About

Slightly above average lady golfer but would be considered a
short hitter. I try to make up for this with a decent short game.
I get down on myself for poor play but try to let go of bad shots.
I enjoy being on the practice range but disappointed I've never
had the breakthrough to lower my handicap as much as I'd like.
Am heartened that ladies tees now more reflect our capabilities and distance off the tee. From what I see playing public courses
the men would do well to "play it more forward" as well!

Length an issue for women golfers

Some of the par threes and fours are too long for the average woman golfer. The men are now being rewarded with senior men's tees. Women don't have as much choice of tees. Our tees are five yards in front of the senior mens. We age as well! Many times good shots are not rewarded because of hazard placement and lengthy holes. Fine line between frustration and challenge. Courses need tees set at 5000 yards or just under for our handicaps to be comparable to those of the men. But I have no issue with the course condition or the great patio dining.

Not Woman Friendly

Same old story here. Beddoe is too long for the average woman golfer. Carries to some of the fairways are too long. Par four on some holes were over 340 yards and one par three is 176 yards. You shouldn't have to take a driver on a park three. Not a fun course for the ladies and not conducive to keeping women in the game. For most, the third shot in is still too long. Although the slope/rating for omen reflects. that this is a challenging course, that doesn't make it fun. It's also not evident where to take take carts in some cases. Most courses have smartened up when it comes to yardages for women. Chedoke never has. To get the same enjoyment out of the game that the men do here, course needs to be 4800 to 5000 yards. Even the guys I played with couldn't handle their tees. Want to speed up the game? Make it more average player friendly. Sometimes there's a fine line between a challenge and just plain frustration. Nice to see ball washers and benches back though and the ball going to the bottom of the cup.

Needs some rain

Tee blocks provide a fair challenge for different
skill sets. On this particular day, lots of brown areas esp
the rough. Greens fine. Just need some rain to come
through soon. Can't argue with lots of roll! Pace of play
was a bit slow due to some "coaching" up ahead.
Marshall came through late in the round.
Restaurant amenities great and all Covid rules in effect.
Two nice patios for outdoor dining.

Very challenging but some holes not well laid out for women golfers

Yardage from forward tees reads as if very fair for women golfers but #10 has two difficult forced
carrries. It's one thing to be challenging, it's another to be downright discouraging. Granted designers must deal with the land they have to deal with I guess. Another hole does not reward a good drive - you have to lay up tot the carry. A wasted shot. The difficulty of the course makes for a lot of lost balls so pace of play can be a problem with people searching too long. I always come back to this course but only after about a two year break from it! Covid handling was well done except for having to lug one's clubs through the pro shop instead of being able to drive a cart to the bag drop.

Would definitely come back!

Felt totally safe as far as adhering to rules for Covid.
First course where mask required in clubhouse which was great to see. Masks provided if you didn't have one.
All staff wearing masks, inside and out.
Yardage just right for women golfers. Just challenging enough and a nice walk. Staff very friendly and accommodating.. Wished I lived closer to the Course! so I could play it more often.

Yardage just right from the forward tees now!

Before, the newer red forward tees were initiated, I felt Southbrook played too long for the average woman golfer. Now it's just right and still a challenge. The slope and rating are fair as well. The Covid precautions were well done, especially the innovation for retrieving the ball from the hole without touching the flagstick. Tee times were well spaced out. Carts had dividers if two rode together but also ample carts for single riders. Proper spacing was provided in the clubhouse. After round food was delicious on the patio which had just opened for dining with proper spacing. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly.

Too long for the ladies!

Both City courses are too long for the average lady player. They have placed new orange tees on the Martin Course but I don't know if they are rated and I only saw them on the front nine. The regular ladies' tees are hard work for enjoying one's round if you only hit your tee shot an average of 140 yards. I guess we have to be better chippers and putters than the guys!
There is almost a 1000 yard difference between the front and back nines! Granted, par for ladies is 39 on the front. Yes, this Course is certainly mean't to be a challenge but I wouldn't recommend it to the average lady golfer who would have more fun (like the guys) playing a Course around 5000 yards.

