Hidden Gem

Absolutely gem of a golf course that I never knew existed. Short course, but offers a good mix of shots involved, greens rolled very nicely and overall the course was in great shape.

One of the better golf values around the Triad. Course winds through tall pines, a lovely neighborhood and has some good elevation changes I honestly didnt know existed in Lexington.

Highly recommend!

Mediocre Experience at Best

This was my first time playing Tot Hill Farm in 10-12 years. After the frustration that followed my first round, I swore never to come back, however a friend was in town from GA and his brother in law set up the tee time, so off I went.

We had a 9:10 tee time and I got to the course at roughly 8 am. Parked the car and went into the club house to check in, pay and get some range balls. The young lady working was very friendly and engaging, definitely the highlight of the staff experience. I paid for my round and asked for a bucket of range balls and she made the statement that I was getting basically the last bucket of balls. This really shocked me, how can you be out or almost out of range balls at 8 am?

She said something about how there had been a bunch of groups off already that morning and how everyone bought range balls, etc but still...its 8 am, you should have enough range balls on hand to get you through until at least lunch time.

After heading over to the range, sure enough, I heard others who arrived after me on the putting green complaining about how they were out of range balls, etc. This is completely inexcusable in my opinion and is nothing but laziness and lack of preparation on the courses part, which seemed to be a common theme as our round progressed.

The course was in pretty good shape, not perfect by a long shot, but better than average I guess. We had a discounted rate of roughly $45 and for the money I have played several courses in/around the Triad this year who were in better shape and more finely manicure. Many of the tee boxes hadnt been mowed in probably a week, crab grass all over the tees and in several fairways, bare spots/dirt on many greens, etc.

The greens were slow. I kept waiting for them to speed up as the temperatures increased and they dried out, but they never did. They rolled OK, but were very slow which was a disappointment.

The layout, as most everyone knows, its basically goofy golf in my opinion. The course is very visually appealing and very unique to what you will find basically any where with the big elevation changes, rock formations, creeks, rock bunkers, rocks here, rocks there and more rocks. There are several blind shots throughout the course and definitely a premium put on accuracy. Absolutely beautiful course design to look at, but can be very frustrating to the average golfer.

Biggest complaint about the round was the lack of attention to detail by the course management. The lack of range balls was nothing more than lack of preparation or someone caring. The temps were in the high 80's during our round, felt more like the mid 90's and yet there wasn't water in basically any of the coolers that we passed on the course., which again is completely inexcusable.

Until there is someone at this course who prioritizes the guest experience over everything else, this course will never regain the prestige that it had 10-15 years ago. There are only so many things in the golf course business that you can control, but you can most definitely control things like making sure you have range balls on a Holiday Monday and making sure there are water in all of the coolers. The speed/condition of the greens are forgivable, but to me the other stuff is not.

Hopefully someone there gets a clue and makes some changes, but I definitely won't be going back to find out.

Great experience at The Oaks

Hadn't played Forest Oaks in a couple of years, but my buddy made a tee time there Saturday morning at 9:32 for four of us.

Got to the course around 8:45 or so, was greeted in the parking lot by the cart attendant/starter/overall nice guy. He asked when our tee time was, gave us a run down on where everything was and asked if we needed anything. Went inside to what I assume is a new pro shop, when I played 2 or so years ago it was downstairs, it is now upstairs and very nice. Tripp in the pro shop was real nice, told us the greens had been punch a week ago and were about 70% back, which was a bit of a disappointment, but hey they got to punch them sometime.

Got our keys, some range balls and went over to get our carts. Two guys there, one the same that greeted us originally got us all set on the carts and we went to hit some range balls before heading to the first tee.

Pace of play was excellent. We were fortunate enough to have nobody in front of us which was great. We did have a 3 some behind us that we let play through on #10 and then a 2 some behind then that we let pass after we teed off on #11. Both groups thanked us and off they went never to be seen again.

The course was in very good shape, with the greens being the only reason it wasnt excellent over all. Tees and fairways were on point and the rough, though it was pretty freshly mowed was thick and challenging as you would expect from a course of this stature. The greens were bumpy/slow from the aeration, however I have no doubt that a week from now they will be rolled, smooth and in perfect condition.

Course has a real nice layout to it, on the longer side which is nice and you get to hit a variation of clubs that you don't at most other public courses in the area.

Stopped in the bar/grill after our round and grabbed a hot dog and beer while we watched some football. The bartender was awesome and very pleasant.

All and all a great day on the course and somewhere we will definitely be visiting again.

Great layout and condition

Played on a Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm to take advantage of the twilight rate of $32. First off, the course is an absolute steal at $32.

This is a very well designed golf course that was well though out and executed. Very appealing to the eye, has a lot of trees lining the fairways, but all and all it wasn't overly tight. Played very fair without a bunch of blind shots or gimmicks.

There was nobody in front of us, so pace of play was great. We had a 3 some and allowed two singles to play through us during the round.

Greens were in great shape, had just been top dressed earlier that day it seemed, so were a bit sandy to start the round, but that disappeared after it rained for 20 or 30 minutes. They were punched 3-4 weeks back, didnt show much sign of that, rolled great and were receptive.

One tee box on the first par 3 was in rough shape, but all of the fairways and greens were pretty close to perfect.

Staff was very friendly, nice range facility with chipping area as well as a separate putting green.

All three of us thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back for sure.
