Home Course Recovering from Drought

It was a beautiful day for any outside activity, but especially for golf. The fairways were in great shape and the greens, though slow, have been restored to their pre-drought condition (rolling well on good thick grass). The only real issue was that the course was still too wet for carts on the course which led to slower play than usual. Callahan still ranks in my top three faves and I'll be back soon.

Great Day for Golf

Greens and fairways in great condition. One tee box needs mowing; the rest in good shape. Our foursome kept the ball in play for the most part and the time on course was a reasonable 3.5 hours with groups ahead and behind keeping up the pace. My only disappointment was not breaking 90 :)

I'll be back when the weather's warmer

Though really cold and windy the day I played, the course was easy to warm up to with its player friendly openness. As a first time player on the course, one well appreciated feature was the tips for playing each hole on the hole layout signs. These corresponded to the course information booklet provided by the very helpful staff who also gave a brief overview of all the possible course navigation issues facing a newcomer. I'll definitely come back to play this course the next time I vacation in the Destin area.

A mountain beauty

The course is in good shape except for a couple tee boxes; three and fourteen. This is one of the more scenic courses in the area with a good view of the North GA mountain foothills. The weather was great and the greens were rolling well. The front nine played at a moderately slow pace, 2:10; regrettably, the pace on the back nine was markedly slower; 2:55. Five plus hours on a course I typically play in 3:30 or less tends to bring out less than stellar play and the other players I was paired with made similar comments. Not sure what circumstances produced this, but I will probably avoid playing here on Fridays and weekends going forward.

Course drains well

A rare window of mild, partly cloudy weather coincided with a day off and a Golf Now hot deal. The course was in better condition than I would have thought given all the recent rain, hence the summary title. The greens rolled quickly and well and few were the times that I had to move the ball from a soggy spot in the fairway. Though I seldom get to, I enjoy playing this course. It's not overly long, but is challenging and requires a measure of strategy for each hole. Familiarity is a definite asset and I wouldn't mind becoming more familiar with this track.

More than enough challenge

Fairways and greens were nearly immaculate. Bunkers have real sand deep enough to play like bunkers should. Water and associated undergrowth come into play on > half the holes, and wooded areas protect the rest; errant tee shots will cost you. Five tee boxes provide great variation for the course. For my game all holes are reachable in regulation from box in front of tips. That said, GIRS were in high demand and short supply due to previously mentioned features.

Old Favorite gets better

Newly installed greens have taken hold are are rolling quite well. The back tees are plenty doable, yielding more than enough challenge for the round. Fairway bunkers make accuracy from the tee box a must. Nice views make this N. GA gem a tranquil experience, regardless of how I'm playing.

Becoming my favorite track

Course has lots of variety and difficulty, especially from the rearward tee boxes. Plenty of risk/reward to be found out here. Serene surroundings make for enjoyable golf. Only minus for today was inconsistent green speeds due to sanding; they're hard enough as is.

Ninth Hole is a gem

Interesting, challenging layout. Good length from blue tees. Accuracy from the tee box is a must. I like #9 because this dogleg left provides several options for approaching the green.

Old favorite not so much anymore

The facilities and course are starting to show their age and, consequently, the value for the money is less than average. I would conditionally recommend the course to a friend. It's a good track for working on your game; it's just too short to really challenge.
