one hole (#6 maybe) where I did hit driver b/f I realized my options, I ended up going through the fairway and had to punch my approach shot.
The course seems walkable (I did not walk it) but not optimized for walking. i.e. It's not very hilly but you're looking at several longish walks from green to next tee.
Greens are on the fast side but not unfair. What I found challenging was so many spots where it looked there was subtle break in the green but putts wouldn't move. Maybe it was the pin positions but next time I play I'm assuming it's a straight putt unless the break is very obvious.
Lakeside/Meadows at Shaker Run Golf Club
Played On 07/07/2019Fantastic layout, course wasn't too packed on a Sunday morning
I played this course 4 years ago, kicking myself for not playing it since then. Really a fantastic layout on both 9s, hitting over water several times on Lakeside and Meadows is a fun and fairly open layout. You've got some short holes, a couple doglegs, par 3s over water, tiered greens, just a fun 18 holes without being crazy difficult..
Lakeside is in great condition. All of the bunkers on the Meadows 9 are dirt/clover, but the course itself is in decent enough condition. Really weird on the bunkers b/c all of the bunkers on Lakeside were in really great condition, hopefully they're renovating them or if not turn them into grass bunkers.
Bonneville Golf Course
Played On 06/17/2019Pretty straight forward, if challenging, course
Walked 18, slow start with a slow 4-some in front but eventually passed them and played the entire round in about 3.5 hrs. Playing against a 2-3 club wind and greens were like concrete, plus adjusting for altitude, it was a tough round. Long on most greens is death, with steep runoffs if you go over.
1 dogleg and a couple blind shots, but otherwise it's a very straight course. Walking was fine but there are several holes where you're walking quite a bit green to tee and not well marked in spots as to which direction to go.
Marriott's Griffin Gate Golf Club
Played On 08/03/2017Really fun course, in great shape
Really fun course, with some interesting holes but not overly challenging. We were the only ones on the course for the front 9 just about, and back 9 pace was great. Greens were maybe a bit slow but not bad, I was certainly expecting them to be fast.
Just about every course is in great condition this year, with the regular rain we've had. This one was no different. I really enjoyed this course, will be back.
Only bummer is they don't have a driving range, which is pretty lame,
South/West at Glenview Golf Course
Played On 07/30/2017Really fun course, pretty fair test for average golfer
First time playing this course, we did West/East and a really nice course. Pretty fair course, not crazy challenging but you have to keep it in the fairway on most holes. The biggest challenge we had was green speeds seemed to vary from hole to hole. It was hard to get a consistent speed on putts. We got around in 4.5 hours which is pretty normal for a weekend round, weren't waiting and consistently about a half hole behind the group in front of us.
Club house looks brand new, several practice greens and a driving range although it points right into the sun in the early morning.
Hills Heart of the Lakes Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2017Course is immaculate, fun place to play
The folks maintaining the course get an A+, course was in excellent shape tee to green. I was really impressed, a great value for the money.
Course is pretty short, with a few challenging holes. The greens are what get you, not very many straight putts here and several (most?) greens slope fairly aggressively in one direction. Putting/chipping from above the pin can be harrowing.
My only complaint is lack of yardage markers, something at 100 and 150 yds would be nice.
Sharon Woods Golf Course
Played On 05/20/2017Nice course, with lots of elevation changes
Great course because it's not overly challenging but still presents several holes where you have to think. There are a couple doglegs with sloping fairways, you have to plan your tee shot. There are some up-hill and blind shots that make other holes interesting. There are a couple par 4s where driver is riskier than maybe a long hybrid. And then there are a few pretty straight-forward holes where you can just hit a shot without any analysis.
There were a couple greens that were splotchy in parts, but otherwise the course is always in great condition.
Indian Ridge Golf Club
Played On 05/29/2015Fun course, lots of work being done to make it better
I played 18 as a single in just under 3 hours, and that included playing through 3 groups. Playing from the White tees, it's a short and fun course. Or you can play it longer from the tips.
