Buffalo Ridge Springs Golf Course
Played On 07/03/2023Best of the big three
My 1st choice in the area. Every hole is a postcard. Very challenging and fun to play. Course conditions were top of the line. If you are looking for a quick round, not the course to play. Everyone is taking pictures and enjoying the round. A lot of trouble if you don't hit straight.
Ozarks National
Played On 07/02/2023Hardest of the big three
After playing Paynes Valley the cart boy said we were in for a big change and challenge at Ozarks so we asked him what he meant. He said: " narrow fairways, elevation changes and blind shots." And boy he wasn't kidding. In our group, I think I heard the same comment after every hole. "Boy, if I played this again I would definitely approach it differently." If you are trying to score well a forecaddy would be worth the money. The conditions were nice but with being past my prime a few of the carrys' were challenging.
Payne's Valley
Played On 07/01/2023Better than previous ratings
I agree with the previous write up. Was not expecting much from the ratings. But it exceeded all expectations.
Really good players will find it boring because it's wide open with a lot of room in the fairways. Every hole is a postcard. The 19th hole might be a gimmick but it was fun to play and the ride after that was extraordinary. Very winding the day we played so it added a little more challenge but I didn't feel it needed any more of a challenge. Played all three courses, Buffalo Ridge and Orarks National and this was the easiest but by no means a walk in the park. I'm from upstate NY so mountains are nothing new but this was an entirely different kind of experience.

Normanside Country Club
Played On 05/28/2023best value in the capital district
Great course, played it several times and always in top notch condition. Greens rolling out and true. Level tee boxes. A little construction going on but really didn't come into play except third hole. Management friendly and courteous, Country Club conditions where general public is actually welcomed.
Golf Club of Newport, The
Played On 06/24/2018Very nice course.
Greens roll true and in decent shape.
Allot of hillside shots in the fairway.
One of the better public courses around.
A really good deal with an outing.
Lunch at the turn and a “cook your own” steak dinner.
All for under $75 with a group.
Leatherstocking Golf Course
Played On 09/30/2017A must play course
The first 8 holes are what I call the "valley section". A few hole with elevation changes but pretty straight forward. The next 4 are the "mountain section". Major elevation changes and side hill lies. Many great views from the mountain side section. I believe the 12th drops down farther than it is long. I love that par 3. Then you come down off the mountain and do three holes in the valley again. Then the fun part. The 16th through the 18th are what I call the "water section". Great water holes especially the 18th where you tee off from an island tee box out in the lake. A very challenging par 5 where you hit onto the fairway from the side so you have to know how far you can hit to clear the water but not too far to hit through the fairway. I'm from the Albany, NY area and this course is about an hour ride for me but it's my favorite course in upstate NY. Must play it at least once. I play it every year at least once.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 03/17/2017Great public course
Was told that this course sits on an Indian reservation so there is no concern about water and it's shows. I can't say as I have ever played a course that was greener. We had excellent condition and the course was in excellent shape. I'm from upstate NY and if there was a public course like Ak-Chin around here I would join in a heartbeat. I see why it has all the awards. They are well deserved. Nice job on and off the course.
Verrado Golf Club - Victory Course
Played On 03/16/2017Unbelieveable course
First of all, I'm from upstate NY. Used to playing wooded and water courses. Flew into Phoenix just to play golf in March. Played Founders in the morning, finished up at 2:30 ate lunch and decided to try Victory because of the reviews and comments form a couple we were playing Founders with. Started at 4PM. Figured we could get at least 9 in. Conditions were excellent. Clear sky 85 degrees no wind. We were blown away by the course. The first 9 looked like they were rolled out on a desert rocky landscape. It was surreal. We felt like we were in virtual reality game. You couldn't even see the next hole when you were playing because of the desert terrain. There was no GPS but we had a laser gun so the distances weren't a problem. There was no map but there was a path leading between each hole so you knew where you were going. Unbelievable landscape coming from someone who has only played in NY state. I could understand where someone might not like the second nine as there looked like a lot of construction going on around the second nine but we played it at 5pm so it was quiet. WE felt like we hit the perfect storm. Paid $49 for twilight play. Played the first nine in 1 hour and 15 minutes and continued and finished the entire round in 2 and a half hours. The 18th is out of a golf story book. (See picture) Would highly recommend because in a few years this course will be very expensive.
Verrado Golf Club - Founders Course
Played On 03/16/2017Excellent course
From upstate NY. First time in Phoenix. Played Founders because of the ratings and it did not disappoint. Course was challenging and in good shape. Would recommend but if you get a chance try the Victory Course. Worth the experience.
Awesome pics. Going to share on Golf Advisor's Instagram. Do you have a handle?
