Good little course with a spectacular setting

Played here with my wife on a trip to the Central Coast. Course was recommended by one of her co workers, and I said let's check it out. I'd lived in Santa Barbara for a few years and played many of the courses in the area, but never Morro Bay. Now I regret not driving the extra bit to play here more often when I had the chance.

Loads of elevation changes here. Most holes play slightly to significantly uphill or downhill. As well, many fairways have some side slope, so lies on approach shots are often a mix of up/down with left/right, which does make for a bit of a challenge. Many of the par 4's struck me as a bit shorter, allowing me to play a 3 or even 5 wood off the tee and still have a wedge into the green. Not much in the way of bunkers, but plenty of trees to avoid if you get off the fairway. Greens were smooth and true, if not too fast. We started out at 7:30, so the greens were still pretty wet and slow and they got faster as they dried out. As I'd consider Torrey Pines one of my 'home' courses, I was possibly better prepared for the way the greens played. Everything slopes towards the bay and/or marsh to the south of the course. Putts that might initially look flat need to be considered in light of the overall slope of the property.

Overall, we really enjoyed it and will definitely come back to play again!

It's all about the greens...

Riverwalk has some of the best greens in San Diego for my money. (Relatively) fast and smooth - putts roll true. Plus, it's conveniently located and since it's coastal, it doesn't suffer from the super summer inland heat. I've always been a fan of the layout - the course isn't too long, but lots of mounding, strategically placed bunkers and water can make it a challenge.

Plus, 4 1/2 hours for 18 on a Sunday in San Diego is moving along pretty quickly, so I can't complain there.

Great facility at a great price.

So, my understanding is that until a year or two ago, this course was military only. Let me say, I'm very happy that it's now open to us civilians who want to go play there.

Classic layout in one of the valleys of the rolling hills of Camp Pendleton. For $35 weekends (walking - it's $50 to ride) it's a bargain. The course is all by itself on the base - one road in and out, not a house to be seen. Nothing but you, the course and the birds. Pace of play was terrific, especially for a 10:00am tee time on a Sunday. Just under 4 hours for the round. The greens were partially aerated, but that's fine - it's a normal springtime thing and they were getting bumpy in spots, so the aeration was needed. Fairways were in good shape, bunkers were very consistent and well placed and the rough, while not always consistent, was, in places, a fair length to penalize you for missing the fairway. Mature trees line the course, but not so many that you're blocked out of a shot on every miss.

Beverages (read: Beer Cart) were CHEAP! (Cheap for a golf course in any case.) Each round of a Miller Lite for my buddy and a Corona for me was only $7. For San Diego, that's a downright bargain. The staff everywhere was terrific and the food from Mulligan's (We had lunch at the Eagle's Landing after the round) was good as well.

Overall, I really liked the course and will definitely be back. Granted, it's a 45 minute drive from my house in Point Loma, but I won't let that stop me from playing here more often.

Fun course.

I've always like Eastlake - but then again, I'm partial to all the Ted Robinson Jr. courses in the area - Eastlake, Riverwalk, Twin Oaks and Rhodes Ranch in Las Vegas.

His courses tend to be a little on the shorter side, which can be nice for someone like me who can't bomb it out there 300 yards. Eastlake is no exception to this, and I might only hit driver 4 times in a round there, preferring to hit a 3w, hybrid or long iron from many holes to avoid trouble or set up a full club approach.

Eastlake does have quite a few bunkers and water hazards that come into play. In addition, there's lots of undulations and mounding used to give you a good variety of lies from which to hit.

The course was in decent, if not great, shape. Fairways were a little burnt out, but the greens were good. Pace of play was a little slow, but that's to be expected on a Saturday midmorning tee time.

All in all, it was a good value and I'll definitely play here again.

Terrific Course to Play

My wife, father in law and I played this course the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. The staff was terrific, the course in great shape and plenty challenging. Lots of sand to be had here! My wife is still pretty new to the game and from the red tees it was challenging but fair for her. I played whites because I was with my father in law who hadn't played in a few years and am glad I wasn't farther back as I didn't hit the ball well. However, the course is fair as long as you pay attention to the very accurate GPS (which is set up to have the exact yardage to the flag, not just the center of the green.) and play smart off the tee. Late November is a pretty awesome time to play Arizona courses - the weather was about 82*, cloudless sky and a slight breeze. Overall I'd say this is a typical Troon golf course - great staff, condition and a challenge. We will definitely return.

Fun course, great value, not really 'links' golf.

I've played Salt Creek numerous times of the past few years and always enjoy a round there. The course is fun with quite a bit of variety in the holes and it's possible to shoot a good score if you keep the ball in play. Greens are generally decently quick and in good condition, pace of play is fast, staff friendly and the practice facilities are good. It was originally opened as the Auld Course and advertised as links golf, but I don't think it's truly links golf, ala Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes...
