Great all around experience

We were about fifteen minutes early to our tee time at Olde Stonewall but wanted to hit some balls. So we asked if we could warm up and push us back on the tee sheet. Not a problem at all. Extremely accommodating. The starter then came to get us on the range when we were next on the tee, about twenty minutes after our initial tee time.

The conditions were fantastic considering the time of the year. I can imagine I would've given it five stars if it were earlier in the season so I almost feel guilty about not giving it five stars.

Pace was great and the starters ensure that groups are spread out enough so we won't be playing up behind anyone or have anyone playing up on us (even though the group behind us did but that's a long story).

I love the clubhouse that's designed like a castle. Truly one of a kind. To make a long story short, this place was fantastic and on par with every other high end public course that I have been to.

Wonderful OCMD Course

Everything about the course was great. The course conditions are some of the best I've ever played, especially considering that it was early July. There's also GPS on the carts which is awesome.

The only negative takeaway is that there's no driving range to warm up, but there's a nice short game practice area.

Some people might also want to know that there's no formal restaurant, just a cafe with a seating area. This place would be awesome with an outdoor dining area to enjoy a nice cold drink. The seating area as it is now has big windows with a view of the practice areas and the first tee. Put this view outside and it'll rival most public courses.

Do Not Play

Called Tuesday for a Sunday tee time. I had a groupon that couldn't be used until 11. Person on the phone said there was an outing on Sunday starting at 11 but I could play the tee time right before at 1048. I get to the course after a 50 minute drive and they tell me I cannot use it. Uh what?

Not only that, the guy who I am assuming is the manager kept saying how the person who booked it will be paying for my tee time. Golf is an expendable income hobby so I said I didn't want them to do that. It's probably some high school kid who was trying to be accommodating.

Let me be clear: it is not that they didn't honor the groupon. I'm totally understanding of why regulations are in place but 1 telling me I could use it and 2 how they approached the issue when I arrived. They were just flat out huge jerks about it. I don't want some kid in high school who was trying to be nice to pay for a $65 tee time. I asked if I could at least get the 11am rate if I'm going to pay full price. I didn't want someone else paying for my tee time. Nope. They're losing an additional golfer for the day off the tee sheet if I left but they didn't seem to care. It was 12 minutes! I wouldn't be complaining if they didn't already book me earlier in the week.

So I left and played Landis Creek down the road. With so many courses in the area, I will never return. Unbelievable. Worst service at a golf course I have ever received. No wonder you can't even email anyone on the staff through their website.

Awesome Layout, Great Course, Conditions Not So Much

The good: The course was awesome. Great layout. Tons of fun. Beautiful views. Challenging enough for me (12ish handicap) but still fun for my fiancee (her 5th or so time playing ever). So they do a great job of setting the very front tees in places where beginners can play from.

The bad: For a "high end" course, I expected the conditions to be better. The first fairway was probably the roughest. The mixture of heat, humidity and rain obviously did a number on this course. Working at a golf course in the past, I understand that there's only so much a grounds team can do sometimes. However, for a place that sells itself as a golf resort, it was still disappointing. It might have just been a seasonal thing in mid-August but I can only attest to the time I played it.

Awesome Place

I tend to always have a good time a Berkleigh. The course is fun and still holds a challenge. I am glad they haven't fallen by the wayside like some courses and I'm glad they also haven't price gouged like some courses. It was one of the first courses I ever played about 4 years ago now.

This past weekend, I called to play around 4 (twilight) but they said 4 was backed up. Since I was a single, I could come at 3:30 and I'd still get the Twilight rate. They were able to fit me in with another group instead of by myself at 4:40. This ranked very highly on my list as I always want to play and get home as early as possible.

Pace was good once we got past the group in front of us at the turn, it was wide open. Thankfully, they stopped for food and we didn't because there were two beginners (we saw one guy helping another with a back swing). They wouldn't let us through for some reason, either. So the only knock is that I wish there was a ranger around (I realize this costs extra money so I don't hold this against them after 4pm).

I still say their bunkers are a bit rough, to say the least. Almost none have any sand left in them and if you're on a greenside bunker, it's almost impossible to get out because it's hard to get underneath the ball. You're either hitting it thin or you're skying the ball across the green. I'd almost play it like a regular chip shot instead of the typical 1-2 inches behind the ball. Other than that, everything was fine.

Thanks for everything, Berkleigh!

Too Bad

The staff is extremely friendly. I had a weekend tee time of 10am but they let me tee off early because it was open. Guy at the desk was extremely friendly and warm.

You can tell this place is bleeding money a bit since it looks like it was sold very recently (I think it was called Twining Valley up until last year) It's too bad that the course conditions were so terrible. Tee boxes left without grass, fairways also. I didn't even finish 18. I left after 11 because it comes back to the clubhouse (full disclosure: part of this was also because my boss called me with some time sensitive material I needed to find a Starbucks and do some work remotely from. I still left despite her saying that I could wait until my round wasn't over. Decided it wasn't worth it).

There was one hole that I didn't finish of the 11 I did play because there was not only a plethora of geese, but also a huge swarm of yellow jackets that also made me believe there was a nest nearby. No thanks.

It's too bad. Perhaps other people won't have such bad luck and their conditions will recover because I think they do know, at least, friendly service. They also have a fitness center, locker room and everything that would seem to make membership worthwhile if it just got some TLC.

Horrible Service

Never play this course, ever. They don't deserve your money.

I had read some reviews online about the service at the course before heading there. The first time I went, they weren't overly rude but they weren't nice and welcoming by any means.

The second time I headed out to this course, I got stuck in traffic and just missed the 11:38 tee time as I checked in at 11:40. The guy in the shop noted that I was late (as if I wasn't aware) and said that my group had teed off already. Usually when you're late as a single on a weekday, they'll fit you in with a later group. No, they made me skip the first hole and drove me out to the second hole with my group (note: if the tee time was 11:38, and my group of three was already on the second hole at 11:42, they definitely teed off early).

What really got under my skin was how rude they were about it. If they would have asked nicely about whether or not I would mind skipping the first hole to keep up with their tee sheet, I would have been fine with it. Instead, he had me jump into a cart and I had no clue where I was going. I stopped at the first hole (who had a threesome) so I just assumed I could join them. He made special note to tell me that, "we're not stopping here, their fourth is late too" (probably also stuck in traffic). And he had me meet up with my group.

The best part was that we were on hole 12, and the fourth of the group behind us finally showed up and she was forced to join the group on hole 12 (I hope she didn't get charged full price). I saw the guy drive her up to the green behind us on hole 11. Ridiculous. Sometimes these things happen, but there's no need to be rude about it.

I will say this: The conditions are good for a public course and pace was as good as it gets (again, it was a Friday morning). I cannot complain about the course but I will never visit again due to the staff. If I could give the staff 0 stars or even lower, I would.
