Mission Mountain Golf Club
Played On 08/01/2020Good for mid-handicaps and beginners
This is like your garden variety muni transported to a beautiful place. As a low handicapper, I found it easy except a couple of nice holes on the back side. Wide open with accessible greens. Conditions were ok -- spotty here and there. A great place for someone to learn the game.
Mission Mountain Golf Club
Played On 08/01/2020Good course for mid- or high handicappers
This course is like your average muni transported to a beautiful location. As a low handicapper, I found it to be easy. There are a couple of great holes on the back nine from the tips -- especially a 600 yd par 5 -- but overall there was tons of room for errant shots and the greens were accessible. Conditions were average. It would be a great course for a beginner and a 15-handicapper would find it challenging.
Bear Creek Golf Club
Played On 06/16/2020Good layout
I played the tips from 7,000 yds and it was a challenging but fair layout. A lot of well designed holes with some risk/reward on some. Conditions were good. Pace of play was adequate.
Twin Pines Country Club
Played On 06/09/2020Essy but entertaining enough
Low handicappers won't have any trouble here but it is a nice little course for the price. Friendly staff.
Lake Presidential Golf Club
Played On 06/08/2014A great course slowly being ruined
I used to love this course. It's a great layout and beautiful. But they are ruining it. Houses are going up everywhere, ruining the views. The pace of play for a 1 p.m. start time was glacial. The marshals took nine holes and repeated calls to finally crack down on a problem foursome ahead of us. The bar is understaffed. I can play a 5 hour round on a Muni for half the price. Next time I will.
Old Hickory Golf Club
Played On 04/26/2014Challenging from tips
We played mid-afternoon on a Saturday and finished in near darkness because of the pace of play. The course is built through a housing development. The holes are generally tight as a result and some of them would challenge PGA players from the tips -- i.e. 465 yard par 4 with a tight landing area with OB on the left and a hazard on the right and a well-guarded green and a 630 yard finishing hole. I love a challenge but it wasn't that much fun to play. There were some fairways that sloped into drainage areas that were pockmarked with divots because virtually every ball ends up there. Being in a development, it wasn't scenic. So all in all, this is a one and done for me.
Clustered Spires Golf Course
Played On 7/28/2013A Pleasant Course
This a pleasant course where you won't lose many golf balls. My wife, a beginner, liked it a lot for that reason. I'm a 4 handicap, and I found it pretty easy, even from the tips, although there are three or four challenging holes, including a 237-yard par 3 and a 491 yard par 4. If there was more trouble nearer the fairways, it would be decent tournament course, but you can get away with a lot of bad swings. The conditions were nice and the course is attractive. Pace of play for a Sunday afternoon was good.
Whiskey Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/14/2013Great Course. Needs A Marshall.
Whiskey Creek is quality golf course in every way. However, my round on a Sunday afternoon was excruciatingly slow. Someone up ahead was playing at a snail's pace and there wasn't a marshal to be seen. I was having a great round from the tips, 2 under through 8, but the 5-to-10 minute waits on the tee boxes finally got to me. So advice to course management: light a fire under the slowpokes. While we are still young.
Cross Creek Golf Club
Played On 06/05/2013Decent Layout, Neglected Conditions
This isn't a bad course in principle There are some interesting holes that require good shot-making. I got an afternoon deal for $19 so I figured I couldn't go wrong. It's early June, however, and the fairways are already burning out. The sand traps don't have sand in them and do have rocks (I am a stickler for the rules but I even gave myself a practice swing in the first bunker because I wasn't sure whether my club could penetrate the surface.) At the moment the 14th hole does not exist because it was superseded by the recently constructed ICC. They have a chipping mat next to the green, not a real hole. It didn't help that we had a glacial foursome in front of us. The marshal came by but he never solved the problem. That said, if you just want to hit some interesting shots and you have an afternoon, go for it. I wouldn't go out of my way, however.
