The worse condition course I have ever played .. layout great!

I have given this course 2 stars which is the lowest I have ever given a course on here over hundreds of reviews. One star is for the layout which is probably one of the most interesting I have seen for a while. The other is for the greens which amazingly were really nice, although had not been mowed. As for the rest, terrible. I phoned and asked if it was fully open given most courses were struggling they said yes summer greens, winter tees. So I drove the hour to get there. I had a drink in the bar and listened to people raving about College Pines which is the best winter course in my own area (plus Kilton). I spoke to the pro in the shop, who was watching football and gave out minimal information. The first hole is an interesting layout but we struggled to locate the actual fairway given the grass was not defined. But, as soon as we stepped off the tee off mat, we knew why. It was a swamp on every fairway, even the rough on EVERY hole. On some holes it was literally like hitting across a field (13th) as you could not even tell if there had ever been a fairway. Only the greens made it worth trudging, losing shoes, losing balls in the middle of the comedy fairways and wanting to see the layout which I say again could be amazing in a dry summer. The course should not have been open and definitely should not have been 28 pounds. We decided that we would have it out with the Pro when we trudged back, but he was long gone at 5pm, probably realising the course was stealing money at 28 quid. The daft thing is I would go back in the height of summer as the layout is really interesting. But if the members there think thats golf, then they should move to Worksop and play College Pines and Kilton Forest. I have a real problem with courses that are not open and honest about condition, just say its bad out there but we are open to ensure we still have an income in touch times, so please bear with us. This course is worth maybe 10 to 15 pounds as it is, do not pay anything more until there has been a long dry period. Sorry OFGC as I imagine this course can be lovely.

Absolutely superb, love this course!

This is one of my favourite courses in the area, its about 35 minutes drive from Doncaster and at 25 pounds on a weekday in winter it is an absolute steal. The reason why I say this is because they blow away the leaves and moisture from the greens and have a great tee box management programme so you are not teeing off in amongst a load of divots. My favourite 18 is Forest and then Pines but you can meet waiting groups on the 10th tee which is annoying but worth the wait. For me this is a proper, grown up course and is a superb challenge for any level of golfer. The bunkers were in great condition, the greens although wet were true running and well looked after. This course has draw and fade holes, long and short holes and some great par 3 holes too. Get into the Pines part of the 18 and you experience the SI18 par 5 hole which is I think the hardest on the whole 18, followed by an SI2 par 3 of 170 yards over a lovely pond which is one of the easiest holes on the 18. Not sure who decided how the SIs were worked out. But anyway, a fantastic course that if you get to play when its being cared for is for me one of the best in this area and could easily command 50 quid in winter at weekends and 60 or 70 in summer, its that good.

Great winter course, long holes makes a good challenge

Kilton is not seen as one of the higher level courses in our area, but then winter comes and all of a sudden those people who did not give it a moment then realise its one of the best courses in the area during bad weather. The fairways are quite long grass but more lush than unkempt, the greens are fine and in some places you will find the odd bobble but its a 15 or 20 quid course with limited staff, what can you honestly expect? The course has some solid par 4s and par 5s which are not easy to reach even for long hitters in the winter weather. The course is quite open and hole 11 can be affected by flooding but only meaning a shorter green. The staff are really helpful and friendly, the food is excellent. I would be surprised if you can find a better value course which is fully open in the area. The best winter course by a mile is College Pines GC but thats 32 quid and packed out in winter. Do not dismiss Kilton if you live locally, it will surprise you and if you want a round in the bad weather this course is solid.

