Welshpool Golf Club
Played On 05/29/2023Love this course
If you enjoy a warm welcome at a hilltop course with great views and greens you’ll love Welshpool. Prepare for a long haul uphill after you’ve played the second as 3 & 4 will give you that and from experience, long on 4 is no good!
The 12th, which used to be the 18th, is a spectacular par 4 down across a valley to a fairway that runs almost perpendicular to the tee shot.
We played after some lovely spring weather so as well as being windy it was hard and fast, a real challenge.

Played On 04/07/2023What a Great Course
The road up to the course is mighty steep, which is usually a good sign for a hill top lover and this course does not disappoint. Cracking views of mountains and sea.
A fantastic James Braid hilltop layout with some highly imaginative holes. This is quite an arduous walk but the rewards are well worth it. We got lost twice where a sign would have helped and the slow greens took some time to get used to but overall this was a hugely enjoyable and challenging experience that I would have no problem recommending to anyone.
Penrhos Golf and Country Club
Played On 04/03/2023Penrhos in early April
Obviously a littler wet given the weather lately but course held up well in good condition. The first two holes are straight uphill then respite on 3rd before going up again. The course is well laid out with some interesting holes and sea views once you get on to the back nine.
My only criticism is that when we arrived at 10 there was no breakfast available as this is apparently only served to hotel guests until 10. There was a menu on the bar but this was for lunch/dinner food that didn’t seem appropriate. By the time we finished around 2 oddly there was another menu but this was brunch and light bites, which might have been better earlier on.
We had the course pretty much to ourselves, which was nice and no issues finding our way around.
Enjoyed the day and would recommend playing if in the area as it’s a really good set up. Looks like an island green might be coming for the 17th too, which is a severely downhill par 3.

Front nine parkland nice but not my thing. Back nine stunning links. Pro and bar staff very friendly and food was excellent. Very wet after a lot of rain, bunkers full of water but nothing you can do about that. Stand in 12 the tee and tell me you haven’t made the right decision to come here to play…I challenge you!

Played On 10/23/2023Play if only for the 6th
Tha large and imposing clubhouse viewed from the drive in is a little flattering because once you get inside it looks a little dated. The pro shop is not massively stocked but they did have a choice of old push trolleys, which were free or electric motokaddy trolleys for hire at £15. There is a range, chipping area and putting green for pre course prep. We had been placed behind a ladies 4 ball on the start sheet but they very kindly let us go first, which was a lovely gesture.
The course itself is well presented and dry in spite of the mountains of rain we have had lately so that was great and the greens are firm, true but a little patchy, rolled nicely though. There are a few truly memorable holes to look forward to namely, for me, the 6th which is a short par 3 off the top of a hill with the coast path and sea to the left, spectacular. The 7th is a drivable par 4 back up the hill and the 16th stands out, a long par 5 with some fantastic undulations. The rest of the course is a little samey in my opinion, typical of seaside golf and because of this I struggled at the end to remember all the holes.
I’d definitely play again if in the area and enjoyed the day plus the views are spectacular.

Played On 11/04/2022Great Set Up
Delighted with conditions in spite of a lot of rain over the past week. The course is quite long but has a wide range of tees to suit everyone. I chose the tees that led me in to most fairway bunkers, which was an error. Greens are terrific with huge undulations. The food and drinks were good but pretty pricey imo.

Played On 08/09/2022Tough but Great
The welcome in the Pro shop was excellent and the young man came outside to show us where everything was, he also gave us free trolleys, which was a bonus. The course is upland and heathy with plenty of ferns and gorse to claim your ball if you’re wayward but there are no weak holes in my opinion and the greens are both tricky and in outstanding condition, as we’re the bunkers. We shared the course with sheep and horses, which was great and all the greens are fenced off to protect them, which we have come across before and caused no issues whatsoever. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone in the area and commend the members we met for their friendliness.
Plassey Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2022Short but a real cracker
There is quite honestly not a weak hole here although you probably won’t need to pack the driver. If you’re straight and your short game is good you’ll murder the course but if not you may rack up a number.
The course is well laid out, hilly and the greens are both excellent and very challenging.
The course is part of a holiday site but please don’t be put off by this as my expectations were low and I was hugely surprised and impressed.
I will definitely be back there.

Great course played on a steamy hot day in July. Greens are in perfect condition with plenty of slopes as you’d expect. Some cracking views and well thought out holes. I’ll definitely be back to play here again and other courses in the area.

Played On 07/03/2022A day on the coast
Looks the part from the drive in. Great breakfast and friendly/helpful in the Pro shop. Course pretty flat and uninspiring but gets more interesting on the back nine. Got stuck behind a society so 4 hours 40 for a two ball, which is way too long for me. Felt £45 was £15 too much for this course tbh but in spite of the cost and slow pace I did enjoy the day at the coast. No sea views though I’m afraid.
Holyhead Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2022Cracking Course
Really enjoyed the day at Holyhead in spite of sacrificing several balls to the gorse. Great layout, fast and sloping greens, staff friendly and helpful plus the weather couldn’t have been better. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

Excellent afternoon battling the elements on this fabulous course. Highly recommended if you’re in the area but bring a good set of lungs.

It’s all dead uphill to the 4th tee and I mean proper uphill with three par 3s to get you up. Once you are up the scenery is magnificent, the course is well conditioned and a great lay out. Watch out for the wind though.

Hit a lot of drivers and found the greens very challenging but layout is great in spite of the last three holes being all uphill. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In spite of biblical weather lately the greens were exceptional and whilst the course was very wet in places overall totally playable and very enjoyable
Llanymynech Golf Club

Excellent hill course on Shropshire/Wales border where Ian Woosnam learned his trade. Played November and greens were as good as I’ve played for ages. Cracking layout but if you’re not straight you will lose balls so bring plenty. Members and Pro very friendly.

Good course, fast pace, warm up on the range, a well stocked shop and decent food after. All good thanks.
Telford Hotel & Golf Resort
Played On 10/10/2021Slow but enjoyable
4 and a half hours for a two ball is pushing it a bit I’m afraid. Course good but too slow again. I suppose it’s a resort course but even so somewhat spoiled the experience.
Layouts is good and challenging with some interesting holes and contouring on the greens.