Course was in disappointing shape

Hard bare spots on teeing ground, bare spots in fairways surprising for the amount of rain we've had in these parts. Also , from the red tees, some hazards are just where the average lady drives her ball. Some par threes require a driver for a lady golfer. Not quire ready yet for those further forward red tees, but a happy medium would do! Greens were bumpy.
I expected course to be in better condition for this time of season.

Challenging and Fair!

Great course for all level of player. Longer hitters will be challenged by clubbing down and using strategy to get around this track. The woman friendly forward tees still provide a good challenge with fair landing areas and location of hazards. If not busy, you can play in well under four hours. It's a hidden gem!

Too long for the ladies!

At 5500 yards from the forward tees, this course is a challenge for the average woman golfer. If the course is wet, there is no roll which is much needed at this yardage. The first hole is the most forgiving as it plays downhill and is a shortish par five for women.
Conversely, #13 reads on the card as a long par four at 367 yards but it plays like a par five for the ladies.
Even if with a 170 yard drive, you next have a long forced carry which causes most to have to lay up to the chasm and waste a stroke. Either move the tees up 15 yards or make it a par five. Golf needs to be encouraging as well as challenging. A couple of the par threes are also too long ie #17 at 157 yards. That's a driver for me! I didn't see one other woman out there playing wither. It's a beautiful course with large undulating greens and interesting topography. But it needs another set of forward tees. The men have three different choices so why do the women or shorter hitters have only one choice of tees? I can only do well here with fast, firm fairways and no wind!

Conditions should be better later n the season.

It's too early in the season to fairly review this Course but there's a lot of potential here. All fairways were like playing out of the rough as they had not been cut.
Greens were slow - again not manicured yet. The pace was to slow as pro shop let a fivesome out which held things up. I would come back later in teh season to have a go at this Course again. When all three nines are open, pace should be better as long as conventional groups are on the Course i.e. no fivesomes!

Finally a course that knows how to set up the tees!

Really enjoyed my round of golf here. There are tee blocks for every type of handicapper and most courses would do well to set up tee blocks this way.
This Course has even subscribed to the "play it forward" theory with green tees well in front of the forward tees. You can have fun here and still have a challenge. Strategy definitely comes into play from every set of tees. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the cart person comes by often.as do the marshals. Pro shop is nicely stocked as well. All aspects of my experience were great. the only thing is that the Course doesn't seem to be a member of Golf Ontario so even though there are ratings on the scorecard, you can't put your score in officially. That's the only downside.
You will have a great golfing experience here!

Good value on a hot deal but needs "real" ladies' tees

Enjoyed a quick-paced round on this city-owned course. Pro shop had me paired up but starter said my group had already gone when I had made it a point to be early. Waited around for a bit and decided to play on my own knowing I would catch up to a group before long. This occurred after 7 holes when I joined two amenable gentlemen.
The Beddoe Course is overly long for the average lady plus some tee areas are not level. Modern philosophy is "play it forward", so courses need to do more to encourage ladies to stay in the game. Par fours of 343, 353 and 364 yards are too long! Same with par threes of 190 and 176 yards.
This goes totally against Alice Dye's theory of course length for the average lady. Many current yardages are like making every guy play from the tips and I've seen the result of that! So get with the programme, Chedoke! Maybe with "roll", you can get away with these yardages but that doesn't happen much anymore.

Interesting elevation changes with diabolical bounces!

This course is very "tight" - you might hit a decent tee shot only to get a bad bounce out of sight - especially as the fairways were hard and fast with bare spots. You have to be in great shape to walk this course! There are also many "blind" areas from off the tee so you need to make sure people ahead are out of range. On the day we played, we made the turn from the back nine to the front only to find
a scramble was going off the first tee in front of us.
Those making the turn should have right of way but the starter had us wait all the groups out, thus our round was almost five hours long.
Another example of courses trying to get as many golfers on the course as possible. The food in the clubhouse and service was excellent, notwithstanding the very foul language of some obvious regulars watching the World Cup on T.V. My ears can handle much worse but there where children around. (Are you listening - management?) I guess this is why guys have grill rooms to themselves!