Monday rate great, leaves becoming the issue now

I love Bondhay, many do not, but it tests your abilities to the extreme and for those wanting a fun easy round, this might not fit your dream day out. I have played here regularly as a visitor and lately it is always in a great playable state and I am really glad to see they have put out proper fences to keep people away from the greens with wheeled trollies and buggies now. This will help it stay in a playable and for those who duck under them and ruin the course, take a look at yourselves as you will be first to moan when courses become unplayable. We played on an October morning and although the weather was great, autumn has begun and the thousands of trees at Bondhay are now shedding their leaves meaning a shot to the edge of the fairway or first cut is now potentially a lost ball. I know it would be great if they blew all the leaves away and or collected them, but in reality I doubt the course has the money or the time to do it every day. For me I will think twice about going now until the better weather comes back in 2024, but I will miss the course and the 18th which is one of favourite holes across all courses.

Lovely layout, greens a bit fluffy, but will play again!

After a drive in the dark across the Peak District i arrived at this lovely hotel and golf course. Once I found the golf parking (drive all the way through the hotel car park and right of a down ramp) I found the full glory of this course. The clubhouse overlooks the 18th par three over water and you can tell this is going to be a good course. The first six holes are pretty straight forward, then you hit the 7th and the fun starts. From here onwards the holes are challenging, interesting and lovely to look at. The greens were very fluffy when we went so putts had to be struck hard to stay online and reach the holes. Some of the walks between holes are tough, but its worth the effort. Finishing on a par 3 might sound too easy, but over water with the whole clubhouse balcony watching, try that for pressure! Although this is a long trek to get to, I would certainly revisit in good weather as I imagine added wind and rainfall would make this a very tough, long round. Bar guy was really helpful and the cheese and ham toastie was lovely. Might have to try an overnighter here soon as at £139 in winter months, it looks a bargain IF the weather is mild and dry.

Always a challenge, but one of the best local courses

Many hate this course, it has millions of trees and bunkers but that is just part of the make up of this lovely course. Take your medicine and expect to be in the trees on most holes, chip out and start again. Some of the holes are absolute beauties, 1,4,9,10,11,17 and 18 being my absolute favourite. At 40 pounds this is probably the top money you would pay for this course. Food is great here and overall this is a really good course to visit. It might rip your golfing ability to shreds but you need to come here and test your abilities.

What a tragedy, such a great layout

I have played this course every now and again over 30 years of playing golf, it used to be right up with the best, but now its a very sad sight. You can tell as you drive in that maintenance is an issue, not just the road but the grass cutting with inferior machines is obvious and in view as you drive down the entrance road. The clubhouse is a dimly lit, almost closed down old building and scorecards are badly photocopied pieces of paper. But, get on the course and the layout is absolutely brilliant, yes the fairways are long grass and covered in cuttings, yes the greens are absolutely rubbish and rock hard and quick. But you can see this layout and the maturity of the course is just so good, if only someone could buy it and spend a few million on it (unlikely). If you can forget the terrible greens and avoid the long rough and see through the maintenance issues, there is a wonderful course underneath all the rubbish. I know some people are going to slate it, but at 20 quid I would play this course again in the hope that they had managed to get it back to something decent. The fact there is a burnt out mowing machine beside the tee on one hole shows what they are up against with vandalism rife and an obvious lack of funding. I doubt this course will ever make it back to being A1 condition so anyone playing there will have to plod round teary eyed thinking how good this course could have been. Here is hoping they can gain some investment and then I will be straight back to play it and pay whatever you want.

Great layout, needs TLC

We play this course probably ten times a year at various times, this time it was a red hot September morning with lots of dew, so quite wet, I always enjoy the layout and challenge but I am always disappointed to see tee boxes which get no love from greenkeepers nor players. The course could be one of those that is up there with the right investment, but I am sure we could say that about many courses. Staff are always great, food and drink is fine. The course is a moderate challenge for a decent player with the third hole being the hardest on the course. I always like the 7th par 3 as I can never remember what club it should be. Best to play this course in summer months as it can be very boggy, but it is priced competitively and its very easy to book and get on. Keep away from the bunkers as they tend to be full of water or compacted sand. There are definitely worse courses for more money so give it a go if you want a decent value knock.

