Hudson Mills for the W.

What a GREAT course. Simple as that.
I was camping at Pinckney State Park so of course GolfNow hooks me up with a few local courses.

For $26 I would play this course every day. Best Value of the Summer thus far.

Clubhouse: The first thing you see when you pull up is the BIG beautiful glass windows of the MASSIVE high ceiling clubhouse. In the clubhouse, half is the pro shop and half is a full-blown cafeteria. Many options from chicken sandwiches to a variety of drinks (full bar.) It was one of the nicest clubhouses I've been in this summer!

The Course: From the pristine tee boxes, fast-difficult but very exciting greens to the back-to-back deep, dog legged, par 5s on the back nine. The course was in GREAT shape. You definitely notice right away that it is very well taken care of. I have been having bad luck with some recent courses with the tee boxes torn to bits... so Hudson Mills was a breath of fresh air.

Holes 13 & 14 are back-to-back par 5s. Quite challenging with dog-legging around a line of trees both over +450 yards from the whites. I miss-hit a few shots and lost one in the woods. (TRIPLED #14) But GOREGOUS holes, quint essential Pure Michigan holes.

All and all, I would recommend to ANYONE.
I noticed a TON of walkers so if you like walking, seems like this is a great course for you as well!

The Marshall Reconstruction

Right when you pull in you immediately find out its under new management from the enormous signage out front. In my eyes, that can be either good or bad...

I arrived fairly early so I could check out the grounds since it was my first time at Alywn Downs GC.
The golf course is neighboring to a small airstrip which was pretty unique. The sound of the planes didn't distract at all. You can see the airstrip on hole I want to say 6? maybe 7? We didn't get to see a plane land or take off but you get the jist.

The clubhouse - The clubhouse is being renovated. They have a full bar and the guy there was very knowledgeable about the history and reconstruction of the course. He told me that half of the course is being turned into real estate (subdivisions) so they are cutting the course down to 9 holes. I joked that it BETTER turn into a CHAMPIONSHIP 9 hole course with the money they'll make from the real estate.

The course - NOT great shape. I can't beat around the bush, the course was in pretty bad conditions. The rough was THICK, the roots and trees were extremely over grown, many dry patches on the greens and the holes were miserably cut.

Another unique thing on the course was that on one of the holes, it lines up directly with a cemetery. A huge cemetery to boot, so if you're slice is wild...you might be searching for your ball with the lost souls of Marshall.

All and All... it was worth the trip for $16, go check it out before they turn into a 9 hole course!

Hilltoppin' in Howell

What a cool layout of a course for the value! The rolling hills of the Chemung GC were the highlight of it all. Great views of the surrounding area including a cool view of a nearby NoWakeLake.

They start you at the tippy top of the hill at #1 and #10. So you pretty much start at the top, play down and turn back on the top. Very cool idea.

The downfall: HOLY MOLY IT WAS HARD AS A ROCK! If you hit the fairway it would add an extra 15-20 yards, if you miss the fairway...you're looking for it in the woods or long cut. Also, you better be flush with your wedges because I had 4 shots bounce of the greens. So hard.

All and all, super cool layout...Such an amazingly nice and knowledgeable Ranger at top and for the value... I defffff recommend it just to check out the views and layout if anything!

Jackson's Granddaddy

Cascades GC is cool. One of the older ones around. They have a short course and a driving range away from the clubhouse.

The course opens you up with two 500+ par 5s. (Both pretty straight, one declines and one inclines.) The par 3s are simple but the longer par 4s is where they'll get you. The traps were clean and crisp and the greens were in a good shape.

The guys are the clubhouse are always helpful. The only beef I have is paying $32.00 on a Monday morning when the course in empty. Drop it to around $26/$27 and you'd see me more often!

Good course though!

Hidden Little Gem

Last Tuesday, I was looking for a short road trip course where I could explore a new area and shoot 18. I fell upon Deme Acres in little town of Petersburg, MI.

Man, did I get lucky. Deme Acres was on GolfNow for like $20? Perfect VALUE! It was only a short but scenic drive from Jackson, MI . The course short but was smooth with some tricky short par 4's. The water that sit near the greens on the short par 4s make you think. Also, some pretty tough par 3s out there too.

The GPS on the cart was phenomenal (read distances, kept score and ordered food on the turn all from touch screen) and the greens weren't too fast for a dry day.

All and all, if you're looking to get out of the traffic of city life and play a pristine short course near to the Ohio border. Deme Acres is the course for you. GO CHECK IT OUT.

BEST VALUE COURSE AROUND JACKSON, MI

I live in Jackson but love to explore the surrounding courses on the outskirts of Jackson County. That particular day I found Devils Lake GC on GolfNow for something like $25 (18 holes). The drive through the rolling Irish Hills was pretty awesome approaching the course! Also, the course is surrounded by gazillllion small lakes which you can see from the drive up and clubhouse.

It was a Tuesday/Wednesday morning so it was quiet for it still was May. The course wasn't the most difficult but did have some trick longer par 4s. The greens were in great shape for May and the girls in the clubhouse were very nice.

If you're in Jackson and need something outside of the city, GO CHECK OUT DEVILS LAKE GC it's only like a 35 minute drive south,

If you're looking for a sweet little short track, Check out Dearborn Hills

So, it was a random Tuesday and I was heading over to Detroit to check out the Zoo and the Tigers game. I had about 5 hours in-between the two, so I thought i'd check out GolfNow for some local short course near Detroit.

I was lucky. I found Dearborn Hills, which was practically in between the Zoo and Comerica. The course is municipal which i'm always down for. The ranger explained to me that it was a flood zone so homes weren't allowed to build in the area. What a great idea to put a golf course there...the funny part was that it rained alllll morning long (I tee'd off in the rain) but the course did not seem drenched ONE BIT. They must have a good drainage system going on there.

The course was short but in great shape. They have some pretty amazing houses being built around the course and you wouldn't expect the amount of wildlife I saw, it seemed like I was more near the country than Detroit.

So if you're in the Detroit/Suburbs area and need a quick sweet track, DEARBORN HILLS was totally worth it. Found it on GolfNow for like $29 for 18 but I used a $10 discount so it was only $19!!!

and the Tigers won! 1-0

I don't see what the fuss is...

Arbor Hills has always had that country club, swanky vibe to me. I don't see what people see in this course that makes them want to play it multiple times a month.

The course layout is normal as it comes and the views of Arbor "Hills" are they are obsolete. I play this course maybe 3 times a year and it seems like every time I show up the prices are raised as if they were a Calderone (which they don't compete with at all).

When I show up as a single (always way before my tee time) the guys always give me the feeling like I'm wasting their time. This is every time. The only time I'll go back is with a friend or a group now.

It's a nice course, not a great course.

Haha umm... great views of the Gulf of Mexico! haha...

So i'm from Michigan and I come down to Mississippi once a year. I usually play Gulfport, Biloxi, NoLa kind of courses.

So when I found the GREAT SOUTHERN GOLF COURSE...you had me at "Great Southern" and it was on the Gulf of Mexico...whattttt!!! and it was only $30?1?!

Man...I thought I had the deal of the century... Until we arrived. So the clubhouse could be haunted...the grass seemed like it could break in half if you walked fast on them... while putting, a freight train cruised by for about three minutes, hahaha!

I mean, for the view...location...value... it was splendid but DO NOT THINK this is THE Great Southern GC because it's not. It's THE alright Southern GC. hahah Go play it !
