Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course
Played On 02/21/2018Home Field Course
It's a fun course for any golfer--I'm an average golfer (15.3 handicap index) who loves the sport and the course offers fun challenges for me. No driving range, of course. Mosholu Golf Course, which is right across the highway (and a drive away), has a driving range and a compact 9-hole course which everyone plays the whole 18.
Many players play at Vanny, as it is aptly known among locals and the general consensus is that they find the course fun as well. The traffic within the course can be tough at certain times—such is the case with most local courses that don’t really strictly enforce a good pace of play, but early birds and twilight hours are best (one can finish a round in 3-hrs or less). If you decide to tee off anytime after 10am or noon, expect to play for a good 4-5-hrs.
Staff is very helpful and courteous... Food is great, but a bit on the steep price. Brews (served both on- and off-course) and alcoholic beverages (served off-course only) are available.
Overall, I love it and I played my first ever round here since I’m a native Bronx resident and fell in love with the sport here and consider Vanny my home course—a little history of it being the oldest public course in the US doesn’t hurt, either. Enjoy!
Maple Moor Golf Course
Played On 12/04/2017Great experience!
I played this course for the very first time and I felt like I’ve played this course forever—and it was only made possible by the extraordinary service of Tom and his crew!
I couldn’t tell you how much it means and how important it is for a newbie in a new course to be treated as a regular! Top marks for the service!
Same goes for the course, as it was kept in amazing shape for a late autumn/early winter round in December! The pro shop is well stocked, and the service, again, is superb, to say the least!
As a golfer who plays nearly two-to-three times a week in and around NYC, I made a commitment to go to Westchester, a 40-minute drive from NYC and didn’t expect much, but I’m completely sold on the overall experience.
A minor wrinkle would be the lack of snack amenities; however, there is a fine restaurant above the pro shop, but trivial things like a bottle of water, or snack, was hard to come by. Had I known earlier, I would’ve bought my own stash—perhaps maybe in the peak seasons, they do, but I didn’t ask; I will update on this next time I visit.
The pace of place was amazing, so water/snacks was not even a concern. The restrooms were well kept, and the free parking was also a great sell!
I wouldn’t mind trekking 40-minutes out of the city to play this course again. Highly recommend this course! Cheers for making my day! I’m sure they will make yours!
Douglaston Golf Club
Played On 12/01/2017Great fun overall!
“Douggy” as I aptly call it, is a great course—short, but sweet, yet challenging to some degree. As a 16-handicap golfer, I truly enjoy the layout. It’s a bit of a trek via car from upper east side Manhattan, but it’s worth it. Staff can be a little more friendlier, and the snack bar can have a bit more variety, but overall, if you’re just playing a good round by yourself or with your friends, it’s a great course!