Nice layout, needs some TLC to be considered very good

We were interested to play this 9 hole, 18 tee position course as we regularly play the excellent par 3 18 hole course down the road at Ramsdale Parek GC which is excellent. We hoped we might find an adequate replacement. It was captains day when we arrived so it was great to see the place buzzing and the food and drinks were excellent before the round. This 9 hole round has par 4's, 3's and a 5 so its like a mini normal course. The first hole layout looks great and until you get to the greens, it is great but then unfortunately the greens are tatty and not up to scratch. I am sure they are not the same on the championship course so why on this course? always puzzles me. But the layout is really interesting and it has potential if looked after a bit more carefully. It would not be a bad warm up for a round on the championship course later but its not worth travelling far to play specifically. Lovely facilities though, great breakfast!

Always playable, slightly pricey at £26 twilight

Town Moor GC is a nice little golf club which is always generally easy to get on and is quite playable. Course layout is decent, give or take a few random members of public who hang around on the course (nothing the golf club can do about that). Could do with some new signage for holes as the drawn ones do detract from what is a nice course. Greens were in good nick and fairways still quite grassy in the scorching weather. We paid £26 which for 4.52pm in twilight time is higher than other local courses like Wheatley at £25, Styrrup £20, Bawtry £25 all of which are much better courses.

As hard as ever, but we love it!

Bondhay is widely regarded as the hardest course in the local area and many shy away from it or call in sick for this round. Wayward shots end up in the trees, but take your medicine and chip out to the fairway and carry on and you can score round here. Try and be Tiger Woods from in the trees and you will get eaten up by this course. Some wonderful holes in 4, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and one of the best 18th holes you will play anywhere (which for the first I went for in two yesterday). Pro shop always helpful, food is great and facilities are all there. It would have got a 10 but for some tee off mats and the odd green which still needs to level out and a couple of missing 150 yard markers. We will always come back and love/hate it depending how we play. If you have not played this course, go there and experience it. It is not for high handicappers or those who are wayward, they will hate it. Do it, you know its a must!

Nice easy good value golf

It’s not the hardest course in the area, but it’s open, it’s cheap at £22 in the week, you can always get on and now they are cutting the fairways and greens it’s very playable. The staff are always happy to see you and lately we’ve see some work happening around the first tee with a nice bridge over the pond and some drainage being added. A couple of the SI’s are a bit strange but every course has that. For me the hardest hole is 12, best holes are 11, 14 and 18. As it’s short and only a par 69 (course rating 112) it won’t challenge the better golfers but for a day of decent golf with a lovely clubhouse for food and drinks afterwards, it’s got to be on the list.

Ok for winter at least it’s all open

Its a very easy course with many scoreable holes but when other courses are on temps and mats in winter this course at least allows you to tee off grass and hit actual greens. Yes it’s a bit untidy and needs some TLC and maintenance but it’s fully open, reasonably priced, pleasant staff and you can get on easily. Don’t go thinking it’s Augusta as it’s nowhere near but go to keep your game going in winter and it’s decent. With one par 5 and around 4 really interesting holes it will keep you interested but it’s not a wow course for me, but in winter I’ll go every week to get a knock.

Lots of leaves, greens decent, fairways rough

This course is one for going to just for a round of golf, not one you have on your bucket list as it’s not brilliant just functional. Fairways are pretty rough, not defined and covered in leaves which is common at courses at this time of year. Greens were surprisingly good and the layout isn’t bad with a couple of decent holes but some pointless holes like 17 which doesn’t allow any corner cutting. For £18 it was fine, but if it was any more it would be overpriced on current state of fairways.

