Nice, but not for beginners or real high handicappers

My wife and I played Legend Trail Golf Club and had an overall positive experience. As you drive up to the club house, you will find the normal club drop off area with some nice guys there to get your equipment out of your car and onto a golf cart while you park your car. The club house is a bit small consisting of the pro shop and a restaurant. The guys behind the desk were very helpful and welcoming and got us on our way very quickly. As we exited the pro shop, we found our cart parked just a few steps away adjacent to the putting green. They have an interesting set up for putting with about three different putting areas and another set up for just chipping and sand shots. Just past those areas is a small driving range stocked with balls. After warming up, we talked to the starter who directed us to the first tee box and got us on our way. The overall condition of the course is very good with nice fairways and roughs. The greens were a bit hard for my liking but very playable and rolled true. The front 9 played fairly easy with few surprises or difficult holes. The back 9 is a bit different and more challenging, especially if you have not played the course before. A bit of warning: if your tee shot can’t carry at least 135 to 150 yards, you will need to hit off the women’s tee box or you will be frustrated with a number of the holes. I’m an average golfer and had no problem with any of these holes, but if you have an issue with your driver, either don’t play this course or play the ball forward off the front tee box. The entire course has a lot of contour (especially the back 9) so be prepared for shots that will not be on level ground. A number of the back 9 holes also are heavily trapped, so it is imperative that you fly your shot on to the green. There are plenty of restroom opportunities out on the course so that shouldn’t be a problem for the enlarged prostate crowd. If you hit a half decent ball, you should not have a problem on the course. If not, expect to be searching around in a lot of cactus and brushy areas to find your ball. Hitting off the copper tees, distance is not an issue for the average golfer, but accuracy is. A GPS with a mapping function would be very useful if you want to play this course, because there are a lot of little surprises that you can’t see until you get right on top of them. I was a bit disappointed to discover that the carts don’t have a GPS, so we used our own iPhone based program that saved us a lot of strokes. We played on a Monday and the pace of play was comfortable at about 4 hours and 10 minutes for the round. Overall, I would recommend the course as it offers interesting challenges and plays well for average to better golfers.

We had a good time.

This was our first time playing Dove Valley Ranch. Upon arriving, two friendly young guys politely removed our bags from the car and got them situated on the cart while we drove to the parking area. Entering the club house, the proshop sits directly ahead with the snack bar located on the left along with the restrooms. The club, while small, was compact and clean. The guy at the desk was very helpful and friendly giving us all the information that we would need to get us going. Range balls cost a nominal $2 for about 30 balls. After leaving the clubhouse, the guys where we left our bags directed us to the range and the putting green. The putting green and chipping area were in fairly good shape , but the driving range left a bit to be desired. Even if it is winter, the grass in the hitting areas was thin to non-existent. After warming up, we headed back to the snack bar to get water and to start our round. The starter got us paired up with a nice couple and we were off. The front nine is fairly straight forward and offers some interesting challenges, but nothing out of the ordinary. A couple of the holes are located right next to busy streets so that was kind of distracting. We moved along at a good pace finishing the front in under 2 hours. After a quick bathroom break at the turn, we headed off to the back nine. The back nine starts off with a straight away par 4, but then gets a bit weird. There are a number of holes that have split fairways, or washes that have to be traversed. You need to pay strick attention to the GPS maps on the cart or you will choose the wrong club or hit the wrong shot. The greens were cut very short and gave a ball little chance of stopping if on a downhill portion of the green. Putting was definitely a challenge. If you miss a green with your approach shot, chances are good it will roll off into the bushes forcing you to drop. We ended up finishing the round in about 4 hours. It would have been faster, but the unusual layout of the course caused some delays. We did have fun because we were playing golf, but this would not be a course that I would hurry back to play.

Thank you for sharing your full experience at Dove Valley Ranch. We take pride in our staff and pace of play and glad you had a great experience with both! Being a Robert Trent Jones Jr course, there are always a couple of holes that require some course knowledge to navigate correctly. Once you have played holes 12, 14 and 15 once you are all set for the future! The others are straightforward, but definitely can cause the golfer more trouble than the front nine! Hope you come back out now that you know where to go!

Nice day of Golf

Played with my wife and friends. The course is in nice shape. The roughs are cut appropriately and the fairways and greens are in very nice shape. We played on a day that was cart path only due to the multiple days of rain. The greens are challenging, but appropriate for all golfers.
