Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club
Played On 04/08/2024Beware "specials"
I played on an "Eclipse Special." 80 dollars after noon on eclipse day, with a pair of eclipse sunglasses thrown in. Nice course, but not really worth full price. I should have known: they had just punched the greens. Hey....at least I didn't pay full price for dressed greens. Just would have liked to have known.
On the bright side, the staff is great, the venue is gorgeous, and the course is classic....just solid. Not gimmicky, not too hard, but not easy either. Just right! Aside from the greens, the course was in fine early spring shape.
Cutalong at Lake Anna
Played On 10/26/2023Outstanding
Great staff...had the place to myself. Great layout, perfect conditions. Everyone was great.....great golf course.
Course was tough....they were basically bragging that the greens were running at 13. That was unnecessary....the greens have a lot of contours, and the course itself is tough.....fast greens were overkill!
The first time you play this course, don't play it alone.....lots of blind tee shots, best to have a guide!
Greens are insanely fast.
Don't miss this course......SOOOOO nice.
Atlantic Country Club
Played On 08/09/2023Poor man's Pinehills, and that's a compliment!
Hidden gem for sure. Pinehills is wonderful, two good golf courses and excellent amenities for a great experience.
But.....it's very expensive and hard to get a tee time. Atlantic is the answer. Outstanding experience: the course is every bit as challenging and fun to play. Not crowded, laid back.
As a public course, though.....people don't fix their ball marks. I fixed three on every green. None of the water stations had water.
Aside from that.....conditions very good, course a challenge and beautiful visually. Save some bucks, skip Pinehills and play here.
The Brookside Club
Played On 07/31/2023Fun course
First time playing here.....this is a fun course to play: some very tricky holes, but NOT too long, so you can pick your targets without the necessity of 300 yard tee shots.
Lots of trouble to get into if you don't know your way around.
Condition great and staff was nice. I will play here again.
Sullivan County Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/21/2023If you LOVE golf!
The course this year is run by newbie Tom Coyne….I highly recommend his books, they are a riot!
He is managing this little muni and changing the culture…..a stunningly beautiful venue in the Catskills into a pure golf experience.
The course is in great shape, unique and hilly with small true greens. The gentleman in the pro shop was an extremely friendly character, proud of what is happening at this gem.
One word of warning…Tom will most certainly write about his experience…..so be on your best behavior! If you are a character worthy of a chapter, put this on your list!

I play here once a year...as if golf isn't humbling enough. This is a course like no other; BORDERLINE gimmicky........you'll want to paint your face like William Wallace before teeing off.
This course is a true gem, incredible design, and aside from some damage on a few fairways, is in very good condition.
Ridiculously hard, ridiculously penal.....and a ton of fun.
Nice staff, and had the course to myself on July 4.
Pendleton Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2020I will not play here again
Super nice course.....unique layout, good conditions in this hot summer. I will not play here again. This has only to do with the staff. Golf is struggling now, and there are too many nice places to play.....you need to compete for my golf dollar. The gentleman in the pro shop had no clue that this is a BUSINESS.....and golfers are the CUSTOMERS....not an inconvenience. The same for the two people working at the small window that sells food. Too bad.....this location is too remote to thrive unless they give great customer service. I suspect the people who work here just volunteer for free golf......but they had no respect for the paying customer.
Mattaponi Springs Golf Club
Played On 02/23/2020Are you kidding me?
I don't know what the story is with this course, I'm pretty sure there is one.....but because of its location, it's a very well kept secret. Amazing golf course, stunning terrain, total silence in this remote area. Winter conditions superb; yes, the fairways and rough are brown (but no leaves, all cleared away)_, but in perfect condition and greens are pristine. Just two staffmembers on site to handle the whole operation on a beautiful sunday.....do not miss this course.
Southers Marsh Golf Club
Played On 08/22/2019Beautiful
This is just an executive course.......an awful lot of par 3's. Having said that, the course should not be missed because ti's just unique.....because the holes run around bogs, it's just a beautiful setting.
Course in great shape, staff friendly and the bar is nice with a great deck.

Played On 05/31/2019Grant me a one time six star?
I played and reviewed this course in the past. If you don't know, it closed and was renovated.
Bottom line, this place is truly unique. If you've never heard of this course, or if you are from out of the area, do NOT miss this course. It's once in a lifetime experience. An unknown bucket list course. Every bit as challenging as a course you'd see on any major.
The price was a tad high....95 dollars at noon on friday.....but.....I literally did not see ONE other golfer on the course. Framed another way...I rented one of the great courses in the USA for the day for only 95 bucks. It was a three hour round. Incredible design...amazing greens (meaning undulating, two or three tiers, fast champion bermuda)........please spread the word......I wouldn't want this course as a home course, it's too tough.....but if you ever wanted to participate in a golf version of a Braveheart battle scene......play this course.

