Drunks Ruining The Course

A buddy and I played yesterday behind what must have been a Saturday morning league, and they were obnoxious. Screaming, hollering, acting like drunken frat boys. The greens were trashed with foot-scuffs and un-touched ball marks. There’s excessive cart wear all over the course, crushed beer cans on the tee-boxes and the woods are littered with booze bottles, beer cans and garbage. Like too many local courses, the slobs that play there are ruining what is otherwise, a beautiful, challenging, well-kept course. We gotta do something about the party-boy leagues though... It’s ridiculous.

Sad, Really

Knowing that the rainy weather has been rough on courses, this track was possibly the worst-drained one I’ve ever seen. The greens were in decent shape (though oddly squishy?). Hole 17, with elevation well above ponds nearby, was almost entirely saturated in the landing zone from the tee, making it entirely un-playable. It wasn’t raining when we played, but the course was empty on a Sunday afternoon, the staff was barely there; we asked to have the grill switched back on for an hotdog at the turn. The place seems to be decaying and neglected, and it’s sad, as this older course has a bit of charm.

We finished our round and wanted to take a few swings on the practice range (using the token I purchased earlier with my fees). As we approached the range, an employee told us we had to leave because he was leaving and was supposed to lock the gate when he did. It was 7:00 pm. The course’s published closing time is 9:00. I’ve never been asked to leave a business because the 20-something staff decided they didn’t want to work any longer... until yesterday.

It will be a shame to see this charming little course go away and become another tract of plastic houses, but, they seem to be doing it to themselves. I won’t be back.

Needs Management Who Cares

I remember when this course was new and thought it would mature nicely into a pleasing course. As time has passed, it’s less “matured” than “decayed”. The sand bunkers are almost all grown in, the signage is low-dollar in the first place and mostly broken or aged. Paths are un-drivable and everything seems as if its forgotten. At one par-3 my play was stopped by what I assume was an owner, slowly driving and parking her cart between myself on the tee and the green... for unknown reason and zero acknowledgement that I was there. I found the older lady in the clubhouse who checked me in to be curt, unfriendly and almost bothered that I was there. Aside from these critiques, the fairways and greens were reasonably well-maintained, although the wear to the turf from carts and maintenance equipment is extensive.

Play here if you get a $12 midday deal or if everywhere else is busy, but avoid it if you enjoy a maintained golf course and pleasant people. (with the exception of the one friendly woman who was operating the bar counter in the clubhouse, her engaging personality was a pleasant delight to the day)
