Rocky at the Manor

We started on the back 9 and almost immediately noticed some very rough patches in the fairways, rough and par 3 tee boxes. Too be in that poor of shape this early in the season is not a good sign. For the going rate there are some better options in the area.

The course itself is challenging with a couple of funky holes but nothing overly absurd. The greens are smaller but not postage stamp small. Very undulating and at a medium/slow speed. Even with the slow greens there are some very big breaks.

Expected more for the going price

Not in very good condition for the rack rate. The fairways were not in great shape, some tee boxes also and the rough was very high for the level of player at this course. There were multiple comments in our group about price versus quality for that price. Plenty of other tracks in this area that are a better value for the money.

The new bar area looked nice and the staff was friendly.

Short but usually good conditons

Par 65 and short but well worth the price they charge. I will play here a few times a year to work on everything except my driver. The course conditions are usually as good or better than some other courses in the immediate area and the greens are not postage stamps like most shorter courses. A great place to work on your game or get in a low cost round.

Mixed Feelings

Mid-level track at a mid-level price. The layout is decently interesting with good sized greens that run at a nice pace which is out of the norm for a mid-level priced course. They have done a good job of bringing back most of the greens and fairways that they lost last year. You get what you pay for with this course. Just don't expect top end conditions, there are some rough spots, but that should be expected at this price point.

I played there Easter Sunday and was a bit dismayed that I could no longer add onto a twosome as a single in the morning on the online system. Since the online booking system showed there were plenty of openings I just hopped in the car and went. The guy behind the counter was a bit taken aback that I had just shown up and told me 'you can't just do that, we have 600 new members and you can't just show up anymore'. That of course annoyed me a bit since I knew the tee sheet was VERY open.

He begrudgingly put me in but then charged me a higher price than the online rate which had me a bit miffed. I eventually paired up with one of their new members and he told me he had a similar experience with just showing up when he already knew the course was pretty open.

I would recommend the course to mid-level players that are 2 players or more. If you are a single looking to get paired up you might want to try another course. It's a shame about the new single player policy so it is pretty much off my list for now. I am not willing to pay more than those that can use the online booking system.

Response from on 06/02/2017:
Please understand that booking ahead of time online offers a lower rate than when booking in person at the course or over the phone for everyone. In the future, please find great daily deals when you book online here https://linfield-national-golf-club.play.teeitup.com/ We do have more members now, but we apologize if there was a miscommunication about being able to walk in and book your round.

Thanks for the response from Linfield but my point is as a single I cannot book online before 2pm on the weekend. My only choice would be to phone in or show up and pay more which I am not willing to do. Two days from now on Saturday I see 4 tee times with just 2 players at 8am or earlier but as a single I cannot add onto those. Plenty of other morning tee times for 2 to 4 players open as well, which I personally would never book as a single, but it's a shame I can no longer add onto twosomes. I am already playing Limekiln Saturday AM and then Bella Vista Saturday PM but it would have been nice to play Linfield on Sunday morning. There must be a reason for this trend (GolfNow fees?) but as a golfer that plays about half of my 140+ rounds a year as a single adding onto other groups I am not very excited about it and am avoiding courses that are not single friendly.

Up and down

The course has a lot of elevation changes and you will end up with a lot of side hill, uphill or downhill lies. Greens are receptive and roll at a decent pace. There can be some very challenging chip shots due to the undulation, firmness and speed of the greens. Some holes tended to slope off the back but that is an adjustment you can make for future rounds. The sand in the greenside bunkers makes shots very playable. I wish more courses uses the same type of sand.

5 hour and 15 minute round

13 minutes between driving to 2nd tee and being able to tee off. We purposely slowed down on the 2nd hole so then only had about an 8 minute wait on hole 3 before we could tee off. The 2 groups directly behind us played hole 2 as 1 group of 7 players and finished the hole on pace due to the backups. The tee times are so close at only 8 minutes apart it creates a lot of waiting. 5 hours and 15 minutes later we finished the round.

The online booking both on Golf Now and the courses website may show spots available for 1 or 2 golfers but in my experience you cannot complete the booking as only 1 player it must be 2. I tried to fix this both through Golfnow and directly with the course but to my knowledge it has not been fixed.

Greens were a little on the slow side and somewhat bumpy today.

Terrible Pin Placements Today

Course is fairly wide open but you can find some trouble if you don't play to avoid trouble/sand. The pin placements today were horrible placed where about 11 or 12 of the first 15 holes were on top of crests, on the side of a crest or underneath a crest. They needed a clowns mouth on the 15th. I watched a putt roll from the side of the hole turn slowly just short of the hole and then roll 15 feet right. The next guy was about 12 feet below the hole, putted straight up to within 1 inch of the hole where the ball stopped and then rolled backwards about 10 feet. It would be a pretty nice course if they weren't so insane with the hole placements.

Nice layout, good shape, bunker sand inconsistent

Enjoyed the layout, speed of the greens (fast for a public course), and slope of the greens without going overboard (though some pin placements were a little close to decent size breaks). All in all a good course where I felt it was worth the hour long drive to get to. Nice elevation changes, nice size greens and in good condition.

I would have loved this course if not for some of the sand traps. One par 5 they had soft, white, fluffy sand in the fairway bunkers. I hit a shot that had enough steam to roll to top of trap, get caught by the lip at top and then roll back down to the center of the trap. Not a problem until I realized I had a semi-fried egg from rolling back down the trap. Up at the green they had courser sand but so little in the traps you would bounce off the dirt underneath. In fact the first hole the trap had the black lining underneath the sand sticking out due to so little sand. Also some holes one greenside bunker would have a very thin layer of the heavier sand but on the other side of the green a trap would have the white, fluffy beach sand.
