Shepherd's Crook Golf Course
Played On 06/04/2020Course is in great shape
The golf course is in the best shape I’ve ever seen it. The greens were awesome, even with the wet spring, course is firm. $39 to ride for 18, it’s the best deal in Chicagoland for a great course.:
I will be back. If you have never played the course, it’s a must play. I’ve played everything ,and it’s a top 5 public course.:
Thank you for your review, Michael1985038. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Shepherd's Crook Golf Course. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

This was the first time playing this course. It was good to see it for the first time. The layout was not too bad. It had some good holes, but I was not blown away. As far as the staff and other things, there’s no way to to rate that during times like these. As far as course conditions, there’s not much they can do because of the rain and a number of holes sit in low areas. The rough was literally so high in some areas that the grass was starting to seed, LOL. The bunkers were unplayable on virtually every hole. Based on the financial situation, I would guess these will be like this for awhile and I suspect they have been like these for months. the greens were excellent with some good slope. Obviously back in the private club days this was the golf course defense and they were fast and true. They are so slow now, it’s almost not even worth putting. Most of the bad conditions that are on the course looks to be caused by their own maintenance schedule and mowing standing water damage. It also looks like they may have some membership that has been taking carts out and in this wet season, they have done some significant damage. The course does not have cart paths from tee to green, so they don’t have any options. If you are wanting to try something new, it might be worth it if you get a good deal. There are so many other options and better playing conditions in this market. I don’t see this course being around too much longer, play it before it’s gone...Note this not a “ Ravislo” which is another private club gone public...but done the right way with huge investments.
Hi, thank you for reviewing the course. We would like to first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. Your feedback about the course is important to us. We are working to get everything up to par as the current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We are going to escalate your feedback to our team so we can make improvements before your next game, and we will continue to work towards an excellent experience by using your comment for guidance. Thank you for playing Turnberry Country Club. We hope to see you again soon.
ThunderHawk Golf Club
Played On 05/19/2020A very wet morning round
I decided to take advantage of a discount to walk this course. Played as a single as there was nobody on the course, maybe 4 people on the entire course. I was shocked at the amount of water that was still on the golf course, standing water in every fairway and I mean standing. It’s the wettest fairways I have ever experienced. To the course credit it was still very playable. No way you could have played the back tees, it would have played to 8000 yards as there was no roll on any shots. The course has only been open for 4 days. The biggest surprise was the amount of divots and ball marks that were visible on all of the tees, greens and fairways. It appeared that there had been no maintenance done this season as some of these were from last fall.:I was hoping to see near perfect conditions except for the water of course, since they have had virtuallY no play and no carts on the course this season. I suspect maybe there have been cutbacks due to our health crisis. There were also a few washed out bunkers. It was great to play this layout as it’s one of the best in Illinois. However they are also one of the most expensive and with our current economy this place better be perfect for the price and it was not. It appeared that the tee markers had been in the same place for 4 days ....in wet conditions this is not a good idea.
I might try it agin in the fall when conditions are back to normal.:
Sunset Valley Golf Club
Played On 08/17/2019Greens are the best I’ve played in Chicago area
These greens are the best I’ve played on a public course as far as speed and condition and it’s not even close.
They are in terrific shape, the course is good shape overall including bunkers but the fairways are still in the infant stages so the grass in still thin and needs a few more growing seasons.i play mount prospect which has received a number of awards and this course is equal or better with regards to layout and greens.
Still a little pricey but really a nice corse and the best public course on the north shore, play it you won’t be disappointed
Glenview Park Golf Club

Greens are excellent. Pace of play was great.
It’s still a little pricey compared to a few other options locally.:
Mt Prospect Golf Club
Played On 09/30/2018Fortunately I got to go out first, but a little too early. The “grounds crew” was still working on the course and the traps were not raked and greens were being cut. Course is really starting to show the tough spring that we had and the turf is taking a beating; the fairway divots are massive and look to be the victim of a lot of rounds with guys who have no idea what a bottle of sand is.. To pay $58 to walk on Sept 30th is pretty pricey. I assumed that since I had a $60 rate which included a cart that they at least give be a break for walking... but no discount. That’s a head scratcher .
Looks like I will be stick to the short game area, there are better deals to be found at the end of this season.
Stoatin Brae at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort
Played On 09/13/2018Course is maturing fast
This course is really starting to show its true challenge. In five years this course will be the best course and challenge in Southwest Michigan. Easily already a top 10 course in the state as far as public access, for the money this course can’t be touched. They are adding the driving range now which is a must. I will have no problem driving from Chicago to play 36 for have the price of sand valley in Wisconsin. The best part of this course so far is the turf. Closest thing to this grass is The Loop and Whistling Straits when it first opened before they softened it up for PGA and now future Ryder Cup. This is a must play !!

Heritage Oaks Golf Club - Classic 18
Played On 07/15/2018Great early times available
Great condition. Played early 6 am on Sunday. Finished in 3.5 hours !!
Can’t figure out why this course needs renovation which is scheduled soon, too bad.
I suspect they will create more hazards and water run off areas which is the trend, these old parkland tracts are disappearing.

Crab Orchard Golf Club
Played On 10/08/2016Great fall golf
Course conditions were excellent. However, the greens were just punched and there was a lot of sand so the greens were crazy slow. Unfortunately the greens were not cut in the morning we played so that added to the slow speed. Pace was great and we played in 3 hours and the price was great. Will play again !
Thanks for the positive comments. Just wanted to touch base about the slower greens following the aerification. That process requires quite a lot of sand. The day you played, we had a heavy dew and the sand was sticking to the bed knives/reels rendering a cut almost useless. It is one of the side effects of aerification which is necessary for good putting surfaces. Come back out sometime and try them at their normal speed.

George W Dunne National Golf Course
Played On 08/20/2016Course was very wet...looks like more of a watering problem vs too much rain
Course conditions have gone down over the last month. Greens and fairways were so wet from over watering that many areas were non playable. Greens were so slow the "putting" was impossible.
Great layout but looks like money for upkeep is drying up.
Twice during the round we were actually waiting for somebody to move the pin on the green. This is at 8:30 in the morning on a Saturday. Are you kidding me !! I've Ben playing golf for 40 years and I've never seen somebody change the pin location while you are playing the hole. Crazy to think this is something that is acceptable when you are playing $50+ for a round. There are better choices in Chicagoland.

Excellent course, great shape. Golfnow deal was too good to pass up. Course is difficult from Blue tees, driver not in your hand on a number of holes.
Thanks for your awesome review Michael! We hope you'll make another visit to the course this Fall.
