Played On 09/19/2020Maybe the best muni in So Cal
I always appreciate playing Alhambra golf course. It is extremely well maintained, fairways well grassed and trimmed, greens medium speed and roll true. Pace of play is awesome. We played in just a little over 4 hours. The new COVID-19 procedures of 4somes or less and 10 minute tee times has really improved round times. Unfortunately my game is not in good shape, between COVID-19 and SoCal wildfires, I don't get to play or practice as much as I would like. However, Alhambra golf course is still a treat to play.
Bella Verde Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2020Good condition, fast paced
It’s amazing what happens when you limit groups to 4 or less and send them out 10 minutes apart, instead of 8 minutes apart. You get a round that was played in about 4 hours.
Driving range is bare-bones. I don’t think they have washed a range ball since the date of purchase.
Greens were in generally good shape, although some unrepaired ball marks existed. Fairways were mostly well grassed with only a few brown spots and dirt lies. Lots of fairway bunkers makes 2nd and 3rd shots challenging. A few holes with forced carries offered bailout points to the side.
All things considered, Montebello Country Club is a fun course to play and is in relatively good condition.
San Dimas Canyon Golf Course
Played On 08/02/2020Nice course, poor hygiene
The course itself is in very good condition. Well grasses and trimmed fairways, well cared-for greens that roll true, moderately fast with a little slope.
My complaint centers around the level of hygiene. Marshals and on-course workers not wearing masks. Gatherings of unmasked golfers outside the pro shop, talking close together and enjoying a “19th hole”, like old times.
To their credit, the pro shop was adequately social distanced and the check-in process felt safe. We were assured that carts are fully wiped down before each use.
Number One at Brookside Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2020Much improved experience from last time
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought several changes about at Brookside Golf Course. In addition to the on-course restrictions (leave the flagstick, no bunker rakes, semi-plugged holes), Brookside has limited groups to no more than 4 players and spaced tee times 10 minutes apart. This has greatly improved both pace of play and enjoyment. We played in just under 4 hours, unheard of previously at Brookside which was famous for packing in 5-somes and more. The course was in pretty good shape, the greens were excellent and the fairways mostly good.
Alhambra Municipal Golf Course
Played On 02/08/2020The best is getting better
A few nice repairs and refurbishments are taking place at the best municipal golf course in Southern California. Several tee boxes are being resodded. New cart paths on some holes. Once completed, Alhambra will be even better than before.
As for the course itself, it is in fantastic condition. Fairways grassed and perfectly mown. Greens are in excellent condition and running true. I have not found a better maintained "muni" golf course in So Cal.
Thank you for your 5 star review. We appreciate your feedback and support. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Alhambra Municipal Golf Course
Played On 01/18/2020Well maintained course, lots of fun to play
Course is in excellent condition. Pace of play was good, but not exceptional, probably due to a tournament ahead of us. Alhambra is always a delightful course to play. Lots of short par 4s challenge the longer hitters to go fo the green and allow shorter hitters more greens in regulation. Greens are a good recreational speed and roll true. Fairways well grassed with few if any bare spots. I don't think I had a single bad lie from any fairway today. Staff is awesome, friendly and professional.
Thank you for the 5 star review and kind words. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again soon. Happy Golfing!
Alhambra Municipal Golf Course
Played On 12/28/2019Unusually slow this time
The course itself is in great condition, which is typical. Even with being a bit soggy from the recent rains, it still played well. Greens are in fantastic shape. The only problem was pace of play. The normally 4.5 hour round stretched to 5.5 hours and may have been due to some newer holiday golfers. Fortunately, I know this is just an anomaly, so it wasn’t that big a deal.
Thank you for your review and great insights. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again soon
Alhambra Municipal Golf Course
Played On 12/21/2019Great course, golfer not so much
Although I did not have even my B game, let alone my A game, Alhambra is still an awesome course to play. It is in top condition with well grasses fairways and medium speed greens. It’s a short course which makes it much more fun for golfers like me who are not crazy long off the tee. Staff is always professional and friendly and always make customers feel welcome.
