Good course, recovery conditions

Haven’t played here before, the gentleman at bag drop was extremely helpful and nice, starter was nice too. Got checked in, used the range but had no real time on putting green, starter paired me up with two nice gentlemen who knew the course.

Facilities are in good condition. Golf course was in good condition, fairways were good, rough was okay, not really rough, greens looked good but were slow as snail... they had just aerated a couple weeks back, good thing we had rain all week, helped the greens close up a bit. But it was just the grass was too long, bumpy, bouncy slow putts are no fun. Hopefully greens are in shape for our tournament in August. Course layout even at shorter distance was challenging on most holes.

Cart lady wasn’t stocked with sandwiches, but had the usual and could take cards with the old credit slips method.

The only real dig I have to give this place is no pro shop.
I checked in at the counter for the restaurant/bar, turned around behind me to see a shelf that had some ball markers, but I didn’t notice if there were any gloves or balls at least. You need to have a room with a register and merchandise to sell, especially balls and gloves.

Enjoyed the round and the day and didn’t shoot too bad either.

Not on my shortlist

I arrived on a Friday, not expecting it to be busy but apparently everybody and their mother decided to come out and play one the same day. Anyway, I checked in and stated I was a first timer and was explained everything from how to get the balls, driving range and how the course plays tight from holes 4-10. The gentleman was very polite and courteous and so was everyone there. I did the driving range for warmups, then headed to practice putting. I was told the greens are pure, so I wanted to be ready. I stopped at the starters first, as I always do, to check in and let him know I was here. He then promptly asked if I was ready to go and to join the group that was about to tee off. The gentlemen I played with were great, helped me around the course a little with knowledge and I enjoyed the day.

The course, I’ve avoided this place like a plague for a while, prices and then the biggest of them all...SHORT. The whole course is short. I think 4 holes are driveable (280-330 yds). Par is 70 with only 2 par 5s. Look, I’m not Rory or DJ, I still pound it 280 though and really only one hole should have that feature. Although 10 is a toughie and you need an absolute perfect shot to hit the green. Which I thought I did with me 3 wood, since hole was playing 273. However, the draw that looked wonderful and was turning towards the dogleg left to the green kept drawing right into the water in front and to the left of green. Yeah, fairway narrows to a bottleneck when you hit 240-250 right to the narrow green. The course does have its challenges, but it’s short and that’s a mood killer for me. Price is about average for this time of year but got a hot deal that helped out a bit. Greens, not THAT pure. They were good, most of the time they broke the way you expected and paid for it dearly if you did t play enough break. There were a few holes where that didn’t occur. May have been misreads but it looked like it would break and went straight.

The cart girl is cute and takes credit cards with a tablet so no taking the CC back to the clubhouse.

I’ll be back for the VGA tournament but I don’t think I’d go back because of the length.

Average layout with good greens

Mayfair has been around a while and judging by the exterior, it’s easy to tell there is history here. It’s a real golf course, only one hole is lined with houses and they are technically REALLY out of play. The layout of the course is pretty straightforward, not really a lot of challenge on holes. Fairways are narrow but with the rough dormant right now, there is no punishment there. Each hole is wide so you have some forgiveness. The greens were in great condition, rolled smooth and broke accordingly. They weren’t super fast, about a 10.5, but you paid for it downhill if you missed the hole and hit too hard.

Outside appearances may be old, but inside of the pro shop is renovated and up to date. With adequate supply of necessities. There is a bar/grill and cart lady was around frequent enough.

The only real knock I have to give the course is the driving range is small, both ways, only like 6-8 people can use it at one time and you can’t use a club greater than 160 yds. It’s not enough real estate but it’s better than nothing and allows a sufficient warmup prior to round.

Personnel were polite and I was greeted with a gentleman who drove a cart out to me and told me exactly where to head to do whatever. Good service all around.

Overall, it was a good experience.

