White at Tunxis Country Club
Played On 10/23/2020Not the same Tunxis
2020 has been a strange year due to the "virus" and courses have had to do different things but Tunxis seems to have missed something along the way. They lost their long time pro and I am not sure who actually runs the show anymore but on several occasions now I have gone to play and there is no Starter, with people doing whatever they want though mostly considerate, and certainly no one monitoring pace of play on the courses. This latest round I found myself in a threesome that became a fivesome because the group in front of us decided to drink and do shots on the tee box every other hole after they hit their tee shots. Mind you I don't care if you enjoy yourself as long as you consider those around you as well. We had the twosome behind us join us as there were two more groups backed up behind them. We watched these knuckleheads go to one ball at a time, after they found them, to hit their shots. Our five waited on every tee box and every fairway, nobody from from Tunxis around to ask them to pick it up. The result was a midday 5 hour round when we should have been able to get around in under 4 hours. And while other course have been able to figure out limited food service, Tunxis has kept their venues shut down all year. I like Tunxis for a casual round but I hope next season brings some change back to the way it used to be.
Manchester Country Club
Played On 07/07/2020Pleasant Surprise
Thought it would be a quiet weekday afternoon of golf for my wife and I to try a new course and was surprised to find the course very busy. That said, the staff was very pleasant and efficient cleaning carts as the morning wave came in and we teed off pretty close to on time. Didn't pay attention to the fact that the course is very historic having been designed in 1917 by Bendelow and Emmet, and redone in '35 by Tillinghast. What a gem! The greens have a lot of shape and contour to them and the layout was very interesting. Despite being busy, pace of play was just fine and our foursome finished in right about four hours. I definitely will come back again.
Oak Ridge Golf Club
Played On 06/10/2018A nice afternoon of golf
We have played Oak Ridge before and know they host a number of tournaments so we weren't shocked to see carts line up when we arrived but were a little worried about pace of play. I have to say the staff got it right and we were pleasantly surprised. They sent the tourney off 3 as it was a smaller group and paired us up with another GolfNow couple and sent us off 1. We were able to play 18 in 4 hours and had a very nice time. Kudos to the staff for thinking about us too. It was a nice afternoon.
Gillette Ridge
Played On 04/13/2018Early Spring round on the first decent weather day we have had. Gillette Ridge was packed and the pace of play was pretty dismal. Just over 5 hours for 18. Everybody was rusty and there were pins set like it was the Master. How about near the middle of the green for a couple weeks! It also slows down when egos get in the way. Watched the group in front of us hit it 180 off the Blue Tees all day so you get the drift. If everyone played the correct tees it would have maybe been a little better. Hard for someone from the course to tell a group to move up....shouldn't be, but it was hard to watch. Course was in decent shape for early season.
Tower Ridge Country Club
Played On 09/24/2017Hope they can save it
Tower Ridge is a nice mountain course with some challenging holes. Unfortunately, the drought last year has not been recovered from and a number of their greens are in real trouble. Rather than tell you not to play there, I would tell you the opposite. We played on Sunday and there was a groundskeeper working hard on one of the greens. They are trying. Go play a round and hopefully the money will be well spent by them in trying to bring the greens back. The views from holes five, six, and seven are beautiful. Would hate to lose this course.

My wife and I had played here in a tournament before so when we saw a great Hot Deal we grabbed it even though it is an hour from home. There was a member tournament that had to play through before we could tee off but we were still on time and it meant that we had no one behind us for most of the afternoon due to the holiday. We were paired with a couple from the tee time before ours but it was okay. The course was in the best shape of the three times I had played before and the greens were in really nice condition. Tee shots require accuracy as a number of the holes tighten up in the landing area and hazards can get you pretty quickly here, some of which you can not see off the tee. It definitely helped to have played here before. Clubhouse staff was friendly and helped get us out as soon as possible. The couple we played with were newer golfers and we still managed a 4.5 hr round in 90 deg. heat. All in all it was a nice afternoon on a decent course. We would make the drive again.
White at Tunxis Country Club
Played On 05/11/2014Tunxis in nice shape early season
Picture perfect weather and not super busy because of Mother's Day made for a wonderful afternoon of golf with my wife. Tunxis White was in nice early season shape and greens were actually faster than they felt though not speedy. Course is not overly difficult but length of some holes can make it a little tougher. The red tees on a couple holes are actually not fair for my wife but overall okay. We were paired with another couple on the first tee who we had a great time with playing a nice relaxed round.
The Tradition Golf Club At Wallingford
Played On 10/20/2013Pleasantly Surprised
Had never played here before but had heard that it was nice. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised. A fun course that has some easy and then some real challenging holes. There is some elevation changes to the holes but it is not funky, just follows the landscape. The final few holes were definitely tricky but not unfair. The red tees were placed well so that my wife and I were playing our second shots near each other, harder for her but better than some courses we have played. For this late in the season the course was in good condition and greens were very good. I will be giving The Tradition another go in the future.
Pequabuck Golf Club
Played On 1/20/2013A Challenging Round
The course is not long but you better put your Tee shot where it needs to be or it will play difficult. They posted a great 18 hole with cart hot deal and couldn't beat it. The staff is friendly and the course seems to have a very friendly membership. Pace of play was good even though it got a little tight at the end of the round. Still I played 18 in just less than 4hrs. I definitely would play Pequabuck again.
