Fun for something different

Short course that is fairly tight, interesting holes and useful to have some local knowledge on distances and lines off the tee. Several adjacent holes so pay attention to other golfers. Course is in good condition but not great, staff was friendly, nice atmosphere to enjoy a post round drink on the patio. Good pace of play, finished in about 3.5 hours.

Surprisingly strange layout, but still worth playing

Played this course with my dad and another solo golfer. We ended up playing 3 of the tees: Solo guy played the tips and was clearly a scratch golfer, I played the blues (5-6 handicap) and my dad played the greens (senior golfer, 15-17 handicap). From the back 2 tee boxes there are several blind (or mostly obscured) tee shots. Not a problem if you trust your driver or have a trusty 3 wood for distance control. 3 long par 3's on the front. Pay attention to the course map to figure out where hazards are, and distances to bunkers. Many bunkers are in the middle of the fairway, at typical driver distance (starting with #1). Greens are soft and hold well but have mixed speeds from hole to hole so it's hard to get a feel for pace.
Friendly staff and easy check in process.
Nice range to warm up on. Did not see a practice green but there may be one there.
GPS on carts in helpful.
Somewhat inconsistent sand in bunkers, be sure to test it with your feet as you take a stance, many were fairly packed and a little wet, so not much hope of sliding under the ball.
Got a good price through GolfNow at ~$65, and was happy with it at that price.
Very nice grass on tee boxes and fairways.
It's clear they are taking COVID protocols seriously: check-in window so going inside is optional, some sort of ball retrieval mechanism on each flagstick; restroom doors permanently open with new partitians, thorough spray down and rinse of carts after each round is finished. Free bottles of water and ice for cooler included with the round.

Great course, worth the drive

The course is in great shape right now. The bent grass greens are excellent, definitely among the best in Central Texas. Fairly forgiving layout with several great risk/reward par 5's and a couple of short par 4's. Nestled in the hill country with a few holes with views out over Lake Travis. Probably will get more play now that ACC did not continue their lease agreement, which is good news for public golfers. If you see a hot deal for this course jump on it, you won't regret it! Give yourself enough time to get out there so you aren't rushed to start.

Pleasant course off the beaten path

Mill Creek is steadily making a comeback after all the floods of the last few years. They previously had 27 holes. Currently they have 18 open which consist of the former back 9 + the new 9. Expect to find a few trees and bunkers off the tee boxes, some of the holes are a little tight and other open up and are forgiving. Pay attention creek crossings and lakes as some of the distances are hard to gauge due to undulating fairways and elevated tees or greens. For the most part the greens are in good shape, though there are a few on the back nine that are a bit quick due to thin grass. Most greens are also painted so it can be tough to tell where there is grass so it's worth walking your line to make sure you know what you're putting on. Playing the whites allows you to hit some shorter clubs and minimizes the carries for clearing hazards; playing the blues introduces some challenging shots for the low handicap players. GPS is helpful, take it or use an app if you have one. The 2 trees in the #18 fairway are growing and are a bit awkward, and don't get above the pin on #18 green it has a steep grade from back right to front left! Enjoy the hill country scenery and quiet setting and don't get in a hurry!

Quality fall golf at Forest Creek

Played Sunday afternoon as a 4-some. Started at 1:15 so we could finish before dark with the recent time change. Fairways and tee boxes in great shape for the most part. Greens were cut low and although there are coloration differences they are rolling smoothly and pretty consistent on speed. Make sure you don't get above the hole because the downhill putts are pretty quick. We played in 4 hrs 10 minutes, which on a Sunday afternoon is pretty good. You may only hit driver 4 or 5 times out here, it is a shot makers course and pay attention to the distances you need off the tees. Always a challenging layout and take plenty of golf balls because there are lots of trees and creeks that are in play!

The club house has your essential golf gear and the 19th hole has what you need to survive; reasonably priced drinks, hot dogs, sausage wraps... but don't expect on gourmet dining!

