good but not great

Its a bucket course only for the Phoenix open and 16,17 and 18. The reality is that its not really a special course, nor a very beautiful or difficult one. Its famous and so they charge ridiculous fees to the many folks who want to tick this one off their list.

This is a great course to walk. Dont ride. Its flat and easier to walk than ride. You'll be stuck on the cart path on more holes than not and the restrictions that they have on the carts will drive you mad as the carts will just stop and beep at you with no control or direction.

The greens while true, were not in very good condition especially compared to the other top courses in the area. Many dead spots, many pocks and pits and a ton of old holes in your line. While the most expensive course in the valley, Its not nearly as well conditioned as the others and rates a 6/10 on conditioning. You are paying for the privilege to play 16 17 and 18.

Almost every bunker was filled with divots, foot tracks and worse. For a $200 course, they dont care for it very well.

The range was in terrible shape. We played at noon and the one yard wide hitting zone had NO smooth grass. It was all divots and sand. I had to ask for balls... Ridiculous for a course of this caliber and price.

I'd recommend playing it but its not nearly as good as a half a dozen options nearby.

Bizzare layout and routing

A strange course indeed. From the many (and I mean many) blind shots and odd carries, to the oddest routing of any course I've ever played (you have to drive a mile back up a few holes to get home). To the lack of any practice facility (a small putting green and a net) this is a very odd and gimicky golf course. Now if you're a high handicapper and or just in town for the resort, play it and enjoy it but if you can hit the ball 260+ off the tee, like to walk, stay away as this course will make you shake your head and wonder -what were they thinking?

Greens are small and undulated and were not in very good conditions but that's OK with a $69 course in season. I just couldnt enjoy the round as we were waiting on every hole and to make matters worse, the layout is just awful. A perfect drive down the middle disappears while a topped tee shot runs all the way to the green. There are 4 or 5 holes that seem like they were designed by a non-golfer who only played Golden Tee, very odd. On the plus side the staff was really nice and the drink cart was around often. I wont be back.

Target golf

I prefer the Saguaro course over the Cholla. The Cholla is a bit too gimmicky with all sorts of target shots and hidden views. There are several holes that are just bad designs. Where you are penalized for great tee shots. If this is your type of golf, then you'll love the Cholla course but if you like to actually see where you're going, have a decent chance for risk/reward and like to play at a decent pace, the Cholla is not the course for you... I think the biggest problem with WeKoPa is the number of mediocre and / or beginners who play out there. They are both very difficult golf courses but they seem to attract a lot of tourists and beginners who really should not be playing a course of this caliber. And the result is 5 hours rounds and a whole lot of waiting... On the plus side, its fairly open in the summer as the tourists are elsewhere.

Bottome line: Nice course, great conditions, bueautiful views and a real challenge but not for the begniner or the short hitter.

If you are penalized for a great tee shot it isn't a great tee shot. I agree Cholla is more of a target golf course than Saguaro. My advice for the first timer is pay attention to the course layout card provided at the beginning of the round and be aware that driver may not be the best choice for every tee shot. There is a learning curve to this course and I enjoy it more the more I play it. I I have played both Wekopa courses 10-15 times/yr for the past 4 years and have only had one +5 hr round - in May, 2016. Generally in the 4:15 to 4:30 hr range and faster in off peak season.

Tough but fun

I prefer tougher courses that are walk-able. And this one fits the bill perfectly. The greens are fast and undulated and perhaps most challenging, convex. You better bring your A game if you want to play well out here as your approach shots are everything. Miss your target landing zone by a few feet and you're staring a at bogie. Off the tee the course is fair and long enough for even the biggest hitters, the conditions were great as the greens were flawless. Bunkers were in good condition but many were left un tended (where do people play that they dont have to rake their bunkers? Apparently here!). The 15, 16 and 17th are new due to a re-routing and they are not nearly of the caliber of the other 14 holes. Maybe that will change with some time but I felt that they ruined the round as they played differently and were visually less appealing than the other 15 holes. Overall I liked it better than the Talon (except for 15, 16 and 17) and will definitily be back. Expensive but a great course and a fun facility and in my opinion not nearly as nice as Troon in both conditions and layout.

If it was anywhere else

If it was anywhere else, It'd be a 2.5 star course. The conditions are no where near the price. Fairways are spotty, muddy and inconsistent. The rough is a mix of nothing, dirt and various grasses. The greens, while fast are spotted Poa and Bent and who knows what else - making the direction of your ball purely at the whim of the golf gods or the maintenance crew.

It is truly sad to see such a gem fall into such shape. Seems our of character to Ty Warner to have such a poorly run course in such a beautiful and unique location. If you can play for <$60 do it, otherwise lower your expectations and enjoy the views. Regardless of your golf game, the views are gorgeous.

None better

Troon is and will always be the gold standard. Their course conditions are by far the best of any public course. And this holds true for every course they manage which I have been fortunate to play. The staff, the pro-shop, the practice facility, the bev carts, are all the best in the industry and this being their flagship course sets the bar high for all others.

I've played this course many times and I never grow tired of the course. Its a great challenge but not too punitive. Its gorgeous and plays swift. There is a reason that Troon North always appears at the top of the lists of best of, its because it truly is the best. Granted the greens are a bit of a mess with all the poa mixed in, but they're still miles ahead of most and from what I hear they're planning on redoing them soon to thwart any more poa.

Play here and you will see why its the gold standard. If only other courses and managment companies were half as good! I just wish I could play here weekly.

