Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
Played On 09/20/2018Hilton Head Golf - Old School Style
A beautiful, 1960s-era course with some ample fairways but also some tight ones, with plenty of hazards if you don’t hit it straight. It’s only 6500 yards from the tips, and it’s a fun 6500. Mostly smaller greens means you’d better have your iron game ready. The greens were very smooth, but a little - not a lot - slower than Palmetto Hall. They roll true and give you a chance to bang it into the back of the cup. Fun course and a great value.
Robert Cupp at Palmetto Hall Plantation

I’ve played 10-12 Hilton Head courses over the years. I love playing a course for the first time, and Palmetto Hall’s Robert Cupp course did not disappoint. The greens are, well, different. Some are huge, others tiny, and there are some interesting shapes (rectangular, long and skinny) and undulations. Not a lot of greenside bunkers. I played the blue tees, which are 6500 yards. Between the breezes and being at sea level, it played longer than its yardage. The Cupp course is not particularly scenic until the end - where 15 through 18 are beautiful, classic Hilton Head holes that stack up some of the best on the island.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Barony's layout! It's definitely a fun course with a little challenge to it. Hope your travels are well and we'll see you on a future trip to HHI!
Best,
Ben
