The Omni Grove Park Inn
Played On 08/15/2015Very enjoyable experience
I had a lot of fun playing this old Donald Ross design. It's not very long, even from the back tees, but offers a lot of interesting and challenging holes. The greens were in good shape and run pretty quick with classic Ross slopes. I played as a single at a twilight rate and got the whole course in in 3 hours. I'd love to go back and play it again.
Old Trail Golf Club
Played On 05/17/2015Fun Course
I enjoyed Old Trail. It's got an interesting mix of holes. Conditioning was good throughout. The greens were in fine shape. Paid $65 for a weekend morning time with cart. Not too bad. I would go back and would recommend though I guess I slightly prefer Birdwood nearby for about the same $'s.
The Highland Course At Primland Resort
Played On 08/05/2014Simply amazing!
I played here for the first time a few days ago. All I can say is I was in awe of the place. The conditioning, the variety of the course, the unbelievable views throughout the round - I just can't say enough good things about Primland. I've played other premier resort courses in recent years like Spyglass, the Ocean Course at Kiawah, and Harbour Town, and I would certainly say this holds its own with that group. Donald Steele really deserves a great deal of praise for creating this beautiful course. Primland is hard to get to, there's no doubt about that, but it was well worth the trip in my opinion.
Olde Mill Resort
Played On 08/04/2014Neat mountain course
I played here as part of a VSGA One Day event. I did not know much about the course prior to playing but was pretty impressed. Conditioning overall was good with the greens being in excellent shape. The course has a lot of elevation changes throughout and water comes into play on many holes. The setting is beautiful. It is definitely a tough test, but it made for a really nice outing.
The Champions Club at Summerfield
Played On 06/02/2014Just OK
I gave this course a try when I was down in early summer. It was not bad. Conditions were for the most part OK, but one thing that really bothered me was that the greens were hard as rocks, and approach shots just wouldn't stick. On the other hand, the turf conditions didn't allow you to run the ball up to the greens, so I couldn't really figure out how you were supposed to attack a pin. Don't know if I would go back; there are some better options.
Palm Beach Golf Course
Played On 06/01/2014Just plain fun to play
I have played here tons of times over the years. I think it is one of the most fun golf experiences out there. Ray Floyd's renovation a few years back made a good thing great. Has a great variety of Par 3 holes that play by the ocean and by the intracoastal. I wish there were more courses like this out there.
Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort
Played On 04/02/2014Lived up to its reputation
Played here for the first time just a couple of weeks before the RBC. I felt like it lived up to its lofty reputation as a top-100 course. Being in the Low Country it is, of course, very flat. There are frequent sandy waste areas throughout in typical Pete Dye fashion. The greens were in perfect condition, medium-fast, and a little flatter than I expected. You don't see the Sound until the end of the round. I loved the famous 18th. Hit a great drive and 2nd shot but still ended up in the front bunker. Couldn't get up and down.
West Palm Beach Golf Course
Played On 01/02/2014An old classic
I have played here many times when down in the area over the last five years. I think the restoration was great. It's a really fun course to play. The slope of 122 is way too low for the back tees at 6700 yds. Whenever I play here there's a strong breeze and that always leads to a lot of time spent in the sandy waste areas. Condition is pretty typical muni conditioning. Greens are pretty good Bermuda greens. Fairways can be a little rough but are generally fine. The value here is good, and it's worth a stop.