Cool afternoon out in Sun City

1st time playing a Sun City course did not disappoint. Course was in good condition for winter, greens soft and receptive and rolling very consistent on each hole. Very large greens with undulation so really helps to play with a local. Fortunately I got paired up with a good old boy that plays 200+ rounds per year there and we had a good day. Beautiful trees on the course, several bunkers, most in good shape. Some water and you have to watch the OB on some holes due to houses. Played the blues at 6000 yards and although shorter than what I like it was still challenging and interesting. You can back it up and play gold or black to test your skills a bit more. As others have mentioned, pack a lunch and a few drinks so you don't get "hangry". If you do that you'll enjoy your day out at Legacy Hills. And ask for Lindy, he'll save you several strokes on the course with his local tips!

Avery in good shape but some is under water

Good value from Golfnow at $44 for the round, although half of #9 is under water so it has been changed into a 150 yard par 3. There is also a par 3 on the back that is completely closed. I was a bit surprised that neither the golfnow system nor the check in staff, nor the starter mentioned anything about these areas. Greens are in great shape, very soft and smooth. Fairways are a bit soggy but in good shape. This is a great course but would be worth calling ahead to see if the holes have been re-opened, especially if you are coming in from out of town, or paying more than $44. Lots of deer on the course which is interesting. Many of the bunkers had significant standing water and were unplayable.

We played this course on nov 8 and were not told of the problems on the course. The closed and shortened holes. We spent enough time in the pro shop shopping before checking in so could have been told of the problems. We were charged $85 per person.

We sent a letter to the general manager who was not sympathetic at all, in fact was very dismissive.

Though it seems like it would be a great layout, We will not return because of management's attitude toward its customers.

Spent $100 in the pro shop, lost 6 balls in bunkers that were flooded and management could care less.

Booooo Avery Ranch management - Mr Brown!

ShadowGlen Returning to form!

Enjoyed a nice morning round at ShadowGlen, first group out at 6:50. Fairways are plush and cut nicely, the rough is manageable, and although greens are somewhat hard they still manage to hold approach shots nicely. Greens are rolling smoothly and pretty consistent across the course, with one or two a bit slower than the others. Sand bunkers were a bit inconsistent; some with grass and packed sand, others in good shape. So great to see this course back open and in good shape; it's a nice alternative to playing courses in the city again, with easy access off 130 Toll Road now it's much more accessible.

Enjoyable round in January

Played here mid week on what might be the last warm day in January in Texas. Course is looking good, greens are rolling nicely. Fairways are well maintained but maybe getting a bit thin in some areas. Bunkers were a bit wet from recent rains, so pay attention to the condition of the sand before hitting your bunker shots. Great course for mid and low handicappers, can be tough on the high handicaps or if you don't carry tee shots and approach shots (several shots require a carry over water/rough/bunkers). I always enjoy the challenge of this course, and play off about a 12. My Dad (72) who plays off about a 20 finds it too difficult due to the types of shots required (bump and runs are punished frequently with bunkers!) High handicap will likely enjoy Star Ranch or Bluebonnet more. I'll be back again soon, but not with my Dad! Course can play very long with north wind and playing the tips will give you a solid challenge any day of the week. I've played this course since it opened and it is growing in nicely with trees now and greens have matured quite a bit as well.

Great course if you don't mind some wind!

Great value if you get the locals rate or a deal on GolfNow. Played the day after Christmas and the course was in great shape. Greens running smooth and fairly quick- fairways nice as well. Only comment would be some of the bunkers lack enough sand which is ironic since the course is on Galveston Island. Be careful on bunker shots as some bunkers are packed and shallow and the ball will come out hot! Could also have been due to recent rainfall... overall a great round and an enjoyable day.Drinks cart came past several times over the course of the 18 holes.

Great greens at Star Ranch

First time to play the course in about a year, and glad I made the trip back. Thru GolfNow, paid about $45/each incl green fee, cart, and range balls. For $7 more picked up food at the buffet before starting. Greens were rolling better than any I've played in Austin this winter, very smooth and consistent. Fairways are in good shape. Course isn't overly long unless you play the tips; pretty forgiving fairways on most holes. Wasn't overly fast pace for 18 holes, finished around 4 1/2 hours. Overall a fun course just outside the city and I'll be back fairly soon.

Great deal at Jimmy Clay!

Beautiful day on Jimmy Clay in SE Austin yesterday. There are a few greens they have lost but the fairways are in great condition for the winter. Great value w/ cart and good pace of play, overall an enjoyable round!
