Waikoloa Village Golf Club
Played On 04/19/2024No complaints
Played 4/19 in the morning. Course was in pretty good condition all around. Greens seemed to have a mix of two grass types but putted fine. Can’t really think of anything to complain about. Pace was good, we ran into some maintenance folks who kindly stepped aside for us. The elevation changes and thick bladed rough add challenge to the course, but it tends to be pretty wide and forgiving otherwise. Tourist rate (about $140 with tax) was no bargain but the course was in better condition than some other local ones that charge a little less.
Union Hills Golf & Country Club
Played On 04/07/2024Much improved
Conditions here are much improved over previous winters. Fairways have great grass coverage, rough isn’t total dirt hard pan like it used to be, green side bunkers have more sand and it looks like they are getting ready to re-do some of the fairway bunkers. Course played nice and firm and the ball rolled well. Only minor issue is what I’m guessing are some small tufts of poa grass on the overseeded rye greens particularly on the back nine that can slightly throw off putts.
Overall I was very pleased. Good value for the money with the SwingFirst discount card. Dan in the pro shop was friendly and helpful too.
Coyote Lakes Golf Club
Played On 04/06/2024Good conditions
Course conditions were great, no complaints. Fairways were plush but the ball rolled out. Greens had no problem areas and rolled quick once the morning dew dried off. Overseeded rough instead of dormant Bermuda. Probably the best conditions now at this course all winter. Maintenance staff has been doing a great job despite how much play and cart traffic this course gets. Rack rate is high for this course and location but fair with their SwingFirst discount card.
Prescott Golf Club
Played On 02/24/2024Glad I tried it
Not the most difficult course around, but enjoyable to play and won’t beat you up. Excellent conditions other than some of the bunkers. Great greens. I felt it was a good value for money. Course was busy but our foursome finished in less than 4 hours which was appreciated. All staff encountered were pleasant, especially the woman in the snack shack.
Championship at Viewpoint Golf Resort
Played On 12/16/2023Great value
Course was in fine condition, played firm with great rollout on drives. Fast smooth greens. I was impressed with the good value for $63 given how overpriced every other course in the east valley is now. Played early and finished in well under 4 hours. Will be back for sure.
Coyote Lakes Golf Club
Played On 10/07/2023Nice overseed
The overseed came in great. The greens were slow as one would expect, but the fairways, tees, and rough were cut down to an appropriate level and weren’t soaking wet. CPO but finished in a hair under 4 hours for an early round. Keep up the good work, Coyote Lakes.
Skippack Golf Course
Played On 08/14/2023Good value
Course was in great condition all around, except for unrepaired ballmarks from lazy golfers. Bunker sand appears to have been recently replenished with good quality stuff. Good value for the price. Got around on a weekday morning in less than 4 hours. Course is short overall on the scorecard but elevation changes, side hill lies, some long par 3’s, and sloped greens make it a fun challenge. I’ll be back. Only thing I can fault it for is that the blue and white tees have very little difference between them on almost all holes.
Spring Hollow Golf Course
Played On 08/13/2023Good experience
Played early on a weekend morning. Course was in excellent condition all around and seemed to have drained well from recent rains. Pace was good, kudos to management for using 10 minute intervals. Friendly staff. The course layout was a mixed bag, some interesting holes and a few repetitive short par 4’s. Course isn’t long but has some tricky slopes on the greens and some severe uphill shots and challenging blind shots to make up for it. The white markers were set far forward of the scorecard yardage on many holes so you could get away with some weak tee shots. Overall it is a very picturesque property in great shape that seems well run and I would recommend giving it a try. There are cheaper courses around but this one is in much better condition.
Neshaminy Valley Golf Club
Played On 08/10/2023Meh
Layout is fairly easy and friendly towards lesser skilled players and seniors. A few interesting holes but mostly forgettable. Yellow tee markers were put at the red tee yardages on the scorecard on many holes. Course routing makes it easy to skip around if you get stuck behind a slow group with nobody in front of them, which we did as we were trying to beat the rain. Course is relatively easy to walk with a few minor hills. Pushcarts are available.
Greens were very slow and soft, seemed like several different types of grass on many of them and they just rolled inconsistently. Hole 6 has a temporary green mowed in the fairway in use. Fairways and rough were pretty good. Tees mostly ok, some very hard, some on the back nine had some thick crabgrass type stuff growing on them.
The rate was good given the location but I’d probably only play this again if I lived nearby and couldn’t get a tee time at Bucks Club or Five Ponds which cost more but have better conditions.
Hillcrest Golf Club at Sun City West
Played On 05/06/2023Good value
Fairways and greens were in great condition. I always enjoy this layout so I’m glad to see better conditions than the last time I played it a year or so ago. Older gent in the pro shop was very helpful and got me out a bit early with another single who was excellent company. I thought $48 for a weekend morning round was a great price for this course.