This private club participates in the Open Rounds program for other club members. I was in Boca for work and signed up for a round. Great staff, great course, great golf experience. If I win the lottery, I'm retiring here.
Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club
Played On 03/21/2018Really fun layout
First of all, the bad news. The course is not in "television" shape....but OK....the tee boxes are fine but not perfect, and the same can be said for the greens. Some greens are fast, some are slow....but they roll true.
The good news....really a nice and fun layout. I played the Norman course at the resort in Leesburg, VA, and was not really impressed. This layout was much more interesting and fun to play. Staff was great!
Williamsburg National Golf Club - Yorktown Course
Played On 08/26/2017Five star, but not yet
The problems of this course are well documented. I played the Yorktown course today and I have to say, I was very impressed! Yes, the greens, many of them, are abysmal. But....the layout is fantastic, the scenery beautiful, the staff was nice (except for maybe the bartender......not friendly and seemed to resent being busy, although she wasn't).
If you are visiting the area on vacation, don't play here until October or so (although the Jamestown course is opening on 9/7/17)..... there are simply too many great courses in the area, no need to play on lousy greens). But.....if you can handle the greens for a few months.....I played on a Saturday in just over three hours and very much enjoyed myself....
Niceguyeddy thank you first for coming out to play Williamsburg National and second for taking the time to write a review. A very good assessment of where we are. New ownership and management has been at the property for about 10 months. We have made a lot of progress but still some ways to go. The Jamestown course will open September 7th with new champion Bermuda greens and the Yorktown course is now in the process of being aerified and reseeded. We expect the thin and bare areas of the Yorktown greens to be healed by late September. This is the first negative comment we have received in regards to service we have a great team and we will address this right away. We hope to see you at Williamsburg National again soon and thank you again for your review.

This course is a must play.....but go out and enjoy the scenery and appreciate the difficulty of the course.....I scored poorly, but really enjoyed myself, which is a nice experience. I actually played well, but the wind was blowing 30 mph and the course itself is a brute. We do enjoy great variety in the area, and this course is very unique.
Marion Golf Club
Played On 09/01/2016Not Riviera's Cousin
Same designer as Riviera......to call this place a cow pasture is an insult to cow pastures.......BUT.....it's still a good place to play!! Old school! Fairways barely distinguishable, but greens are in great shape. Lovely views. I didn't know how to answer "staff friendliness"....because there was no staff! Had an honor system with a sign on the door.....15 bucks for nine holes...just put it in the box.......had the place to myself. OK, so it's not Pinehurst......but it's every bit as memorable!!!
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 07/29/2016Despite drought
A bit of a drought has made course maintenance difficult, but the greens and fairways were in very good shape.
A hot deal on golfnow, this was well worth it! It's not Baltusrol or Winged Foot, but a great course that you can actually play......
Sycamore Creek Golf Course
Played On 07/29/2015Putting on pudding
This course has GREAT potential. Nice layout...some challenging narrow fairways, nice elevation changes, strategically placed (but not unfair) bunkers. Most definitely a nice course.
On the downside.....they need some marshals out to speed play up. The course is VERY cheap, an EXCELLENT value, so it attracts some "low time golfers". This is evidenced by the fact that apparently, no one repairs a ball mark. The course is well maintained, but if you play, do us all a favor, and repair two ballmarks including your own....
Will definitely play again.....the value is great, the people are nice, and the course if fun.
Mahogany Run Golf Course
Played On 05/02/2015For the experience
Only course on St. Thomas. I brought my clubs with me because I knew I was going to play.....I"m glad I did, but if I was going back to St. Thomas, I might not bother with the clubs; they have nice rentals.
If I was going with friends to play a lot of golf, then bring them. This is not a GREAT course, but a good course, and interesting. You won't need the driver much, as the course is not long, and accuracy MUCH more important.
Scenery great, course in good condition. Fairways hard, keep that in mind on the doglegs, use less club all the ball will bound through the fairway!
Every hole has a gallery of iguanas watching you. I had the place to myself; less than four hours to play as a single. I caught one foursome and they let me through on the tenth hole.
Friendly staff......glad I played!
Colonial Heritage Club
Played On 03/08/2015If you like variety
I titled this review "If you like variety" because this course stands out....I normally play several courses around Richmond because I like a different experience that each course brings.
This course was good for this!
Conditions were better than I expected (courses have been closed due to snow, and this was "opening day" since the snowstorm). It was wet, but the greens were in good condition. Lots of soggy fairways, so you were able to take a few "standing water" drops. They paired me with a group of low handicappers who usually played all the local courses...they told me "this is our favorite...it's usually in GREAT condition.......and because this area is the highest point in W'burg, the wind presents an extra challenge."
Staff was friendly......
Interesting that this course is in an over 55 community....there are some pretty intimidating forced carries that I won't enjoy when I'm in my seventies!
I don't think you could walk this course......some holes had some long rides between.....but it would be a fun walking course if time was no issue.....lots of elevation changes, beautiful scenery.
Hunting Hawk Golf Club
Played On 12/14/2014Solid
First time playing this course. Although it's mostly flat, there are some very good quality holes. The tenth, 11th and 16th struck me as very good golf holes. I had been told that this course gets so many events/scrambles, that it gets beat up (no one fixes their ball marks, for example). I was on the lookout for this, but although I could see evidence of heavy play, the greens were true. The fairways and tees were in good shape also.
Due to frost, the course opening was delayed, so I teed off about a half hour after my tee time. Understandable; starter was friendly and helpful.
Hope this course survives! It is a fun course to play.
Thank you for the review, and for the 5 stars! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your round and the over all value of your round. We look forward to having you back.
