Course was originally designed by Bert Way and opened in 1928. Greens are pushed up and kn the smaller side. Terrain is typical flat Florida. However, I enjoyed the layout and the old school greens.

Views of the old hotel and very unique and worth the trip.

If this course fixes their greens, it would be a top 10 public course in Alabama. Front 9 greens are in poor condition - had problem with water being contaminated “last year. Back 9 is much better.

The layout is one of the best I have played from a scenic factor and how well the very hilly terrain is used. Greens have wild undulation that has to been seen in person.

Must play after they fix their greens later this year.

Course has a very scenic layout that plays over mountainous terrain. However the greens and fairways and in need of serious watering.

Seek out only if you can handle below average conditions with a great scenic layout.

The layout of the course is very good and was done in a manner to take full advantage of the hilly terrain and rock outcroppings. This should have been the focus of this review; however, the deplorable course conditions with the tee boxes and fairways overshadowed the layout.

The tee boxes were mostly muds / no grass on about one third to half of them for the
Back two tee boxes. The fairways were so wet and muddy / pressed down in spots that they were borderline unplayable. The course / area did receive a lot of rain recently. But this does not explain the lack of grass on the tee boxes or poor condition of the fairways in spots. Additionally this was not mentioned to me when I booked nor when I arrived on the course! When I went to voice my displeasure after the round they said there was nothing they could do, they had a full tee sheet for the day (about five cars in the parking lot when I left) and they can’t control the weather. My response was you can control what you charge! Still said there was nothing you can do.

Golfer be aware that the course is far from peak condition, but still charges peak rates.

Hilly 9Hole course with some off the wildest greens I have seen. The 2nd green is a tree tiered green and the 9th green is elevated and set up as a double green.

Fun course and worth a play for people that like old school golf with plenty of quirk.

The first 5 Holes play over the flatter terrain around the range. From hole 6 through 18, the holes play over some of the wildest terrain. The 7th hole hole has to be seen in person. The 12th hole has a natural waterfall.

The course has built up greens to the point where you best be on your short game. Course is a must play and one can see why it was on the best in Alabama list.

Site is quite hilly and Tilly used it quite well creating wonderful golf holes as best he could on such a hilly site. The greens are elevated and undulating and many of the tee shots are quite up hill or downhill.

I had wanted to play the course for many years and was glad I was finally able.

Years old, has a superb layout over hilly terrain, great old school greens, and a gold price.

Enjoyed this mountain course that we played at the end of a golf trip. Course had rolling terrain, solid greens and nice views of surrounding Pilot Mountain.

One of the best experiences of the year. So glad, I gave this 9 hole course a play. From the moment I walked through the door till the moment I left I was treated beyond well. The gentleman in the pro shop took the time to talk to me (first one out and had a 30 minute frost delay).

I needed rental clubs and he allowed me to use one of the new demo drivers for my round and charged me a great rate. He gave me a great rate for the round and took the time to talk about the history of the course and courses in the area.

Finally to the course, the area has received lots of recent rains and it does not show on this course. The layout and greens are top notch, modern, and use the man-made rolling terrain well. The views of all of the buildings, bridges, and across the river sky lines are not to be missed. Every hole could be a signature hole on most other public courses.

If you have not played here, don't walk, but run to play.

The non-resident fees are high; however, I knew that going into the round. I was traveling from out of town and needed rental clubs the fees quoted on the phone were not what I was charged at the facility. Oh well, so far I can handle all of this. The four different irons, two different shafts and two different woods barely from this century were most assuredly a problem for what I was charged.

Course conditions were not the best, tee boxes were in poor shape on some holes, bare spots around greens, too many ball marks that were not addressed, and poor drainage on several holes. Would not be a problem if I had not paid as much as I did.

Finally, as a first time player I made the mistake of going from the new 12th green to one of the tee boxes on the learning course - the one where they destroyed several original Charles Banks holes to create. I caught my mistake; however, this did not stop the gentleman that runs the learning facility from coming out to rip me a new one and give me a hard time. This one really really bothered me as there was no ill intent and at this point in the slow round, I just wanted to finish.

There are much much better public courses to play in the area at better rates and much much better customer service.

Lucky enough to play this Kelly Blake Moran course. Course plays over mostly flat terrain; however, the modern undulating greens and strategic use of bunkering make up for it. Greens were elevated, very undulating, and well bunkered. Conditions were what you would expect for a country club.

If given the chance to play do not pass up.

I sought out this course as it was designed by Walter Travis and was not disappointed for the remaining Travis holes were worth the play.

Loved the remaining Travis greens. Several of the holes on back 9 have some good elevation changes which led to some unique / fun holes.

If you like old school courses, play Lakewood.

One of my favorite courses in the Garden State. Interesting concept of creating holes with each hole being built in a historic golf architects style.

Course is not a Ross course but a Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek course. Course has to have some of the wildest untouched 1920s greens out there.

We walked this course which ended up being rough as the course is quite hilly. Conditions were iffy, but greens and layout make up for it.

Very good 9 hole muni. Greens are older built up with plenty of undulation. Layout plays over gently rolling terrain. I didn’t mind this shorter course as it has plenty of old school charm.

Course closed as it was sold and will no longer be a golf course.
