Played this morning and teed off at 822. The course wasn’t busy during this time and we didn’t see another group until 9.
Course conditions were surprisingly good. Good grass coverage on the fairways. Greens were in awesome shape and picked up speed as they dried out.
I was paired up with two great who provided a fun day.

Horrible customer service

I played Raven late Saturday morning. We were set to tee off at 1133.
We arrived earlier than expected at 1000. Walked up to the three attendants on duty carrying our bags and waited. Two of the three attendants made eye contact with us but chose to ignore us. One finally asked if we were playing. He stated they were waiting for carts but would have one for us quickly. We went in the clubhouse, paid for our greens fee and range balls, and went back outside expecting our bags to be on a cart. No such luck. Went to chip and putt thinking a cart would be available by the time we finished.
The front range was closed today and they were using the back portion of the range for warm up. At this time we were approximately 45 minutes to our tee time. I asked one of the employees if we could get a cart to go to the back of the range to warm up. He said he needed to start a group and to ask one of the other employees. I asked another employee and he said they were still waiting on carts. My friend went inside to and asked someone at the front desk if we could get a cart and he said no problem we'll run you back there. So nearly an hour of being at the course we finally received a cart and were able to go to the range and warm up. The back range required a drive down the 13th hole interfering with players on that hole. We received a "loner" cart to go to the range. We had to put our clubs on the cart. When coming back we received our actual playing cart in which we had to move our clubs to. I don't mind putting my own clubs on the cart but this is supposed to be a high end course.
After being told we could proceed to the 1st tee an employee came after us saying one of us hadn't paid and we needed to visit the pro shop.
Needless to say a lot of confusion before our round even started. I understand if I was playing a lower end course without the resources to have enough carts or to have a playable range but the Raven does not fit this description. A course claiming to be one of the top in the valley provided extremely poor customer service.
On to the course itself. Tee boxes were chewed up pretty bad and not real level. Some were better than others but not the greatest. Fairways were in good shape. A few bare spots but not in horrible shape. Greens were all consistent and were great to hit into and putt on. Overall the course was in good late Phoenix summer condition.
Pace of play was good through the front nine and then hit a wall on the back side. Two hours on the front and 2.5 hours on the back.
Needless to say the customer service today left a lot to be desired. I don't expect to be pampered all the time but when playing a course with the reputation and price of the Raven you expect a little more. Not sure I'll be back after today's experience.

AZ summer golf

I played Wildfire on a late Saturday tee time. Check in and customer service was great as normal with a Marriott course.
Range balls included in the tee time and range was in decent shape.
Tee boxes and greens were in good condition and very consistent. The fairways were brown and hard. A few drives bounced so high they appeared to be hitting off of cart path. Many areas around the greens were having turf replaced and large chunks of grass were nearly unplayable.
I was surprised at the overall condition of Wildfire considering I have played here before in the summertime and it is usually kept in better condition than most golf courses in the area.

Talking Stick

I played Saturday, June 25th around 1030. Even with the heat the course was a busy place and pace of play was not smooth. They were letting twosomes go out and not pairing up groups and caused pace of play to be slower than it should have been.
Customer service was good throughout the day. Clubhouse and starter were both friendly and we saw the beverage cart numerous times throughout the round.
The driving range was chewed up and it was hard to find decent grass to hit on. The range is gigantic and it was disappointing to see this condition especially on a busy weekend.
The course was in good shape for late June in Arizona. Conditions throughout the round were consistent. Tee boxes were all level. The fairways were a little on the dry side but playable. The greens were in good shape and putted fast. Sand traps were a bit inconsistent. Some were nice and fluffy with plenty of sand while others were like playing out of the desert.
The North course is wide open and fairly playable. Some well struck shots are unlucky enough to find the desert with little to no chance of hitting out. Many desert areas are OB. My partner had a well struck drive roll three yards off the grass and under a dead mesquite tree.
I haven't played here in a couple of years and it was nice to play this course again. I'm not sure I could play this course regularly but right now the conditions are good to get a round of summer golf in at a place most people can't afford in the winter/spring month.

