Thoroughbred Golf Club at High Point
Played On 06/15/2021Getting better
The course is under new ownership and new management and has improved pretty significantly versus previous seasons. It’s still a fairly short course with a few oddities (no bunkers, tee boxes that are actually back to back with one another, etc), but it’s a fun place to play and provides a good challenge with lots of elevation changes and some tricky water hazard and tree locations.
Woodford Lakes Golf Club
Played On 09/27/2020Great fairways
This course has been steady and reliable this year. My only complaint is that the greens are deteriorating quickly. Fairways and tee boxes are in great shape, some of the best in the area, but the greens are getting bald patches and getting mowed slightly unevenly, which is leading to bouncing putts and putting on dirty. Not great. Fix that and this is an amazing course. There is great value here. There are a couple of spots where I would, to make it even better, add a few fairway bunkers, but that is maybe me being a bit picky. Great local course, though.
Kearney Hill Golf Links
Played On 08/30/2020A good design, ruined by budget
Kearney Hill Golf Links is a beautifully designed course from the late Hall of Fame designer Pete Dye. You can see, when playing the course, many of his trademark design cues. However, over time, the city's ownership of the course has caused them to remove sand from many of his trademark pot bunkers, and the fairways have become incredibly patchy due to poor maintenance. What bunkers remain are still gorgeous and very challenging, the big elevation changes on several holes create some really difficult to judge distances, and the greens are in immaculate condition and can be very difficult depending on pin position. This course suffers from one big issue for fans of Dye's designs, though: Peninsula Golf Resort, just about an hour away, is a far more well-maintained Dye design at a better price point. I would encourage anyone who likes this course to visit out there. I think that you will be happier with the state of their fairways. Kearney's have gotten to the point where they are almost as much dirt as grass. Virtually unplayable on a wet day. Shame, because it's a beautiful setup in a beautiful location.
Gay Brewer Jr. Course at Picadome
Played On 06/07/2020Nothing special
Trees on this course need serious attention. 1 hole had an entire tree that had fallen onto the blue tee box. Had 3 nice drives knocked down by overgrown branches hanging over the fairway. Greens hadn't been watered at all for a long time and were so hard and fast that no amount of backspin mattered because the ball would bounce like the green was the cart path and the grass was cut slightly uneven which made the roll of puts and short chips incredibly unpredictable. It is obvious that the city is holding back on the budget. While, due to COVID closures, most of the courses in the area are immaculate, this one was below expectations.
