The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Saguaro/Tortolita
Played On 06/13/2022Disappointed
Had long been looking forward to playing this course- and after doing so, never need to see it again. Unmemorable, remote, unkept. It seems once it was likely a better course, but they seem to have mostly let it go, and the layouts were obviously not Jack’s best work. The greens were in good condition, though sometimes almost goofy, especially the Wild Butro 9. Odd, steep undulations that a pro would struggle with & likely never tolerate. Tee boxes looked like they hadn’t gotten much attention in a week. No locker room near pro shop, no water on course nor beverage cart, though they did provide bottled water. The course is located remarkably far from anything. For the money I’d opt for Ventana Canyon in Tucson or Gold Canyon in Apache Junction.

Nothing quite like this one, out in the middle of nowhere & somewhat jammed between houses & desert washes. The tee time/starter is inefficient & appears to take unusual liberties with scheduled tee times. Our confirmed time was tampered with before we even got there, no explanation. Then the new time was not honored because somebody else was running late whom they wanted to fill out the foursome with. Didn’t ask, didn’t inform us, just put another group out in our revised tee time, so we went out over 20’ later. Play lots of golf & no other place pulls that. Similar thing happened last time there- starter seems to have a lot of older friends & seems to stick them in where he feels like it. The course is ok on the front nine- tee boxes & fairways not much better than an ordinary muni. The back nine is something of a maldesign, especially. Holes 11 & 12, amongst others. Lots of forced carries, narrow fairways and odd slopes so that decent drives are sometimes penalized. High handicappers need not even try this course- guys paired with us each must’ve each run through at least a dozen balls & shot 120 or 130. Painful, for $100.00 per. Marshalls harass even though pace decent & not faster because of slow players paired up with. Restaurant is little more than a snack bar. IMO, there are so many better choices around Scottsdale, without the drive, high prices or starter/Marshall nonsense.

Booked same morning via GolfNow Hot Deal that truly was a great price. Summer round midday, paired with another pleasant gentleman and we had the course to ourselves for the first 7 holes, then two groups waved us through, we finished in 2 1/2 hours. Nice design, large fairway landing areas for a desert course, helping us play well and not search for balls in the desert sometimes more common on narrower AZ courses. Bunkers ok. Greens, tee boxes and fairways excellent. Saw the beer cart 4 or 5 times, plenty of water stations. You do get an unusual amount of jet noise from the nearby AFB, though only a minor distraction and not ear shattering at all. Staff very friendly- they did not meet me at the bag drop, so carried in my own bag- but it’s summer and likely minimum staffing. Recommended if you can get it for less than $40 summer/fall and $100 winter/spring.

A few nice holes, otherwise, not a memorable layout. It seems to draw many beginners, slowing play. State residents pay 1/2 of visitor rates. Several fairways misdesigned, with narrow, overgrown trees blocking drives and odd slopes that can ruin even a brilliant drive. It's too easy to hit into the group ahead on several holes. Busy highway next to 3-4 of the fairways. Driving range on site, but $5 gets you a small quantity of old, distance limited balls. Parking lot service at bag drop is non-existent. It's something to play once as a warmup round, perhaps, but don't pay more than $40.

But they started screwing anybody who doesn't happen to have a Hawaiian Drivers License. We spend two months a year here, own two properties and pay a ton of property and sales tax to the great state of Hawaii. But Kahili has decided to charge anybody without permanent residency twice or more the going rate. $39 for residents and $105 for the rest of us leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I'm done with Kahili and its ferocious winds.

