Good course

Pace of play was great and the course is in great shape. The price was pretty high at 89. Maybe that's why pace is good? The greens were in good shape, but there's not a flat putt on the whole course! Everything is uphill, downhill, or breaking left or right. I don't really mind this, but it felt like the speeds aren't consistent from green to green. Everyone in the group noticed this and commented on it. The rough was pretty brutal. Finding fairways is a must to play well here. There's also a lot of undulation from hole to hole. Even in the fairways, you're faced with a lot of uphill, downhill lies, ball below or above your feet. It was definitely challenging. I'm honestly conflicted on whether I'd come back for not. But because of the staff and the condition of the course, I'd probably recommend it.

Course needs work

The course is in rough shape. Only about three greens were worthy of being called greens. The rest are pretty chewed up. They recently aerated, so at least they're trying, but they have a long ways to go. Besides that, we got stuck behind a group of five, yes five, on a Saturday. Three were walkers, all were hackers. We waited a lot. The staff inside the clubhouse were very kind, but they needed a marshall to push things along....and in no way should they allowed a group of five to go out together.

Different

This was a different type of course for the northern VA area. Courses in the region generally have a lot of slope to them and are wood-lined to where if you're offline just a bit, you're out of bounds. This course was quite the opposite. I found the course very flat (not in a bad way). I think the slope was 121. And while the holes are tree-lined, you'd have to be pretty far offline to lose a ball. There's still a requirement for accuracy off the tee to score because even though you'll find your ball in the trees, you'll usually have to punch out. Approach shots were usually into slightly elevated and relatively smallish greens. Greens don't have a ton of challenging undulation to them. Speed control was the difficult part for my group. On such a hot day, most course's greens are very fast. These greens were in perfect shape, but the ball just doesn't roll out like you think. A couple more rounds and I think I'd figure it out. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in perfect shape. The rough is thick, but playable, if you can find your ball. I'll definitely come out here a few more times. We had a great time.

Very nice

Played the course on New Years eve. Tee time was 11:06. I got there an hour early. Check-in was fast and easy and everyone was following COVID protocols. Took the cart to the practice area which is like a half mile away. They had endless practice balls which were of good quality (for practice balls). I hit off a mat, but it wasn't bad all. No pain and it reacted true to turf. The range has flags at different distances so you can get dialed in. I tee my ball for driver fairly low and I couldn't get my tee in low enough for realistic practice. Not a huge deal. Then I practiced putting and chipping on the practice green. It was a little chewed up but I was able to get speed dialed in since I wasn't familiar at all with the course. I was paired with three other people and they were all great playing partners. As for the course, it's a Nicklaus signature course and it was noticeable. Absolutely beautiful course. Fairways were on the wider side (which I love lol) and the rough was cut to a manageable length. I've been playing a lot in the local area and most courses are soaked right now. While still wet, this course had the best irrigation in the area. The greens were in great shape. The shapes and some sizes of the greens offered a challenge. It's a course designed to make you pick your spots. The holes narrowed from the fairways into the greens. Bail out areas were small so you really had to hit a good shot to score well. I personally never had an issue on the green where I was in a place that was chewed up. The ball rolled true. There are some truly picturesque holes. Nicklaus doesn't just challenge you on your approach. There were plenty of fairway bunkers to make you place your tee shot correctly. I hit every club in my bag, sometimes choosing less than driver off the tee and had every length of approach shot into the greens. I enjoyed the challenge of plotting my way around the course and having decide when to be aggressive and when to play for par. I shot my best ever round at +6 (78) for a heck of a way to end this wild year. I will absolutely come to this course more often. While the price is definitely a little higher than surrounding courses, it's worth it due to the way they maintain the course and the experience you'll have. A couple things to note. You can't walk this course. On several occasions, it's probably a half mile to the next hole through hilly woods. I love walking and wasn't fond of the idea of riding, but it's definitely the only way to go here. Also, You don't circle back to the club house until you finish 16. We never saw a cart with refreshments. Come prepared. Finally, it apparently is a course that's infamous for being cart path only. I understand when it's wet so it didn't bother me. I'd feel different if the course was dry. But also with it being cart path only, it will add to your time. We saw the marshall no less than four times though, so they're keeping an eye on pace of play. We never had an issue in that respect. Anyways, give it a shot. I'm certain you'll enjoy it. I'll definitely be back!

Good experience

First time playing the course and showed up 8 minutes prior to tee time thanks to a crash on 95. Staff and starter were all very friendly and helpful. I ended up getting paired with three other singles since the course was packed on a beautiful fall Saturday. The course is somewhat short, but requires a touch of accuracy off the tee thanks to water and woods outlining most holes. This is more of a course management course, rather than a bomb it and go course. There were many dog legs, but less elevation changes than many courses in this area. Luckily, one of the guys I got paired with was a member so he helped give some hints off the tees. The course was in fantastic shape. The greens were tip top and the fairways have a nice lush semi-dormant Bermuda. The only thing that knocked it down a star for me was the pace. There were some seriously slow groups out there and nobody pushing them along. I get it, it's probably the last nice Saturday in a while and there are a ton of new golfers thanks to the pandemic. I'd like to go back and walk this course on a weekday just to see how it plays then. I'll be back to this course for sure.

Freezing Thanksgiving round

It was 29 degrees today with a wind chill of 17. It was brutally cold, but I knew the course would be wide open since it's Thanksgiving so I decided to give it a go. The staff was great and got me out quickly with no issues. There was a foursome who just teed off and weren't even off the tee box yet.. Rather than letting me play through, they proceeded to hack up the place, so I went around them. On a normal day, I would expect a marshall to push me through. No biggie today. The course was in great shape. The greens were immaculate. The layout forces you to make good choices off the tee or be punished. There are various hazards and obstacles to contend with, which I appreciated. Some of the greens have tremendous undulation and a few of the pin placements were a little ridiculous. All in all, I enjoyed the course. I do wish they'd repaint the yardage markers on the cart path and have a few more markers throughout the fairway. The cold weather killed my range finder's battery so I was left guessing a lot. I'd come back and play again for sure though.

Wow - you survived those temperatures! Thank you for the review and your comments. We will be repainting the cart paths with yardages in the spring. Hopefully the next time you come to play it'll be a little warmer!!

Nice track

I played this course at 7:52 on Sunday morning. It was a hot day and the tons of rain we've had only slightly affected play. I was paired up with some guys who wanted to play from the gold tees, which I usually wouldn't have played by myself. Regardless, I put together a nice round. I found myself thinking a lot on this course. You have to play course management or you can really get into trouble. I only pulled driver five times off the tee. Bunkers are strategically placed in the fairway and around the greens so you have to be aware of your safe misses. We didn't know it, but it turned out to be the club championship that morning, so the pins were TOUGH. Most were tucked away in a far corner or on a ridge, making it quite challenging. I'd like to see their normal pin placements. The fairway is zoysia which kept the ball propped up like it was on a tee. It was joy to hit from, both on full shots and chips and pitches. The greens were very fast. They were a little burnt up in places, but it never affected roll. Overall, it's a beautiful course in great condition and I'll definitely be back.
