Rockleigh Golf Course - Red/White
Played On 05/20/2020Hadn't played this course in many years. First, it was just so refreshing to be out again doing something I enjoy after being locked down for the past few months due to Covid-19. The course's new rules to aid in preventing any spread of this virus were more than adequate and did not really take away the fun of playing. The only negative was that the sand traps were in poor condition. That said, the tee boxes, fairways and greens were perfect! Looking forward to going back again and highly recommend this course.

I used to play this course a number of times evey season and referred to it as my home course. For a county course that gets heavy traffic it always was in decent shape. Due to scheduling conflicts I no longer have the time to golf as much in recent years. Reading recent reviews of this course I was a bit concerned over the course conditions. However, when I played on August 30, 2019 this is what I found. Tee boxes had some bare spots but more than enough good areas to find a sufficient tee area. Rough was not too bad. Fairways had several bare and burned out spots but most areas were in decent shape. Traps were OK, but never was a strong point at this course. Greens were very smooth and nice. Ball marks for the most part were repaired by golfers and maintenance staff so they didn't really pose an issue. In short, despite some of the recent reviews I read I thought the course was in overall good shape with some additional work needed to bring back the fairways toits prior quality. Looking forward to playing there agin before the season ends.

I have not played at Rutgers in about five years. Prior to that I typically played there about 2-3 times a year. The course layout is nice and one of the main selling points was the course conditions were usually perfect. A friend of mine and I were going to be in the area on September 24 so I suggested we play at Rutgers noting my past experiences. To my surprise and shock the fairways on this course were absolutely horrible. There were so many bare spots and burnt out grass areas we joked that it was better to hit in the rough or the traps. This deterioration didn't happen overnight. They should not be charging normal rates for a course in this poor condition. When we asked why the fairways were so bad we were advised it was due to heavy rains, poor drainage and hot, dry spells. My firend and I have played numerous rounds at other courses in the NJ/NY metro area and none of them had fairways in poor condition yet they all expereinced the same weather patterns. I would love to play this course again but only if and whn it returns to a conditon of quality as in the past.

I used to play this course many times in past years but have not been able to for quite a while. My return trip was great. Course is challenging as always and was in good shape, especially considering it's a public course and can have some heavy traffic. The greens were in perfect condition. Cut short and smooth. Kudos to the staff for keeping them in such great shape and a thumbs up to the golfers who obviously did their part in keeping the greens in such great shape by fixing ball marks.
