Orange Tree Golf & Conference Resort
Played On 8/4/2013Decent
Orange Tree was in decent shape for this time of year. The fairways and greens were ok but many of the tee boxes on the par 3's were in horrible shape. For a Sunday at 3:30, the course was fairly busy and we were behind a twosome who felt the need to reload on almost every shot the first 4 holes. We finished in just under four hours but it was surprising how busy it was. For $20 in the afternoon, you could do worse than Orange Tree.
Las Sendas Golf Club
Played On 7/19/2013Fun course
First time I've played Las Sendas in a long time and was pleasantly surprised. The course was in great shape for the time of year. The course looks tighter than it really is and makes you think around it a bit especially if you are unfamiliar with the design. Overall, a great time and great rate payed as a hot time.
Poston Butte Golf Club
Played On 6/29/2013Great course
I have been wanting to play Poston Butte since it opened and finally got the chance. It was a 75 minute drive for me. The staff and course were great. The tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers were in great shape. The greens had been aerated recently but they weren't horrible. As the temperature was reaching 118-120 the day I played, the course was mostly empty. The course is a great course, but I'm not sure it is worth the long drive from the northeast valley. It is challenging, well maintained, and fun to play.
Rancho Manana Golf Club
Played On 6/28/2013Great scenery
I haven't played Rancho in years and wanted to play it again. I had forgotten how short this course was. Staff was very friendly and the course was in great shape. The greens were very slow and you had to really hit your putt to get it to the hole. The experience was great; the course is very beautiful and has a great backdrop in the desert. Temperatures were reaching 115-118 that day, so not many people were playing. I would recommend this course to somebody new in the valley, but for the money, more challenging courses exist in the Phoenix area.
McDowell Mountain Golf Club
Played On 6/18/2013Great course
I hadn't played McDowell Mountain in years because of the severe difficulty of the old Sanctuary. They have made vast improvements in the course. It is very playable yet challenging at the same time. The course conditions were very good for this time of year. Fairways were bare in spots as were the greens, but nothing to affect playability. The greens have recently been aerated, but they were in good shape. The greens were consistently receptive to iron and wedge shots. The customer service was top notch. The starter went back to the clubhouse for me to get a yardage book because I hadn't played the course in such an extended amount of time. For the $29 rate I payed, I will definitely be back to the course.
The Phoenician Golf Club
Played On 6/1/2013Great views
Played Oasis/Desert 18. The course was in decent shape for the time of year. The tee boxes were rock hard and difficult to get a tee in the ground on most of the Desert nine. The fairways were in decent shape; mostly dried out but still able to be played off. The greens were pretty hard and you needed to club down in order to keep the ball on the tee. Sand traps had plenty of sand and were nice to hit out of.
My only complaint of the day was pace of play. We teed off at 1306 on a Sunday afternoon. The course was not overly busy, but a threesome was holding up play for the three groups behind them. What should have been a 4 hour round turned into almost a 5 hour round. The marshall was attempting to speed them up, but it wasn't working.
Overall, the Phoenician is a fun course to play. The Oasis nine is straightforward and fairly boring. The Desert nine is fun to play with great views on the side of the mountain.
Copper Canyon Golf Club - Vista/Lake Course
Played On 5/5/2013Fun course
I enjoyed playing Copper Canyon. It was a fun course with some challenging holes and holes requiring to think. The tee boxes were very nice and level. The greens were some of the best I have played all winter. The fairways were in transition, but didn't affect my ability to swing the club. The staff from the cart drop to the end of the round was very friendly. My only complaint was pace of play. We had to wait on each shot. The marshall was attempting to speed up play, but the course had let two fivesomes go early in the day and slow play down. All in all, it was a fun course and I will be back.
Wigwam Resort - Red Course
Played On 4/21/2013Fun Course
The Wigwam Red is one of my favorite courses. It is has enough length to make it challenging. The last three holes can be round killers. The conditions of the course were fair. The greens were in great shape as well as the tee boxes. The fairways had some bare spots, but nothing to affect a shot. Pace of play was an issue, but the course was busy. I will be back again.
Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
Played On 4/18/2013Decent course
This was the first time I have played HIllcrest, and probably the last. The course had a decent driving range and putting/chipping area. The staff I encountered was very friendly. The golf course itself could be a lot better if the conditions were improved. The course seemed damp in many spots. Many of the holes were fun and challenging, but some of the shorter holes seemed to be tricked up to make them harder. The greens on the front nine were decent but the back nine was pretty pathetic. The speed difference between the two was considerable. The tee boxes were in decent shape with a couple of exceptions. The bunkers were not very good. Most of the pin locations were ok except for 18. The hole was literally cut on a downsplope and made it nearly impossible to make any kind of decent putt. Overall, I feel better courses exist at the price point they are charging.
Union Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 3/21/2013Fun Course
This was the first time I played UHCC. The customer service was fantastic from the cart pickup in the parking lot to the golf shop attendant. Range balls are included in the rate and is a great amenity. The course itself is fun and different from many Phoenix area courses. The fairways are tree lined requiring you to be in the fairway. The fairways were a bit shaggy and the rough was nonexistent, but overall playing conditions were good. The greens were in great shape and rolled very good throughout the day. Some of the tee boxes, especially on the par threes, needed some attention but it didn't affect the round. Overall, for the price and location, the course is a great choice to make. I did not see a beverage cart during the round, but it wasn't a big deal for me. I will definitely be coming back to play.
Sundance Golf Club
Played On 2/11/2013Value course
Sundance is a great place to play in wintertime. The only negative of the day was waiting on nearly every hole to tee off. The course itself is very fun and challenges you if you are not in the fairway. The tee boxes were in good shape. The fairways were good as were the greens.
Club West Golf Club
Played On 1/13/2013Great course
This is the first time I have played Club West since the renovation. I got a Hot Time deal and only payed $40 for an 0815 tee time. This is one of my favorite courses and it was a great time. We were one of the first groups out and flew around the course in around 4 hours. The condition of the course was decent, $40-$50 good, not $75 great. The course itself is a great layout with a good mix of holes. I will definitely be back to play again.
Coldwater Golf Club
Played On 12/21/2012Great Value
This is the second time during fall/winter I have played Coldwater. They had a short frost delay but was one of the first five groups out on the course and pace of play was good. For the price, the course is in very good condition. It is a great value during the peak season and worth a drive to play. I will definitely be back again.
Villa de Paz Golf Course
Played On 11/4/2012Good peak season course.
Villa was in the best shape I have seen in the winter. It is not an overly challenging course but worth it to play with the lower rates. The finishing three holes are very challenging and can make or break your round. Greens were in good condition as were the fairways and tee boxes.
