Fun experience!

Really enjoyed playing here. The staff was friendly and helpful. Carts come with GPS, fairways are nice and open, with enough sand/water to make it challenging, but not intimidating. Conditions were almost perfect. I look forward to playing here again, particularly look forward to checking out the south course.

Just lovely

This was the first course I played in the desert. Conditions were perfect, clubhouse was very nice, staff was beyond helpful and friendly. I especially enjoyed holes 3-5, which play right next to he mountains. 18 is also mountainside, with a beautiful water feature at the end. Not too much water, although enough sand to keep it interesting and challenging. My only compliant was that the clubhouse closed at 6pm so we couldn’t have a drink when we finished, but I guess that’s what you get for playing on a Monday. Can’t fault them for that. Look forward to playing here again!

I’m probably biased, but it was awesome

So finally got to play this course after years of staring at it (literally everyone in my family is a member going all the way back to the 70s - my grandmother used to let me drive the golf carts down the hill between 17 and 18 when I was in kindergarten. She was a seriously cool lady). Anyway. Finally got to play for two days I’m a row this fall and wasn’t disappointed. Lives up to its reputation as one of the best courses in the Akron area. What a great course. And the outside bar overlooking the course is a killer addition. Looking forward to my next opportunity to play!

Fantastic golf and spa, but the rest of the resort needs some work.

I cannot say enough fine things about the golf course and golf facilities at Kingsmill. The courses (both the River and Plantation) were challenging, but not so challenging that I ever felt like I was in over my head. Both courses were in fantastic condition. The greens ran true and fast. The driving range was lovely. The staff was fantastic, including the pros (seriously, if you are in the market for golf instruction, consider a weekend at Kingsmill). Great pro shop as well. And a nice bar to have a burger for lunch. Also- the cart girl makes a mean Bloody Mary.

The spa was also world class. The massage therapist really knew what she was doing, and helped me out a lot with a lingering shoulder injury. Really impressed with the spa.

If I were solely rating Kingsmill on the golf and spa, it would be five stars, hands down. Unfortunately, to play there, you have to be a guest of the resort, which disappointed. Again, the facilities were beautiful, and the rooms were fine, but the food left much to be desired (I'm being generous with that statement) and for a resort that charges over $400 a night, the wine list was pathetic. Additionally, the reservation staff messed up our reservation and we were informed that we would have to move rooms halfway through our stay (seriously?). When we finally worked something out so that would not be the case, they messed up our parking passes and room keys and when I tried to explain to the front desk what had happened (all I really wanted to do was go to bed), the girl at the desk was quite rude. There really needs to be better communication between the front desk and the reservation staff. And if you are going to charge that much and market yourself as a five diamond resort, get a chef who can provide something better than Cupcake Chardonnay and slimy crab dip.

Would I go again? Absolutely. In fact, I anticipate that happening. The golf, again, is world class and makes it more than worth the disappointment I experienced with the front desk staff and food. So yes- I would hands down recommend you consider Kingsmill for a great golf vacation . . . just make a plan to go into town and eat dinner elsewhere at the end of the day.

For an urban par-3, it's worth it.

It seems like many of the reviews on this page are actually for the Blue course and not the red. The red course is a 9-hole, par-3 course. It's not in the greatest condition, but for $13 per round (a price which had not gone up in over three years), it's a total deal, especially for someone who is either beginning or working on their short game. I'm a solo golfer, generally, and I've gone out early in the morning and walked this entire course by myself in 45 minutes, which is awesome. Whenever paired with others, it's been an enjoyable experience. Keep in mind, that it caters to less-advanced golfers, so the pace may be slowed down by parties in front of you, but for the money, it's a nice little public par-3 course.

Best way to see the Cherry Blossoms

This is East Potomac's 9-hole executive course. It has an open layout with fairly straight fairways and few hazards. Can get a bit muddy at times, but it is situated in the middle of an island in the Potomac. Also note, there are frequent flyovers by various government aircraft, mostly helicopter, including Marine One, so if you like that kind of stuff, it's a fun 9 holes to play. It's also a guaranteed way to enjoy the cherry blossoms up close without the annoying crowds that descend on DC in the spring (just get there early because the tourists don't seem to understand that the parking lot is only for golfers. This is a problem only during the cherry blossom festival. The rest of the year, no problem with parking). The staff is awesome, but the course could use some more upkeep than the federal budget will allow (it's run by the NPS). Overall, a nice way to get in 9 holes with lovely views.

Nice course with lots of water

I played 18 on this course in October. The conditions were generally good, although it was windy and there were a lot of leaves on the ground (perhaps can't be helped given the time of the year). Pace of play was slower than I would have preferred, but not agonizing. The back nine has a significant number of water hazards to contend with. I actually found playing the ladies tees to be more difficult than the men's. My biggest complaints are thus: they do not have a driving range to warm up, just a net to hit into, and there was a wedding going on in the clubhouse when we finished our round which was rowdy to say the least, and we felt rushed to leave at the end. The pro shop was well stocked and they had a nice bar with basic concessions. Overall, it was an enjoyable day and would absolutely go back.

Quiet course in the middle of the city . . . Could use some updates to the facilities

If you are looking for an affordable 18 holes of golf with some challenging holes, this is a great course. The front nine is wide open with long fairways. The back nine provides a different challenge with narrow fairways bounded by the woods. It's beautiful year round, but especially in the fall when the leaves are changing (beware the fact that the leaves will be all over the greens . . . see photo). For the most part, its far quieter than the other public courses in DC, with an older demographic. The facilities could use some updates - the pro shop is rather disappointing, they don't have a full concession stand, and the bathrooms could use some work. It is, however, an awesome mid-century building, so with some TLC it could be an outstanding facility. Also- it's literally just off all of the 16th street routes, so for those without a car, or who don't want to drive inside the city, it's quite accessible by public transportation.
