First off, I understand Monroe GCC is a membered-owned club. That's the reason given for how they do certain things, but I just wanted to state that I understand that.
Had the first tee time today (because I've read pace of play can be rough behind said members) on a wet, cold Monday morning. I was just happy to be out with the sticks! I was ready to enjoy an early morning walk to keep the blood flowing. Upon checking in, I was strictly told "nope walking is only for members, sir."

I've never heard that one before...

I offered to pay for a cart and walk anyways, but I was met with the same flexibility of a sturdy two-by-fore -- "it's a member-owned club, sorry you can't walk. That's their right."

Okay...I'm not sure this is the best way to win over a new resident in the area, but hey, they can do what they want. They're member-owned. And I'll have to take my ambling elsewhere.

As for the actual course, it was what you'd expect. It's a classic, country layout with surprisingly good conditions for the time of year. Greens were smooth & fast (besides some patches of trouble about 1/3rd of the greens are having). Big-picture wise, trees are overgrown and encroaching on many tee shots not providing many options off the tee (but hey, you gotta execute). It's a fun parkland layout (so not many homes to contend with) with some cool elevation changes.

I understand the tensions of managing public play and tending to your members, but go fully private if you want to only cater to them. See how well that goes. I encourage to foster a different attitude towards visitors and really treat them as guests (and maybe future members!).

PGA Level Layout

I finally made the drive today and got to play nine at the UGA golf course. This might be my new favorite course.

First, it's extremely walking friendly, which is hard to find these days at public courses. I enjoyed a lovely stroll through the parkland course.

Secondly, the layout is a big, challenging stage to test all handicaps. I chose the tips to really test myself, and it provided all the challange I was interested in, but is very playable at any skill level.

Lastly, the conditioning was so good. The bent greens were running at 11.9 on the stimp, and the entire course was firm and fast. The green complexes were very interesting & dramatic.

I can't wait to get back and check out the rest of the course, but this place is already a favorite of mine. I kinda don't want to tell anyone about it :)

Thank you for the great review! We are glad to hear you enjoyed the course so much. You are correct, our course is walking friendly...it is hilly in spots, but you'll never walk very far from green to tee. As you say, definitely a nice stroll in the park. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

What a beautiful course!

First of all, Legacy on Lanier is visually pretty dang intimidating. It makes up for that by not being overly long, but be ready to really commit to your tee balls and approach shots.

It was a nasty, wet day (with cart path only, as expected) in the middle of February, so I wasn't expecting too much conditions-wise. But even so, it wasn't great. With the really interesting mounding and green complexes, it would be a really fun test with firm and fast conditions. I can't wait to come back and check it out in dryer months. Tee boxes were quite bare. I'd be frustrated if I had paid full rate.

Really happy with the complimentary lunch & soft drinks as well as the practice facilities. Like I said, I can't wait to come check it out on a firm and fast day.

Come check it out!

Thank you for your review and course recommendation. Sorry about the weather! The course is pretty good to play all year round but a good tip is to play the weekend following the 680 The Fan Buck & Kincade Classic Golf Tournament which is held on a Friday in June. Come back and see us soon!

Layout is the best part

The course layout is the strength of this course. It really is pretty interesting for a target golf course. Accuracy from the tee is crucial, and playing this for the first time, I would for sure score better the next go round.

My biggest disappointment was the practice facilities and the greens. The range balls are an abomination. DON'T waste your money...I purchased a small and got maybe 7-8 decent balls out of the 50 or so. You're also hitting off of a mat that's in worse shape than your living room's carpet. Just don't waste your money.

The greens are all over the place. Don't get frustrated when you're missing 3-5 footers because they're practically impossible due to the bumpiness. Other than that, the course has a very interesting layout with some beautiful elevation changes.

For the price, I'd recommend it with a Golfnow.com hot deal. I wouldn't pay full price, that's for sure.