This is a nice course that often seems to be priced fairly for the area and season. There are some memorable mountain top and other holes, the condition is good- not perfectly manicured, and tee boxes a bit rough, but overall good and they don't let too much of the grass adjacent to the primary playing areas go dormant- like many courses have gotten carried away with to pinch a few pennies on their water bill. So it is still attractive. The greens are quick, with slope but not much undulation. The sand in the traps is amongst the finest I've ever played- helping to reduce the penalty a bit for landing in one. The practice facility is nice and the staff friendly. Their use of 10 minute increments between tee times should be the industry standard- what a pleasant experience and ideal amount of spacing between the groups.
The course is well into Phoenix, so plan accordingly if coming from Scottsdale or elsewhere. Golfers need to go to the bag drop located at the NW corner of the Pointe Hotel, parking is easy but then need to walk a little ways to the golf shop and check-in, where we found a line of five other golfers paying separately and only one clerk to answer phones and take everybody's money. This is mentioned since when you get on your cart, it is then a good five minute drive to the practice area/1st tee/starter, which itself is spread out a bit, which cut into our practice time. But their use of the 10 minute windows (vs. 8) cuts the stress level and their need to push golfers through like they do on too many other courses. The course itself is very spread out- not walkable at all- but designed well enough with most of the homes along the course set far enough back from the side of the fairways to reduce chances of a home strike from an errant shot. One hole seemed jammed into the layout (#9, just 105 yards from the whites or 115 from the blues)- but use more club, something of a little wind tunnel up by that green. Nice remote snack shop at the turn and good cart service seen twice in the round. I recommend playing Lookout Mountain.
Thank you for your feedback. Lookout Mountain is definitely a unique layout. We strive to give all of our guests an optimal experience and we hope to see you and your friends again soon.

Great course, few courses in the Phoenix area, or the country for that matter can rival the elevation changes. A few holes were obviously wedged into the canyon/home layout designs, but overall its very good. Condition is excellent.
I have a problem though with its cost structure- its green fees are inflated. It seems to attract mostly novice tourists who cannot stay on the fairways and are limping along looking for their $4 Pro V1s in the desert. It's too hard for them. This seems to have lead to locals abandoning it for better courses nearby, either for layout, pace of play or ambiance, and for lower cost. Worse, it seems fairly obvious that the course is struggling- and perhaps not well managed- they seem to have the unfriendliest staff, especially in the pro shop. I don't get it. And the Marshals keep coming around to push you along, even if it isn't that busy. We got paired with tourists who would tee off three times until they could hit one straight, we're playing the same ball. Not our fault, and distracting. I'm not going to reprimand or babysit the tourists with too much money who don't know how to play golf. As such, this one is off my list.

Played On 12/26/2015Very Nice
A nice little course that you will enjoy if you don't mind driving a ways from most places to get to it. It has a Mesa address but really is on the edge of civilization in the Phoenix valley to the Southeast. Otherwise not much that you won't like- it is difficult and not for beginning or occasional golfers.
The course is in great condition, the facility seems unusually well managed and maintained. The driving range is superb, as is the course conditioning. The layout was well designed. Several of the holes are scenic and quite memorable, with some elevation changes within. Homes are a bit close to fairways in spots and errant shots can cause damage. Greens are quick with undulations and slope on nearly every one of them. Par 5s tend to be difficult to reach in 2 from the blue tees and behind (there are multiple tees to select from), even by power hitters. Several of the par 3s can be unusually challenging as well.
My only complaint was this last round I went out as a single- and was paired with 3 others, one of which had his own private cart since he lived near the course. The starter took my cart and had me ride in his- which was filled with personal items on both sides and in the basket. It was slightly distracting and awkward for both of us, especially when some of the toppings from my hot dog fell onto his cloth seats. So just be warned, if they try to do this to you, I'd suggest that you politely decline. And try not to go when its windy- the wind can get really strong and dramatically affect play since it is near the foothills.
The course is trying to build enough private membership to go private, but from what I hear, they've been trying for years now and are unlikely to succeed at it.
Aloha Vrob2. We are sorry to hear about your displeasure with our Kama’aina policy. Our policy reflects that of many Kama’aina rate requirements (whereby we require either a HI Driver’s License or government issued HI State ID). We have however rolled out a number of rate programs that provide tremendous value for our “Malihini” friends without a Hawaii ID. For example we are dynamically pricing rates on KahiliGolf.com (or you can call us at 808.242.4653). Our best available rates on our website for Malihini/Visitors actually vary based upon demand. Searches this month revealed rates ranging from $69-$95 depending on the day of the week and time of day. Additionally we now have a Malihini “Ali’i Card” you can purchase with offers as low as $25 (9 holes after 3pm) to $85 (May 1- Sept 30 prior to 11am). Check out KahiliGolf.com for details on our Best Available rates and new Ali’i Card. We hope this info is helpful. We would love to see you back at Kahili again soon! Mahalo