Lovely, well kept scoring course

My first visit and won’t be my last, course in superb condition and we caught it on the best weather day in October with blazing sun and no wind. First 3 holes are a scoring delight then you hit 4 and 6 which can mess up anyone’s scorecard believe me. If you have a buggy it’s worth driving down some of the holes to see what’s over brows or round corners as if you try to be clever on some holes you will pay the price. Par 3’s are all pretty straight forward for decent golfers and all holes are reachable in regulation I would say. Nice little halfway hut and pro shop as you go to the back nine and enjoy some more nicely laid out holes. The greens were absolutely amazing in quality and like lightning too. Expect the ball to shoot off the green if you don’t hit them with any elevation. The bar and eating area looked lovely even though we did not have time to use it. We will be back as I need to play holes 4 and 6 properly next time. But what I would say is, try this course as it’s way better than Oakmere, maybe beats Ramsdale too in some ways. I have to admit it was perfect golfing conditions which always makes for a better experience.

Bargain price, hard walking course

It’s about three years since I last played this course and it is somewhat of a hidden gem just outside Sheffield. It’s quite an up and down course and can be a hard walk for most, but the challenge of the course makes it worth it. Long par fours, only one par five and that’s reachable in two but all the par threes are challenging. Course was in very good condition and greens were lovely, only thing I would pick out is that some of the surrounds looked tired and well used, but that’s being very picky. We paid £22 which was an absolute bargain for a course of this quality and we were virtually playing alone with no one in front or behind. They are installing winter tees and greens but I would suggest you should get there now and enjoy it before the weather starts making it less playable.

Take your medicine course, do nothing clever

The title of my review might seem a bit weird but it’s true, on this course you have to do exactly what it says. Bondhay is a course you can love or hate, personally I love it. Yes, it’s one of the hardest courses in the area, yes it can chew you up and spit you out, but who wants to play easy courses every week?? 8 of us played and the course was in lovely condition given the summer we’ve had. Greens were quick, fairways were back to lush and trees just as frustrating. Bondhay punishes wayward shots with tree lined fairways and great bunkering. If you creep into the trees then you have to take your medicine and chip out in whatever direction works best, which in some cases can be another fairway. Try a worldly shot through a perceived gap and you may find your ball ricocheting around into deeper problems. I always chuckle when I see bad reviews of this course as it’s absolutely certain the course has destroyed them and the review is their way of getting back. The guys in the pro shop are always welcoming and chatty, the food is excellent and the practice facilities are good. Oh and the random table and chair off the 9th is actually a sad reminder of where the halfway house used to be, not some sort of junk yard. So if you think you are a good golfer give this course a try and if you score over 30 stableford points off a genuine handicap break out the champagne, you have done well. We will be back, because we love it and because we hate it at the same time!

Hidden Gem

My first visit after high praise from other golf society members. The pro mentioned that the greens weren’t their best but believe me some courses would be happy with greens of this quality even though they’d been hallow tined. Started with a breakfast which was lovely and then enjoyed a leisurely paced round. Layout is good with a few challenging holes mixed in with reachable others. Certainly somewhere I would return to as the friendly nature of the staff plus the interesting layout with some very small greens appeals to me a lot.

A very nice course

My first time playing this course which was to see if I would book a weekend golf break there for our big society. The course was very nice, not excellent but very nice. It matched the typical hotel dual course layout, nothing too hard and nothing too quirky, just very nice holes and layout. Certainly somewhere we would consider for a golf break as its slightly cheaper than the (better) more expensive options of Arden, Carden and Slaley, Nottinghamshire. Decent pro shop, pleasant staff and as we were first out, pace of play excellent. I would certainly play the Woodland course to see what thats like (we played the Lakes) but when considering a golf break part of me thinks I'd pay £40 more to play some of the other options which are slightly better manicured and more difficult courses.

Lovely Course, Good Layout, Food Amazing

The course is lovely, nicely laid out, challenging but can allow you score points if you are accurate into the greens. We played it in March just before the trees regained their leaves and i reckon this course might be more challenging when they are back as they will narrow the course a bit more. A great experience and we will certainly play it again. The full English breakfast and bacon sandwiches were THE BEST we have ever had and believe me that is high praise as we play over 50 courses a year. Stunning food and great staff serving it. Thank you everyone !