Excellent greens

Black Bear is a course I needed to head to for a practice round, before our VGA tournament there. The course has no water except for the last hole and it’s a huge obstacle. The course is in good shape, rough is dormant currently so it’s not a penalty hitting into the rough. Fairways are in excellent shape and look good. Greens, while not super fast, roll about a 10.5, but are smooth, so downhill putts are dangerous and don’t stop. Break so rhat you see, actually break, sometimes more than you read. They are also undulating and sloped so position on green really matters, they are tough. I love em. Hot deal tee time made it worth it. It goes a little through a housing community but wasn’t too bad. Overall, my golf was crud but the day was good.

Challenging Layout

Timacuan is a course with fast greens, a good layout and good facilities.

Upon arrival, not very clear where pro shop is. I knew it was downstairs, so I went around back to get there. Through the Cafe to the right, down a hallway, to the right again, I found the pro shop. A few signs directing you would be nice. ATM right outside shop. Its and adequate enough pro shop, enough necessities and some branded apparel. Check in was smooth, told them it was first time here, they directed me to where and how driving range works. It's across the street from first hole tee box and is debit/credit/cash and you put a bucket under, pick your size and pay. Driving range is natural grass, with some mats at the back, in case it gets bad out. Good amount of target flags out in range. No yardage signs to get an idea of what to hit. There is a Foley academy based here too. Practice green was fast, but actually matched the greens out on course, even late in day, greens were fast. About 10.5 at least. My playing partners had lots of troubles with speed. I didn't since I love fast greens.

Starter was nice and had me paired up in no time. The course condition itself is in good overall condition. Some tee boxes could use help, but most were in decent to good shape. Rough was really not rough, cut somewhat short. Looked a little dried out in some areas. Course itself was pretty firm, got a lot of run through the fairways where I expected a 3 wood or 5 iron to stop. Fairways were in pretty good condition, defined and no sparse areas noted, at lest where I played. The real joy was the greens. Fast, about 10.5 or better. I usually wind up fixing a ball mark or two on each green, not here, I maybe fixed 3 or 4 at most, besides mine. people round here seem to know to fix the marks. It wasn't a joy downhill, but I had good speed most of the time. Really enjoyed putting, especially the 16 footer I made on 18 for birdie.

Whites are a little short for me at 6K yards. Blues at 6500 is a better challenge for the better golfer. you'll need to watch your club selection on this course.

The carts are nice, but lacked coolers? Neither of the carts in our group had one.

GPS was a little flaky too. 7 holes in and we gave up on it. Even though it was the beginning of our round, it started us on nine, we changed it to one, it worked till the hole was over, then went to main menu. After trying for 7 holes, it wouldn't even allow us to use the GPS, could never get a hole to come up. We gave up on it. It started to work properly on 15. It also did not have the proper pin placements located on screen, unlike other courses that had the same GPS system.

One fail overall, is the cart girl. We saw her as we were ready to tee off one hole one. We made it all the way back to the club house 2 hours 15 minutes later and still hadn't seen her. Fortunately, i got stuff at the cafe but I could have used the stuff a few holes back, like around 5 or 6. We finally saw her on 10, but she went to the other twosomes cart and never checked to see if we wanted anything. Sad. I've seen cart girls up to 4 times in a round, twice on each side. This was a fail in my book.

The guy at 18 who wipes your clubs down while you finish the 18th is a nice touch. thank you!!

meh, it was golf

I don't really care too much about tee to green, i've played on farm pastures, so this place is a little better. For what i paid, it was worth it to hit a ball around the course. What i did not like is that most greens are littered with crabgrass. Some just have small patches, some are speckled all over. It affects the ball even when cut. It's a bit discouraging to see that. Some of the tee boxes, I played from the tips, had no grass, but grass seed was spread out on them. It's nice to see bunkers with sand in them again. Not filled to the brim with water. There are enough holes with water hazards.