Thank you so much for your 5 star review, kind words and support. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back soon.
Alhambra Municipal Golf Course
Played On 11/30/2019Awesome muni
Playing Alhambra is always a pleasure. The course is very well maintained, fairways well grassed and trimmed, greens roll true if a bit slow. It’s a shorter course, so it’s a good size for women and seniors. Pace of play is usually very quick. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Thank you so much for your review and kind words. We value your feedback, and hope to see you back soon.
Santa Anita Golf Course
Played On 06/07/20194 hour round, course in great shape
Very happy with the experience playing Santa Anita. We played in 4 hours almost to the minute. Greens were firm and fast and putts rolled true. Fairways were well grassed with only a few bald spots. Bunkers were fluffy allowing legitimate bunker “explosion” shots. Staff was helpful and friendly.
My only complaint is that the course now charges a $5 deposit on the cart key. They willingly refund it at the end of the round, IF you know about it. They don’t do a good job of telling you about it up front. They don’t try to hide it, but old timers like me never realized they charged me the deposit. Fortunately our playing partners alerted us so we could get our deposit back.
Black Gold Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2018Great expectations, average experience
After all the hype I’ve heard about how great Black Gold is, I expected a first-class experience. What I got was no better than an average “muni”. Driving range was mats, not grass. Fairways were sometimes brown and always uneven. Greens were average, with many examples of damage from unrepaired ball marks. Green speed was a bit on the slow side.
Many of the fairways were closed to cart traffic. This necessitated carrying multiple clubs from the cart onto the fairway, then walking, sometimes uphill, back to the cart. Not a pleasant experience. Several holes had blind tee shots, something that penalizes first-time golfers.
Pace of play was a little slow, partly due to being grouped with a long hitter who required long waits for fairways and greens to clear.
All in all, I was very disappointed in Black Gold and am not likely to return, especially at their premium prices.
Well...there are a lot of hills on the course, which might explain the uneven fairways. It does happen from time to time where a course might not allow carts on certain holes. It is a beautiful course. Sounds like a little bit of whining to me.
Eaton Canyon Golf Course
Played On 05/13/20184 holes then rained out
Despite weather reports showing zero percent chance of rain, it rained enough that we could not proceed past the 4th hole.
Eaton Canyon Golf Course
Played On 05/06/2018Eaton Canyon continues to improve
I am so pleased to say that Eaton Canyon is once again a great golf experience. Fairways are well grasses, if somewhat bumpy. The greens are in fantastic shape, running at an appropriate recreational speed. The course layout has always been one of my favorites, with spectacular views of the foothills on holes 7 and 9. It’s also somewhat of a secret, which is why we played 9 holes in well under 2 hours. If you are short on time and want to play 9 holes of regulation-length golf, I highly recommend playing Eaton Canyon.
Eaton Canyon Golf Course
Played On 02/18/2018Getting better every week
The return of Eaton Canyon continues to progress well. Fairways are looking great, with good grass on the short-grass areas. Greens are fantastic, very smooth, not a hint of disease or over/under watering. Putts roll true at a reasonable Stimp level. All in all, Eaton Canyon is a delight to play again. My only complaint is that they are a little too willing to send out large groups of 5 or 6. This may be because volume is still low. Pace of play is still excellent, with 9 holes taking just under 2 hours. If you are crunched for time, Eaton Canyon is a great way to play 9 holes of regulation length golf and only costs you 2 hours out of your day.
Santa Anita Golf Course
Played On 01/15/2018Needs a starter if they intend to use split tees
Course in very good condition. Still a few places on the fairways that need help. Over all, however, very good condition. Played the front 9 in about 2 hours. When we made the turn, we were amazed to find another group on the tee box. Seems the clerk inside had started this group on the back 9, since the front 9 was backed up. I’m told they do this all the time. Unfortunately, they do this without regard for any group making the turn. This slowed down our back 9 and to a less enjoyable experience. They really need a starter if they intend to start groups on the 10th Tee.
