Stony Ford Golf Course
Played On 07/09/2018Great Value
This is a moderately challenging and very well maintained course with some fantastic vistas of the surrounding countryside. With several long par 4’s and 5’s—some straight and wide open, others with dog-legs and elevation changes- you’ll definitely need every club in your bag. Very friendly staff and a relaxed informal atmosphere added to the enjoyment for me. I played on Monday morning so pace of play was not an issue; can’t speak to work the weekends would be like. There’s also a locker room with two showers and a very affordable little restaurant with a breakfast and lunch menu and bar. I shoot the mid-90s so the course presented enough of a challenge for me and overall I would say it’s a real gem of a county/state park-run facility.
Somers National Golf Club
Played On 05/27/2018A pleasurable challenge
Long and narrow with many elevation changes and a fair bit of water, this is a course that really tests accuracy off the tee and will never be boring no matter how often one plays it. For many of the par 4 holes a long iron or hybrid is the wise choice off the tee. The course was well maintained—despite understandably needing to catch up on some things due to the recent storms. Staff is always friendly and accommodating and there is a great clubhouse and restaurant overlooking the 18th green.
Richter Park Golf Course
Played On 11/13/2017Love the length
The course was in great condition even in November. It combines generally long open fairways which lets you air out the long irons, with nuanced terrain and hazards around the greens which makes for a good test of your short game. The staff are friendly and accommodating and there is a first class restaurant on site. Of tracks affordable and accessible to the general public this is one of the best in the north east in my opinion.
Saxon Woods Golf Course
Played On 06/05/2017County Course in Great Condition
Have played Saxon Woods many times in the past, but not for two years prior to this. Compared to the last time played, the course is in very good condition and well maintained. We were told there is a new greens keeper. At any rate, the fairways and greens were impeccable, which seemed to help underscore the inherent beauty and interest of the place. Reasonably challenging for just about any level of skill.
Putnam County Golf Course
Played On 09/20/2015Long, Narrow and Enjoyable Public Course
The condition of the greens and fairways was typical of most public courses--adequate but not lush by any means. However, the pace of play was surprisingly smooth for a Sunday afternoon. And the best feature in my opinion is the length and layout of many of the holes. With several par 5's and long par 4's it's nice to be able to use every club. At the same time, for the average golfer there is less chance of loosing one's ball (despite narrow fairways in general) because the holes tend to abut one another with a smattering of trees rather than woods between them. A great course for the money, especially if you check on GolfNow. Also, except for a few of the bunkers the sand in the sand traps was soft sand--not hardpan.
New York Country Club
Played On 08/25/2014Scenic and challenging but too many unrepaired divots and ballmarks.
One of the most scenic courses around with interesting and challenging holes that reward good shot making. Played this course in June and it was in perfect condition. However, just a few months later in August I found the course in bad shape--not so much neglected by management, but by golfers failing to replace their divots and failing to fix their ballmarks on the greens. I doubt this was caused by the clubs members. So I would say that the management needs to make a greater effort to remind golfers and/or police this situation. No rangers were in evidence during either of the two rounds I played there this summer.
New York Country Club
Played On 08/25/2014Wonderful course abused by thoughtless golfers
I discovered NYCC in June and it is one of the most scenic and interesting courses around. Also it is a moderately challenging course that rewards good shot-making. In June the course was in pristine condition. However, this time around (two months later) I was appalled at the number of divots that had not been replaced on the fairways and number of ball marks not repaired on the greens. I doubt this damage was done by the club's members. It's a shame that such a beautiful course is allowed to be beaten up by visiting yahoos.
Doral Golf Club, The
Played On 05/11/2014Beautiful and challenging
The course is beautifully kept with well manicured fairways and greens and lots of interesting wildlife--birds and waterfowl. It was a joy to play. It rewards driving accuracy with its narrow fairways and numerous water hazards. Nice to find a private club that accepts reservations from the general public. And especially nice when you can get a reduced rate on GolfNow. Friendly and efficient staff. Also, my wife had a fantastic lesson with the head of instruction--Howard Wykoff--who is excellent.
Pelham Bay at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course
Played On 8/12/2013Great option in the greater NYC area
Pelham Bay is a forgiving links-style course, yet it has reasonable length--not a pitch and put by any means--with some challenging par 4's and 5's and for the most part is very well maintained. Together with it's more challenging 7000+ yard sister course--Split Rock--it is part of a nice 36 hole facility in the north Bronx in the City Island/Orchard Beach area. Except for the jets flying overhead periodically you'd never know you were in the City. Can be a bit crowded on the weekend, though. Best on a weekday or late afternoon.