Out in BFE but worth the trip

I am always leary of courses that are associated with community; As they are usually not courses, but communities with some golf holes strung in beteen the houses, that the houses come into play on mildly bad shots. So I avoid those courses like the plague if I can. That is not the case here. The golf course is associated with a community and is surrounded by it, but is not anywhere near affecting it. There is no chance in .... that you'll hit a house even if you tried to. The holes are arranged in groups of 2 to 3 at times, but nothing makes you feel as if you are playing in someones back yard. it definitely is a golf course, with houses around the outskirts. Water is in play on a few holes, but was not really much trouble for the straight shooter. The fairways are about average in width, but the rough is pretty wide on most holes, so even if you Phil Mickelson a drive, you'll still have the chance to Phil Mickelson your butt back onto the green somehow. The fairways were in great condition. The tee boxes, for the most part wee good. there were a few that needed to be toe up and re- leveled, as if they were crowned. they were also the chopped up ones. might be time to repair those tee boxes.
The greens.........HOLY (BEEEEEEEEEP) Not only were they rolling great and in great condition but were rolling an 11 on the stimp meter. Extremely fast. I was on in regulation on a par 3 early in round with a 30 foot putt. It was uphill, then downhill. Putted too lightly, it went 24 feet. I knew I had 6 feet downhill, I had 8 feet on the return, the ball wouldn't stop. I hit it firm and what I thought was light, yeah, it wasn't. Needless to say, 4 putted. Even with the knowledge from the practice green, it didn't help. By the seventh hole, I was getting the hang of them though and my back 9 was much better.
Service was very exemplary, polite and with a smile, Cart girl was cute and fully stocked. Too bad I didn't need anything from her. Cart girl is cash only. most are, but some are finally coming into 2018 and accepting credit/debit cards.
I'm not commenting on pace of play, it was a Friday and I was alone, 4 hours with extra practice and a small rain delay on the last hole.
Overall, it was worth the trip down here.

Worth the money, not bad...

Played on a hot day. Got there and knew nothing of course, where to go nor what to do. Bag drop was there, but no one to greet you and take clubs and put them on cart. Went inside, checked in, guy at register was polite. For some reason, didn't feel like asking him for info on what to do. I basically put my own bag on a cart that looked available, got my balls and followed someone to driving range. That was obvious part. Where hole 1 was, I didn't know till I got to range and saw the sign....No starter. None. people just lined up and rolled out as they got there. Granted I played at 11:30, not early in morning, but here's the rub. I could have just played for free today. if I knew what to do beforehand and was unscrupulous, I would have just loaded the bag up on cart, drove out to range, and when theree was an opening...just go.
So service at this course took a hit big time.

The course, not too much difference between blacks and blues. played from the black. I'm not a long hitter, about 260 right now, but it did make me verify with my Arccos that i can carry the necessary carry yardage. Which I could. Some carry was 217 yards. The 3rd hole. It's a doozy and I hit my best drive of the day on it. The greens were in good shape, kind of crusty and a little fast, got used to the speed quickly though. Fairways were okay, rough was good. bermuda is some tough stuff to get through when it's thick. Course was not rolling at all though. Course is soft due to all the rain we've had. So drives ain't going nowhere. Facilities on course are available at end of 4th hole and 12th. The one at 12 is perfect. the course layout on back is perfectly laid out that you hit a water cooler and restroom on 12, then come back around to it on 16th tee. Water coolers were a welcome treat on every other hole it seemed. Guess they know they live in Florida. yes, they had a cart lady, but waiting for water is bad. Cart lady came around twice on my round, which was shortened by unforeseen circumstances...NO Balls left...Which i'll get to. I love hole 12. Played from the blacks, hit a beautiful drive, just up left side of fairway. If I was a longer hitter though, I'd have been in trouble. The hole is tight with big old trees. The tee shot is restricted too, a little, from there anyway. Which makes for a great look. play to right side of fairway to keep big tree on left out of play. I had to draw the ball slightly to avoid the tree. Great hole. Okay, so yeah, I ran out of balls, I didn't have many to begin with, was playing great till backside. I was short in mud on a par 3, looked good, but short, SPLAT. Disappeared. pulled two into water on the 14th? Par 3. Water on left side, pulled both left...LOL oh well, hit a bad shot, on a par 5 which put another ball in water, which i should never have hit that shot... The one that peeves me the most though, is 16. See, 16 is not long, and is innocent enough, but unless you know the hole, you don't know you can't go left at all. I mean left of 150 marker. yeah, in fairway 150 marker. You split that fairway down middle, you MAY have 15 yards to play with on left side before a marsh. If doesn't look like a hazard, until you get there and notice its a bona fide swamp and balls disappear from good drives there. Needed to play to the right of 150 marker. It's 321 from the black, so, I wouldn't have gotten to green, but I expected to be okay. it was a good shot to left side of "fairway'. Anyway. I like the course. yes, it is through a community, but most holes, the houses are pretty far away out of play. the only super close ones are off the tee boxes on 10 and 11. So it doesn't feel like you are playing in someone's backyard most of the time. Not bad for the money. After being at celebration and the experience I had there, this pales in comparison.