As other recent reviews have said, it's run down in some areas but they're working to make it better. The bunkers that have been repaired look great (better than any other Cincy courses, outside of the county parks), and most of the greens have issues with crabgrass around the perimeter but still playable while they make repairs.
Someone said the new owners switched 15/18, and I don't think apps like GolfShot have caught up with that change yet.
I will definitely be back this year, and expect that it'll be in pristine condition by the start of next season.
Lakeside/Meadows at Shaker Run Golf Club
Played On 05/23/2015Decent Course
This is a tough course, every par 3 requires you to carry water. There are lots of bunkers and a few holes where you can't see the pin when you tee off. There are a couple 400+ yd par 4s, which is a long way for the average weekend golfer (Tee it Forward people!).
As for the condition, I was expecting a disaster based on other reviews, but this was a pretty typical Cincinnati course in my experience. We paid $35 for 18, that would have been fair if they hadn't been aerating the greens.
- Bunkers have no sand in them, just ground up dirt or mud.
- Parking lot looks horrible, just old and someone needs to run a weedwacker around the place.
- Cart paths were in good condition.
- Tee boxes and fairways were in good condition.
- They were aerating the greens, which is never fun, but they looked fine other than that.
- Woodlands setting is beautiful, back in the woods.
- Meadows is mostly a blend of houses and overgrown fields, not as fun.
Overall it was a fine course, I expect we'll play it again this year.
Beckett Ridge Country Club
Played On 09/17/2014Course was in good condition, be careful on cart paths
Course was in good condition, a few greens were a bit marked up but otherwise tee to green it was nice. Sand traps were very well maintained!
Now, the cart paths are a different matter. If I were them I'd be starting to worry about liability issues and potential cart damage, they're in that bad a shape in a lot of places. Giant potholes all over the place, portions are completely disintegrated into loose gravel. If you're not paying attention you can get to bouncing really bad, real quick and either tear up a cart or lose control and (in a few spots) end up down a hill.
Beckett Ridge Country Club
Played On 08/08/2014Tough Course in Pretty Good Condition
Very tough course if you're not fairly straight off the tee. Trees are very thick so if you're not straight off the tee on most holes it's very hard to shoot bogey or better on the par 4s and par 5s. Long par 3s, more par 5s than a typical course, a lot of hills and the greens are fast with a lot of slope.
I thought the course itself was in good condition, there's a couple tee boxes that were a littlye rough but fairways and greens were solid. The cart paths though were not good, potholes and torn up pavement everywhere.
Miami Whitewater Forest Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2014Awesome course but beware daytime leagues
Course was in pristine condition and really an enjoyable course to walk. Fairways are pretty open, trees though are thick if you get caught in them. There's not much water but decent amount of fairways bunkers so be careful of those!
My only complaint, and I don't play during the day so maybe this is standard at every course, but... I played the front in about 90 minutes, then got stuck behind a ladies league on the back and it was 20 minutes per hole!
Deer Run Country Club
Played On 07/19/2014Great course at a decent price!
We played early in the morning (7a) and didn't have any hold ups and weren't holding anyone up. Course was in good condition, it had rained most of the night before though so things were very wet in places but that's to be expected.
Fairways can be a bit tight on some holes and there are a few blind shots over hills which keep things interesting. Trees are pretty prevalent as well, not much water though. I don't remember any water hazards unless you hit a truly horrendous shot (50 yds short on a 110 yd par 3, for example).
Moose Landing Country Club
Played On 06/21/2014Great course, fairly easy
Played as a two-some after lunch and the place was pretty empty. There was a large outing just wrapping up but we flew through the 18 in just over 3 hours.
Saw the cart girl on #1, but then never again throughout the round which would have been annoying had play been slower.
Course is very flat, not a ton of trees and they're relatively easy to hit through if you do get off the fairway. The 18th green is protected by water and there's a stream that goes through 2 other holes but don't recall any other water.
Hello thanks so much for taking the time to review our course Shaker Run! We hope to see you again this seasons and thank you for the feedback about the bunkers and parking lot we have informed our staff and are working towards the best conditions possible. We look forward to seeing you next time!
