Black Mountain Golf Course

Wonderful staff. Great views. Solid greens. Potential to be a great course.
Pace of play was terrible. Tee boxes were dirt.

Played On 06/05/2022So much fun in spite of the gales!
Crystal Coast offers a great mix of tight ‘resort course’ routing with a few good ‘hitters’ holes. It was so much fun to play in spite of the 20 MPH plus winds that day. There is just something interesting about aiming 15 yards right and watching the ball move sideways toward the target. Yes, there were a few spotty patches in the fairways, but all else was pretty nice. Go visit.

Pros:
Great layout!
Fair hitters’ course
Beautiful clubhouse
Nice staff
Cons:
They started groups on 10 just before we made the turn. Pace of play ground to a halt. We quit after 14.
Greens hadn’t recovered from punching - very inconsistent.

Rams Hill Golf Club
Played On 12/31/2021Well worth the trip
Although it's quite a haul to Borrego Springs from San Diego, it was absolutely worth the trip. It's another world out there - Palm Springs-like mountain views and desert rough. And when the winds pick up like they did that day, man, that back nine gets LONG! But I loved it all!
Maderas Golf Club
Played On 12/30/2021Great escape from cloudy San Diego
It was rainy and cloudy in San Diego, but the trip up to Maderas gave us mostly clear skies and a nice day to play. The course was in winter condition, but honestly it's better than anything back home in NC right now. The surroundings are beautiful and the layout is challenging but fair. Best of all, EVERYONE on staff was amazingly nice and accommodating. Go play Maderas
Springdale Country Club
Played On 09/07/2020Despite the negatives, a hidden gem
Despite the rough edges, Springdale is an out-of-the-way treat. Here are the pros/cons:
Pros:
Interesting layout - bring lots of different shots for your tee game
Beautiful surroundings - a mix of flat valley holes and twisting, changing elevated holes
Friendliest staff you will ever meet
Bunkers were pretty nice - a rarity this year
There were signs of maintenance everywhere (verticut fairways, plugged greens). They will fix it up.
Cons:
Pace of play was terrible - over 5 hours (but it was Labor Day)
Fairways were thin due to exorbitant rains this summer
Some greens showed significant bare spots
All in, we will return later this fall after the course has a chance to continue healing from a long, wet summer. But we will book an early tee time to try and avoid the slow pace of play.
Cummings Cove Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/12/2019Good course, spotty service
It's worth a drive off the beaten path to get to Cummins Cove. The course layout is a typical mountain course (i.e. tight, up and down, not terribly long, with a premium on keeping the ball in play). Greens were absolutely perfect, and fairways were nice with just a few bare/under repair spots. The layout is a little quirky, but it fits into the site. Moreover, some of the mountain vistas are absolutely spectacular. I thoroughly enjoyed playing there!
My negatives surround the staff. I understand this is mostly a members' course, and those guys come and go without a lot of help. But we had to wait quite a while to even get acknowledged upon entering the shop. The guy manning the counter didn't seem too excited to even get us registered and on the course.
Ditto getting a cart. They were supposed to be "just outside" per the front counter guy, but they were nowhere to be found. I finally had to lead the counter guy down the hill to the cart shack where we interrupted the cart attendant's meal to bring a cart out. Just weird.
The server/bartender in the restaurant was awesome, though, and that really helped balance things.
All in, the on-course experience outweighed the off-course, and I would certainly go back!
Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club
Played On 10/06/2019A gem
This time of year our Western NC courses normally show their wear and tear. Fairways are typically weedy and thin, and greens are questionable. Cleghorn couldn't have been more different! The fairways were plush Bermuda, but they weren't mud bogs. And the greens were undulating, true, quick, and consistently maintained. I don't recall seeing a spot of burned out turf or ratty green anywhere.
The layout is up and down (as advertised) - you won't get many flat shots. But most lies were level, allowing you plenty of opportunity to get a good swing on the ball. Tee shots are fair - there is room to spray the ball a bit. But the rough and woods are thick. Anything far offline is probably going to be lost. The greens offered many tiers with some tough pin positions possible (we saw some). We had to play for the ball to roll out a little more on the greens than is normal at some of our other area courses, but that added to the challenge. The overall setting is a beautiful old plantation, and it offers some pretty stunning views.
We'll be back!
