The Champion Turf Club at St. James
Played On 05/02/2018Champion Turf at St. James is very, very windy!!
This was my 1st time playing "The Champion Turf Club at St. James" in PSL. Not too much traffic on the day that we played (a Wednesday afternoon). Pretty decent and forgiving layout if you can keep the ball low and get under the wind (which is at least a 2 club difference). Some Tee boxes and Fairways were a little "beat up". More important to me and my partner is that there were no distance markers on the fairways that we could find and no GPS on the carts to help us either. On the plus side, you can play out of the bunkers (fluffy sand) + the greens, although a little too fast for my liking, were nice. My partner wanted me to mention that the staff was hospitable and that the clubhouse homemade chicken salad was the best that she's ever had! FYI on the price: I paid $7.11 on the front end (a $4.98 GN booking fee plus $2.60 EST. tax for 2 players for a 1:23 pm T-time) plus $20 (x2) at the course. No need to pre-book, call this club directly - they advertise $20 price for a midweek afternoon round of golf (but with no booking fees).
Palm Beach National Golf Course
Played On 04/20/2018Palm Beach Nat'l good value at $30 or less
This was my 1st time playing Palm Beach Nat'l in Lake Worth (& the 6th Palm Beach/Martin County course that I've played for the 1st time in the last 3 weeks). PB National has Country music blaring from their P/A system that covers the 1st & 10th tee and driving range. I've never experienced that before... it gave me a headache... too loud. Mike in the Golf shop was friendly and welcoming (good 1st impression) but the starter appeared agitated and only seemed intent on pushing golfers out onto the course, including a much younger and more athletic 4some who teed off less than 5 minutes later and were hitting into the back of us (with a 4some in front of us) for the front 9. The back 9 was more enjoyable because the 4some that was behind us sped in front us at the turn. It was a hot day (85 degrees) but we never saw a concession cart. The course layout is very forgiving and has enough variety in the shape of the holes to make it interesting. Unfortunately, quite a few of the greens were in poor condition (patches of brown and deeply ingrown weeds that bumped putts off line). What does it cost to put GPS on the carts? ...that would be a big +. I paid $30 (+ a $4.98 booking fee thru Golf Now) to play. I would play here again if the price is $30 or less.
Madison Green Country Club
Played On 04/16/2018Ask for the "Course Guide" to help you play Madison Green
This was my 1st time playing here. What I liked: GPS Golf cart; nice layout; well maintained greens and price ($27 + $4.98 GN booking fee + $3.78 Tax = $35.76 p.p. for an early afternoon round of golf for 2 players). What I didn't like: narrow, sloping fairways with water and/or cement like waste areas on the left and right of most of the fairways; very poor greenside bunkers (cement like, not raked in a long time, impossible to play normal bunker shots); $7 for a small bucket of range balls. Summary: It's a tough course for a beginner to early intermediate player standard (like most amateurs that play 1-4 times a month) but I will definitely play here again because I like the challenge. A friendly staff member gave me a detailed, illustrative 'Course Guide' at the end of my round (I wish I had this 'Guide' at the start of my round... without a doubt, it would have helped me shave at least 5-7 strokes from my final score)
Sandhill Crane Golf Club - Championship Golf Course
Played On 04/09/2018Good course for an amateur striving to get better
This was my 1st time playing Sandhill Crane GC. Even though the wind was a factor all day, the fairways were tight but manageable plus there was multiple yardage markings on the 8 Par 4's and the 5 Par 5's to help you which I liked (for control purposes, I used my 3 Wood a lot). I also liked the colored flags (Red front, White middle and Blue back) & the GPS on the cart because it really helped me to play controlled, disciplined golf, resulting in my best round this spring. The greens had a nice consistency to them but they were all too fast on the day that I played (I don't know what the stimpmeter was) which was a bit deflating after quality 2nd shots to the green. Although the course was full on the Monday afternoon that I played, my partner and I did not feel rushed.
