Lakes Golf Course at Laura Walker State Park
Played On 12/03/2020Incredible Value but Course Seen better Fall Seasons
I play here often, have seen it immaculate and seen it embarrassing. This trip was in the middle. Greens were very inconsistent, appeared several were dormant or dead and painted, and others had wooly patches. Made it difficult to determine approach and putting was as much luck as skill. The bunkers were in great shape compared to previous visits, but awfully shallow the two sand shots I had my club got into the liner under the sand. Pace of play was great, 3 of us played 18 holes in 2 hours 10 minutes thanks to courteous groups letting us through.

I love this track's layout and challenges. Requires hitting the right number off the tee on several holes and offers some risk reward opportunities as well. I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to them during this COVID-19 pandemic in terms of course conditions. I don't believe it'd been mowed in weeks. The greens were worse than aerated greens, it was truly like playing plinko with putts or chips due to the unwanted weeds sprouting up on the greens. Fairways weren't awful, but there were knee high weeds all over the place. Bunkers while not maintained as there were no rakes, still hadn't been raked in a LONG time, even had grass growing in them. I'll give them a pass with the virus going on, but was pretty disappointed in the condition. I've played several other courses this week and last, and none were in this poor of condition.

Kind of got what we paid for today. Have had a lot of rain, mud balls all day, but to be expected. Bunkers were in horrible shape. I understand rain messing them up some but they don’t look like they’ve even been raked since I played there in November. “Sprigs” of some sort of grass on the greens made for plinko like putting. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not upset at the hot deal, but I would have been pretty perturbed had I paid normal rates.

Love playing this course, it’s a real fun layout, a lot of risk/reward holes, measures only 6600 yards from the tips but plays pretty long. Good challenge, have played the white tees before and you can be real aggressive. Great course for any skill level. Only complaints today is that the range was closed and it appeared that they’d overseeded tee boxes and haven’t mowed them in over a week (I played last weekend as well) so on the par 3’s your tee shot was like hitting out of the rough.

We were here on a business trip and wanted to play a round of golf. We needed rental clubs and was told they had the new Cobra sets. Got to the course and rental clubs were a JOKE: non matching sets with beat up heads and slick grips. My set didn't even have a 3 wood, and the driver sounded like the face was cracked. Luckily my golf partner rented clubs as well and we were able to piece together DESCENT clubs to hit for most shots. Putters from this decade would have been nice. Most of the staff was friendly, only one gentleman working the counter came across rude. The pace of play was RIDICULOUSLY slow. The Marshall (only saw one, once, the entire 3 hours) was more concerned with the rakes being placed back in the bunkers than the fact that it had taken us 45 minutes to play the first 2 holes. We literally waited on every tee and every approach shot for nine holes. Described here as "some of the best greens in San Diego" needs to be re-evaluated. I've played greens that were aerated that had more grass and rolled more true. We paid for 18 holes, but left after nine as it was a complete waste of a rare trip to California for us.
