Fallen Oak Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2015A golf experience
The only way to play Fallen Oak is to stay at the Beau Rivage Hotel Casino. So, if you are on a budget, then this may not best option as green fee $200+tax is in addition to your room.
What you get is a golf experience, not a round of golf. The course is located about 20 mins from the Casino, so you will need a car/taxi/shuttle. You are treated to a first class experience from the moment you arrive. This is the 2nd place I have been where the Locker room attendant insists on cleaning your shoes prior to the round. Hudson National GC being the other. They made a name plate waiting for me on the locker, and when I got done he even cleaned my shoe bag!
Practice facility is nice, complete with short game area. So you can take your time to warm up.
The course is typical Fazio, room off the tee, lots of doglegs and large greens. From the Tips I found the course forgiving with room for misses. Choosing the correct tees will be important, as the course can be long in spots, and asks a few questions about your iron game. I would recommend moving one tee box up when playing for first time.
Conditions were excellent, but with so few rounds your would expect nothing less. The greens rolled at a good pace for August, and were consistent.
Overall, if you are willing to pay for a golf experience, this is the best option along the Gulf Coast.
Hudson National Golf Club
Played On 06/04/2015One of the Best
Hudson National GC is everything you would expect and want in a Golf Club. It is not a country club, its a golf club. The staff is quick, attentive and treat you like a member. The clubhouse is beautiful and matches the surroundings. The Men's Locker room is one of the best I have seen.
The best part about Hudson National is that it is walking only. NO CARTS! The golf course is a favorite of mine, and so many holes are postcard worthy, it is no wonder that holes like 10 and 16 end up on golf calendars.
It is a tough test, but the caddies will take care of you. Fescue lined fairways and rolling terrain will test the average player. If you claim you like fast greens, well, putt these, and you will know what fast really is. They are pure Bent Grass.
You get invited to play here, you clear your schedule and play at all costs.
TPC Louisiana
Played On 05/31/2015TPC of Louisiana
The home of the Zurich Classic. It is what you would expect from a TPC Course. As someone who has played it lots of times (30+), at various times of year & growing seasons, the best compliment I can give is, consistency. That is a good thing, especially with the small details.
The staff is always friendly and helpful. Practice areas are always clean, in good condition, with practice balls to match. The golf cars are clean and well maintained. The golf operations are what you would expect and demand from this facility based upon the fees.
The golf course may be the best conditioned public course in the area, I haven't played them all or English Turn under new management. The routing is a traditional bow-tie loop. As you would expect from Pete Dye, lots of mind games. This is made the more difficult since the property is flat, and depth perception can be difficult for many.
The Fairways are generous, with a bail-out side. All the areas through the green are kept at a manageable height for Bermuda, so lies are not too tight and the rough is not penal.
The firm greens are the real defense, with many set at angles to the fairway, with lots of collection areas/run off, think "wavy potato chips." There are hazards in play on most holes, so if you tend to spray it, you will lose a ball or two. The final three holes are my only issue with the layout. I think Dye could have used the land better. The 16th has been modified since it opened, and is still a weak hole. The par 3 17th, is too similar to #9 and way too demanding from the back tee, the Zurich doesn't use it. #18 is an interesting par 5, with lots of options and pitfalls. It is really fun to play when the grandstands are up, gives a true "stadium feel."
Overall, if you come to NOLA, and want a quality round, and don't mind a 25-30 minute drive, this is a viable option.