Course needs serious help

I played here once before earlier in year around May. Course was not that bad then or I didn’t take notice of too much. Last time there was one green that looked like it had razor burn. Overzealous mowing on edge or something. Well this time I stopped counting the amount of greens that had serious damage that affected play. How can you putt on a green where it’s actually missing green and is a dirt crater? It changed the way I played some holes, had to chip from the fringe instead of putt to avoid putt going off line. Never mind the cauliflower(clover) growing in spots. Tee boxes had nothing but weeds growing instead of grass or were sparse of grass. The fairways were the only thing going for it. Okay, the cart girl is the only other thing going for it. Service from staff was great. The course condition is a killer though.

Pretty good track

First time here, Course condition is good. Greens shrinkage is a little on the aggressive side. Greens officially were small with a nearly 3 foot fringe. Really looked like they forgot to cut the outer edge of greens. Makes greens artificially small and those original sizes were fine. That’s my only gripe. The course layout was good, glad I had someone with course knowledge, a little hard to figure out where to hit sometimes. GPS machine in carts is very detailed on front center and back, but also nice reminders about cart path only when you got to par 3’s, as well as pace of play reminders with the current play time and what time you should be at. We were well ahead of that time. Staff was polite and sent me off a little earlier since I was a single and they had a twosome going out. Paula Creamer shot a 68 here. I love her...lol
Pub looks a little like a dive bar, but server was nice and the burger was Very very good. Not a complex menu but they did make a mean burger. Price is definitely good too, well worth it.

Was told Panther Lake is the harder of the two...

So I gave Panther Lake a try first. Mainly because I could get an earlier tee time on that course.

Course layout is tough, but fair, wide in areas. Nice not to have to deal with homes. Although there was that one tree that bleep me off by being in the way and encouraging my ball to lay tight against the trunk. Sigh. Anyway, the course was in good condition. Greens are firm, pretty firm, I drop cannonballs, they hit like meteors and the ball marks were not that deep, easy to fix. The speed had to be at least 11-11.5. Not used to that when they roll that great. Lost four strokes cause the ball stopped short of the hole by 1 inch. If you don’t have dying speed you will pay if you miss hole. Couple more times I should be good.
To the people behind us, I am sorry for our pace of play. I’ve never played with a group so slow in my life. They were all good but sheesh they took a long time to hit. Agonizing, sometimes waiting for them to hit.
Cart girl was mandatory cute, friendly and well stocked. Only water to drink out on holes is at the restrooms. Water coolers every two holes is needed here cause it’s HOT!!!
Service was polite and with a smile, driving range is freaking HUGE!! Putting greens rate same speed or slower than course cause it wasn’t as dry as greens are. Course must drain super good cause it felt dry in spots for as much rain as we have gotten the past two months.
Will play again, looking forward to Crooked Cat.

Great course hidden in community

The only problems this course has is a few bunkers on about half the holes are still full of water and are not bunkers really. We have had lots of rain every day to the point of ridiculousness for several weeks. So they don’t get the chance to dry out. Some maintenance is being performed on course due to a blowout of an irrigation line and the back nine has construction on it.

The greens roll good and are running about a 10.5-11. Marshall/starter was watching pace of play. Staff has been very nice, the restaurant has the best burger too.