Fun course

I played Lookout Mountain on a Wednesday late afternoon tee time. The course was mostly empty and I was able to get around at a good pace.
Customer service was good and I felt like the employees cared I came out to play. Range balls are included in the greens fee. The driving range is currently on the small side. Hitting driver would clear the back fence and put balls in the desert.
The course isn't overly long with the tips around 6500 yards on the scorecard. Many of the tee boxes were moved up cutting off some yardage for the course. No matter the yardage the course is a challenge and keeping it playable is a must. Many holes are straightforward but some are a little tricky to play. The course features some good views from elevated tees and it's always fun to hit tee shots from elevated tees.
The course was in awesome shape considering the recent heat. Fairways looked slightly brown but they were nice to hit off and provided a good amount of roll on drives. Tee boxes were all in great condition.
The condition of the greens were a positive point of the golf course. The speed on them was very consistent. Subtle breaks made for interesting putts especially if putting from any kind of distance.

I got out to the Crossings last Wednesday, June 8th. We teed off around 1230 with a good amount of play at the course. I last played this course a couple of years ago and conditions were pretty consistent from my previous experience.
The course if fun from a visual standpoint with elevated tees, views of the ocean, and the numerous crossings of the canyon. I am always surprised at how much ground this golf course covers.
The course overall was in good shape. The greens were very sandy for my round and made the greens slightly bumpy. Any ball hit on the green made a huge "splash" of sand.
The course if fun and challenging. I'm not sure I would pay a posted rack rate but for the price I paid on GN it was a good value.

Fun and challenging

I played Superstition on Saturday, August 1st and teed off around 0850. The course was busy and pace of play was slow. The ranger said a large group had gone off earlier and was holding play up. The pace wasn't horrible but it could have been much faster.
The course was fun to play and a bit of a challenge. The areas around the green had a number of grass bunkers and they seemed to gobble up any approach shot not spot on. The course also featured a number of dogleg holes but most of them were not overly long.
Conditions of the course were typical for August in the Phoenix area. Some dry areas and some soggy wet areas. The greens were in fairly good shape and were consistent through the day. They accepted shots. Many of the tee boxes were not level where they were set up.
Overall, the course was fun and challenging. I'm not sure I'll be back but am glad to have played this course once.

Decent conditions

I played the Desert/Canyon 18 hole combination on at 2:30 pm on July 8th. GN's rate was $22 including range balls. The course was not busy at all and we were able to play at a fairly good pace.
The driving range pretty chewed up where they had it set up. Finding enough grass to hit off of was difficult. "Chewed up" is actually a good way to describe most of the course. Many of the tee boxes, especially on the par 3s, had a large amount of divots and bare spots and a few were not level. One tee box on a par three was unplayable because of so many divots. The fairways were in decent shape but again with a lot of divots and bare spots. The greens were also in similar condition with a lot of un-repaired ball marks and bare spots. They didn't have a lot of grass on them and were fast. The strong winds we had that day really affected putts. I know it's summertime but the course was in rough shape overall.
The views on the course are pretty awesome and you don't realize how far up the side of the mountain you go on the desert 9. The course is fun and challenging without a lot of length. Shot placement and proper yardage will help you score here.
Given the conditions I experienced I think better values exist within the same area of Scottsdale/Phoenix.

Mediocre conditions

I played Stonecreek on Friday, 6/26 around 1pm. The course actually had some play going on so I teed off on the back nine. The employee in the pro shop was actually friendly which doesn't happen often at Stonecreek.
Many of the tee boxes were set in uneven areas and it was hard to find an area to tee the ball up. The fairways and greens had a lot of bare spots. The greens were ok. They had been aerated recently and still had some signs of it. They were on the slow side and hard to get a read on all day. The sand traps were inconsistent at best. Some of them were soft and fluffy and others were more like playing out of the desert.
They were watering the course like crazy while I was playing. Many areas on the course were soggy wet and balls were plugging in the ground. I was waiting to hit a pitch and the groundskeeper turned the sprinklers on me and got me pretty wet.
I only paid $15 to play and the course is 7 minutes from my house so I shouldn't complain but every time I go to Stonecreek I'm reminded of why I don't play it that often. The course is challenging and has some fun holes but the course doesn't seem to do a very good job at keeping conditions up.