Royal Kunia Country Club
Played On 03/27/2023My new favorite course on the island
Good layout on a great piece of land for golf with good views. Don’t judge it from the vibe you get when you pull in and see the tired looking trailer clubhouse. Excellent course conditions all around. Course drains well and played somewhat firm despite recent rains. Greens look like they had a verticut done a couple weeks ago but putted fine. Maintenance staff were courteous and would move aside or wave me up when I caught up with them.
Only negative was the old gas cart was noisy and chuggy with a non functioning parking brake, so I had to steer it into hills or curbs to keep it from rolling away when parked.
Not cheap for tourists like me, but I enjoyed it enough that I would definitely come back.
Royal Hawaiian Golf Club
Played On 03/26/2023No advance warning on greens aeration
Incredible, one of a kind setting made up for the conditions. Greens were very recently punched and heavily sanded, front nine worse than the back. Spotty/inconsistent fairways from one hole to the next. Hole 14 (par 5) was closed so played “3-B”, a medium length par 3 to make 18 holes. Had no warning about the greens aeration until the starter told me, right after I paid full price. Starter was very helpful explaining the property layout and got me out early as a single as I had one of the first few tee times.
Ewa Beach Golf Club
Played On 03/24/2023Good conditions
Played early Friday afternoon. Got around in a little over 4 hours which was a nice surprise as the course was busy and I was prepared for the worst based on other reviews, Course was in great condition all around, no complaints. Really enjoyed the layout, I’ll be back.
Golf Summerlin - Eagle Crest Course
Played On 02/11/2023Expensive for tourists but worth it
I’ve played hundreds of courses and this is the most fun course I’ve ever played under 5000 yards. Lots of elevation changes, challenging greens, good views of the valley, used every club in my bag. Course played nice and firm but the greens held shots. Great conditions all around, I was impressed. Tourist greens fees here are pretty ridiculous but it ended up being worth it in the end. Course was busy, waited a lot but finished in about 3 hours as a threesome.
Desert Dunes Golf Course
Played On 01/21/2023Set your expectations properly
Played here on a beautiful non-windy day for about $59. Check in took a while because the register didn’t have change for $100, then they were out of carts and had to wait for one to come in and get cleaned.
Fairways had acceptable grass coverage for a value course and played nice and firm. Some tees needed mowing. Greens were not good, kinda bumpy with what appeared like several competing tufts of grass types on most, a few had bare spots. The bunkers I was in had decent sand but others had major water puddles.
Pace of play was poor and on track for 4:45, waited on every shot, a full tee sheet at 8 minute intervals pretty much guaranteed this. Only got 17 holes in on a 12:40 tee time.
It’s a fun, unique layout for the area. The price is fair given the conditions and it’s one of the cheapest full length courses in the area during winter. Just don’t expect pristine conditions or a well managed pace like you are at some nice resort, because you aren’t paying for it.
Quarry Pines Golf Club
Played On 04/30/2023First timer
Course was in excellent condition all around. Really enjoyed the layout, challenging but fair. A short straight hitter can score well here from the black tees. Friendly staff especially the guy working the cart staging area early AM who was very helpful.
Hawaii Country Club
Played On 03/25/2023Fair value If you set expectations right
This is the cheapest 18 hole course on the island for a non-resident, for a reason. The conditions are what you might find at a typical rural course on the mainland that runs on a shoestring budget. Super Slow/shaggy greens, patchy fairways you can lose a ball in that have more weeds than grass, goofy but kinda fun layout, etc.
That all being said, it’s a good cheap place for a beginner to play without pressure, or a place for a visitor on a budget to shake off the rust before moving on to nicer courses.
The ranger was a friendly guy and the woman in the shop was as nice as could be.
Set your expectations correctly going in and it can be fun.
Hawaii Prince Golf Club - A/B Nines
Played On 03/29/2023Hawaii Prince
Played this course for the first time early afternoon on a weekday, the A and C nines at this 27 hole facility. Course is visually in excellent condition although the greens are a little slow compared to other courses in the area, and there wasn’t much roll in the fairways. Everything played very soft/plush, which maybe some people like but it isn’t my preference. Course wasn’t packed and I finished in less than 4 hours. Not the most interesting or memorable course around, but a solid choice.
Primm Valley Golf Club - Lakes Course
Played On 02/13/2023Great layout worth the drive
I really enjoyed this course. Great layout that was worth the drive. Greens on the Lakes course are recovering from some major problems so expect some large sanded areas and slow speed, some worse than others. The fairways are in good shape and play fast and firm. Tees and bunkers were in good condition. Staff was great and course wasn’t crowded so I flew around quick.
Desert Willow Golf Course
Played On 02/12/2023Great experience
Played early Sunday afternoon with another single in less than 3 hours despite the course being busy. Quick thinking starter helped me avoid an awkward pairing. Course conditions were good all around. Nothing to complain about other than unfixed ballmarks from lazy golfers. Enjoyable par 60 layout has some interesting greens and several par 4 driver holes. This is a steal for $37 right now.
