Pathetic!!!

This course is known for its bunkers. But not a single one of them has been maintained in what seems like years. It's impossible to play off them. They are going to build houses on the scores next year and so they do not care at all. The pace of play was terrible. No ranger in sight. It's a good thing that they're getting rid of this course. Don't bother...

Blaming the Hot Summer

We played this course this weekend as part of our annual golf getaway. We picked to play this course because we had played it as part of our golf trip two years ago and it was a great experience back then. We were shocked to see how badly this course had deteriorated. And the overall attitude of the staff about the reason the course was in bad shape left a lot to be desired.

First the good stuff - the course layout is interesting and not like most courses. This is not a grip and rip course. One must play the course and pick shots properly. There are lots of hazards and risk-reward decisions to be made. It is very pretty and the pace of play was quite good.

The course was in terrible shape. We had the starter tell us that this was because they had two days in a week where it rained 4 to 5 inches and these two days were interspersed with very hot days. And as a result the "grass was cooked". And that is why the course was the way it was. We reached there and the front office staff were forthright and told us that the course was in bad shape. But, then they told us as if they were doing us a huge favor that they will give us a credit for next year. We will not be coming back next year, and we were more focused on the course condition this year.

The fairways were either wet or there were huge bald patches all over. The rough was non existent in places with hard pans all around the greens. These hard pan areas also extended near hazards making it virtually certain that an errant shot would not be held up in the rough. The greens were beaten up with scuff marks and spike indentations making it clear that it had never been rolled in days. The bunkers were hard and not raked.

They will tell you that the summer was very harsh. However, we played their other course Man O'War the same day, and it was in much better shape. We also played a couple of other courses a few miles away, and they were in fantastic shape. They all experience the same weather. It was sad to see such a nice course deteriorating the way it has.

We are definitely not coming back here...We don't want credits and free rounds. We want a good experience on our golf outings.

The Tale of Two Courses

I played on September 16th, 2017 with a group of golf buddies as part of our annual outing. We were excited to play this course, as it is widely touted to be the best course in Ocean City and one of the top ranked in the country.

We ended up with a strange feeling after playing this course. The first seven holes and holes 17 and 18 are links style and wind-swept and the remaining holes are wooded or parkland style. The links style holes are in great shape - tee box to fairways to greens. However, the rest of the holes are in terrible shape - bald patches all over the fairways and bang in the middle, hard pan areas around the greens making it impossible for an average amateur golfer to chip or pitch, beaten up greens and poorly maintained bunkers.

We did not pay full rates as this part of an overall package. But, I understand that the regular prime time rate is $199 for a round. Its simply baffling how they cannot keep the course in better shape through the season.

Don't be fooled with the standard answers from some of the over rated Ocean City courses this year that it had to do with the unusually hot summer, lots of rains, blah blah blah....We played a couple of other courses in the same area, one of them a public course and they were in fantastic shape. These courses experienced the same weather. And we are expected to believe that the Number 1 course in Ocean City could not keep up with this weather, and that too for 9 holes out of the 18.

Overall the course is challenging, and the layout requires proper club selection and prudent shot making decisions. The wind is a huge factor. Especially the par 5, where we had to go up two clubs to combat the winds from the bay. The views of the links style holes are spectacular thanks to the vegetation and stunning views of the bay.

We will definitely not be going back to play this course.