Great course, great facilty

I hadnt played out here in many years and was a little concerned that it would be a classic muni but boy was I wrong, this is a really great facility.

Loved the Lakes course. Its challenging yet fair and will absorb even the most errant shots. The layout is fun and the greens are large and in great condition. The course is both visually attractive and fun to play and in surprisingly great condition considering the drought and the conditions of other local courses. I will most definitkly be back as the course takes a little local knowledge to play well. There are a number of blind shots and visual mis cues that can send you into a lake, the rough or bye bye altogether. Overall its a really nice course for all levels and is both reasonable in price and fantastic in play. Great job Oxnard!

One of the best golf experiences around

We're in a severe drought and RSM gets hit the hardest as they pull their water from wells which are pretty much dry.... So until the rains return the course is at the mercy of the weather. They do keep the greens in perfect condition though and with little play, you probably wont find better greens anywhere.

Upside: Its gorgeous. One of the prettiest courses in the state. There are NO HOUSES. Just views for miles and miles and lots of oak trees and wildlife.

The layout is pretty good except for the finish. There are three par 3's in three holes here for some unknown or stupid reason. Back to back ones and then another one just a hole later - what the heck were they thinking on that? There is plenty of room but for some reason they made it a par 71 with 3 par 3's in 3 holes...

Play it if you can but if you're playing past now (may) you will have brown fairways until the rains return. The good side is that its like your own private course, the bad side is you're going to have hard pan lies.

Puny Muni

Its a fun and decent little muni course. Greens are usually in great shape and it usually plays along pretty quickly. The biggest downside to the course is the driving range. Has to be the worst range I've ever seen or played. Its really that bad. So if you go, plan on not hitting balls or getting a good warm up as the mats, the stalls and the balls are not even worth your time. In fact, they’ll ruin your game they’re so bad!

There are a few funny holes but for the most part the course plays pretty fair. The Kikuyu can be a bit of a challenge to those who are not used to it as its a grabby and sticky turf that sucks the life out of many shots. You're not going to be running to many shots up onto the greens here, so carry the ball all the way to the hole!

I hear they're changing over management so hopefully the new team will improve the range and offer some much needed love to the course. It has the potential of being one of the best muni's in the state but its got a long, long way to go. If the management is reading this please replace the range. If you want to get kids into the game and more play, start there as people need and want a place to hit balls but its current state drives them and their money away.

What were they thinking?

I've played hundreds of courses all over the world. From the tiniest executive to the most famous of them all and I have to say that Glen Annie is one confused and poor design and among the worst 18 holes I've played anywhere. Now it can be fun if you go out with 6 hours to spare and a whole lot of patience but the course is really a bad design. I read somewhere else that it’s like they only had room for 15 holes and they packed in an extra 3. The course seems like it was designed by committee or someone who isnt a golfer.

There are 5 or 6 holes that are just terrible. From the 1st on you experience a mix of boring and or ridiculous. Like the 3rd, a 320 yrd downhill par 4. Or the 5th, or the 7th... The 10th? By far the worst turn in all of CA and then you hit the 12th another drivable downhill par 4, that backs up 4 groups deep as everyone thinks they can hit it 290 to the green...

I wish this place was just 9 holes and a great practice facility or some little par 3 course. As it stands its 9 decent holes and 9 horrible ones and the worst driving range around, second only to SB Muni is its absurdly bad design.

Bottom line is that Glen Annie is there for the times when you just need to golf but for the most part I'd skip it and just head to the Frog Bar. You'll have a better time and wont feel as if you just paid $50+ for 9holes of decent golf and 9 of the worst you’ll ever experience.

Needs improvement to be worthy of its past and its place

Been playing Sandpiper for many years and have mixed feelings about this course. It’s in a great location and has a few incredible holes which are worthy of its accolades but the rest of the course is rather mediocre. The fact is that conditions are never up to the standards of a great daily fee and are actually closer to that of a muni. Not sure if the current management is just not interested in bettering the course but it sure seems to be doing its best to run this dog into the ground.

There have been many changes made in the last 5 years but none of them have had any positive impact on the course. In fact the course was in pretty awesome shape and conditions but has dramatically slipped in the last 5 or so years. Whether it’s the practice facilities which keep getting smaller and smaller and less fun, or the cutting down of trees and shrubs which used to offer both a scenic boost and a playability test, or the introduction of badly positioned tee boxes, or the removal of bunkers and the tall grasses that used to line them, it seems that they're either not interested in improving what could be a truly spectacular course. Its rather sad since this layout has the potential to be one of the very best courses in So Cal as they’ll never be another coastal course built in this state. Many of us locals feel that with the right attention and the right team, Sandpiper could shine but in its current form it’s a very overrated and hugely overpriced course that is more like a muni except with all the stuffiness and arrogance you typically find at a private club.

It would be great if they did some actual improvements to the course as it’s still a hodgepodge of various turf and very mixed conditions. I guess the upside is that due to its price and conditions it’s never very crowded and so you can easily get on any weekend and play a pretty decent pace.

Very nice club

Course is tough enough to challenge the best players while fair enough to keep the high handicappers in play. The greens are very, very slick and will take a few holes to get used to... expect a few 3 putts out there.

Its Kikuyu and so it takes a little different type of play. You have to carry the ball to the green and you'll find your short game a little hampered if you're not used to the stickiness of the Kikuyu grass. But if you play Riviera or MCC, you'll do just fine.

Overall a very nice private club. The course is always well maintained but the drought is taking its toll. Play it if you can and enjoy this very classic country club.

Downside: iron only driving range