Course in great shape for the winter we endured!

Hidden Lake (New) is in very decent shape considering the lengthy frost we had in these parts this winter. It will progress every week esp the greens. Good that a marshall was in evidence to keep things moving although four and a half hours seems to be par for the course in public golf.
Not sure how this course will do as a Clublink
acquisition because Clublink will do what it does-
block off tee times and jack up the prices. Pro Shop items are very nice and very pricey. I think Hidden Lake will lose some members over this change. But perhaps it will attract others.
For the money, it's not that interesting a golf course.

Course in best shap of those in the area!

With the winter we've had, this course weathered well and was a most enjoyable experience.
The elevation changes are challenging and fun.
For the average lady, number eight is NOT fun.
I hit a great drive down the center but had to waste a shot to lay up to the ravine/gorge.
Our round took five hours - too long for my money so marshals need to get people to pick up and move along if behind. I've been playing for a long time and if "golf" wants to keep more in the game, then it can't take as long to play.
I would definitely come back and maybe someday, I'll have number eight figured out!

Spectacular scenery and elevations

Would like to play this course in warmer, calmer weather as we had to pack it in after nine holes due to the cold and wind.
Although not long from forward tees, each hole has its challenges. Cart path rule gave us our exercise just getting to our balls. This was only in effect due to the soggy conditions. The staff were super friendly and there were some great deals in the pro shop which I definitely took advantage of. We got a rain check for the cart for nine holes which was nice. I will definitely go back again. The greens were running true and were tricky due to their sloping nature. Unless you are in great shape, this course requires a cart!

A pleasant surprise from what I expected!

I haven't played this course is a few years so was pleasantly
surprised by the wonderful ambiance, clubhouse and course conditions. It has taken on a whole new look and for the better.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, the greens ran true and signs on the course made it easy to get to the next hole. This is now a class operation. I do however question some longish par fours for the ladies unless the card is incorrect. Anything over
385 yards is a par five for a lady in my book!
The pro shop is nicely stocked and the restaurant has a great menu. I will definitely go back and play it on a warmer, less windy day. The price is right to become a member too!

Was disappointed in this course considering it is supposed to be part of Golf North.

Pro shop staff cordial enough but I had to figure out for myself where to get a cart and which was hole number one as they had changed this from the last time I played. This was all caused by the absence of the starter and all waiting to tee off were left to their own devices. I asked to join a couple who happened to be members which turned out great. The staff seemed more concerned with catering to the tournament that was out there that day. The behaviour of some of the young entrants was questionable as well - more concerned with getting sloshed than playing golf. I hope they all had "d.d.'s". The members told me there had been trouble before with
people falling down drunk and being abusive. Is the Course that desperate for green fees? After the round, I was kept waiting by the young lady more interested in pouring "shots" for the tournament people than serving me. Then I was told that I couldn't order anything to eat as the kitchen was closed and only catering to the tournament. I think the course should just have taken care of the tournament that day and not green fee players. Do it right or not at all! If this is the way Golf North operates, I'm not interested in going back to this Course.
The only positive out of this day was finding lots of golf balls in the creeks due to the tournament ahead and playing with some nice people.
The greens were slow and marked up.

Great course but greens need some work.

I would like another crack at this course with a more decent
pace of play as a 5 hour plus round is not acceptable. It's not
ready-golf that's the problem, it's golfers taking extra shots and spending too much time looking for balls. I't's also guys playing tees they are not capable of playing. On this particular day, one fellow in our group wanted to play from the "tips" even though the two back sets of tee blocks had been removed. He struggled until he agreed to move up a set of blocks. Although the marshals are super friendly, they don't do much about pace of play. This probably is not their fault but perhaps falls to the ones running the course. The greens were pretty inconsistent as well that day. I will definitely try this course again and hopefully can get into a better rhythm with a more decent place of play. People need to fix their ball marks as well as these scars in the green take a long time to heal.
Public players should not be exempt from doing this!