Tucson golf with views

I played Arizona National 6/19 at 0757 for $40 including golf, range balls, meal, and a drink. This is the first time I have played here since'08 and from what I've read and heard I'm glad I haven't.
The course was in outstanding shape with a few exceptions. Greens were all consistent and the same speed. Most putts had a lot of break around the hole if not hit at the correct speed. Fairways were very good with very few bare spots. Sand traps were good with nice sand and gave you a chance to get out of them. The tee boxes had plenty of grass on them but many were severely not level. I had to search many of them for a relatively flat spot to tee of from but this was my only gripe about the course.
The course itself is challenging but fair. Off line tee shots still provide a chance for recovery was severely off line shots will find the desert. I think the back nine has more bite to it especially #11 which is a very long par 5 with a difficult tee shot.
The scenery and views around the course are gorgeous. Many of the tee boxes are elevated providing 360* views of Tucson. The 18th hole is worth the price of admission especially if you hit a good tee shot.
The customer service at the course was great. We saw the beverage cart 3 times during the round.
I'm hoping to keep Arizona National in my Tucson rotation.

Scottsdale summer golf

I played Desert Canyon around 1030 on 7/17. GN rate was $35 including range balls. I thought it was a little high but the course conditions made up for it.
I haven't played here in about 5 years and was pleasantly surprised at how well the course looked. The course wasn't in winter conditions but was definitely better taken care of than I can remember in the summers I played.
The course was empty mostly due to the high heat and we were able to get around in about 3.5 hours without setting any speed records.
Tee boxes were mostly good with a couple of the elevated boxes not level. Fairways were in awesome shape with plenty of grass. The greens were a little inconsistent with speed and was hard to get a handle on them. Bunkers were all in good shape with plenty of nice sand.
The course is not overly long but it does have a couple of long, difficult, and uphill holes on the back nine that can be frustrating. Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and eighteen are all uphill with 15 and 18 being a par 4, 13 a par 3, and 14 a par 5. Par is like a birdie and bogey is like a par on these holes. The 16th hole is a fun downhill par 3 with a great view of the surrounding area.
Overall the course is fun and challenging without beating you up too bad. The course is a good summer play if they keep the conditions up the way they were yesterday. The views around the course are beautiful looking over the desert and seeing 4 Peaks and Fountain Hills.

Scottsdale summer golf

I played McDowell Mountain around 1130. The course was basically deserted with only a few singles and a couple of twosomes out. Rate was $26 off GN while the course website was advertising $40.
The driving range has a large movable cover and it was full with young kids getting lessons. The "grass" outside of the cover was thin but I was still able to hit all the shots I wanted.
The greens had been aerated fairly recently and still showed. They didn't putt horribly but weren't completely smooth. The bumps and sand affected a few putts.
Tee boxes were ok with a few not level and/or bumpy. The markers were placed poorly because the course does have large tee boxes. Some of the elevated tee boxes were hard to get a tee in.
The fairways were in awesome shape save for the first tee. The landing area was soggy wet and my tee shot basically plugged and got zero roll. Bad golfing luck but didn't make a good start to the round. Some of the areas around the greens were also soggy wet but overall the course was in excellent condition.
The course is challenging but fair. Tee shots way off line will find desert but the course isn't overly penal. The greenskeeper must have been in a bad mood because many of the pin positions were in difficult spots.
I also like how the course gives multiple tee options. Many times the tips are too long but with MM they provide a combo tee using part of the tips and some of the next tee up.
The staff at MM seem to keep the course up in the summertime after playing it a couple of times last summer and this summer. Crews were working on a large number of bunkers and areas around the greens while I was playing. I thought a couple of the guys had a death wish and didn't want to move as I was waiting to hit. The course seems to be mostly empty during the week and is a good place to get a round in at a good pace.

Awesome summer course

I played Estrella on June 15th at 1143 on their all you can play deal with a sleeve of ProV1s.
The course was in awesome shape for mid July in Arizona. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were all in very good shape. They are not lush and green like they would be in the winter but are more than playable and consistent through the round. Sand traps were also in good shape and all consistent with nice sand.
Pace of play was not an issue because not a lot of people were out playing in the plus 110 degree weather.
The course is a bit of a drive unless you live in the SW valley but definitely worth the extra drive.
