Stonewall Golf Club at Lake Manassas
Played On 07/06/2016An enjoyable round
We were visiting from out of town and played with friends from the area who knew the course. We were greeted promptly by the staff and checked in and sent on our way very efficiently. Range was OK, but used mats. Large practice green. Course itself is treelined with lots of elevation changes. Very scenic along Lake Manassas. We ate in the grill after the round and the food was good with good service.
Ardea Country Club - South Course
Played On 06/24/2016Hit It Straight!
Played the North Course on a warm and humid June morning, just a few days before they will aerify the greens. Course was in excellent shape - fairways, greens, bunkers, and everything. Not terribly long, but challenging. The biggest thing is you need to be able to hit it straight. I think 14 out of the 18 holes have water in play. even without the water, the fairways are pretty skinny due to the number and proximity of trees. It's probably not much fun to play if you're hitting it crooked. Good day, friendly staff, enjoyed the course. Recommend.
The Hills of Lakeway Country Club - Flintrock Falls Course
Played On 06/16/2016Enjoyed The Day (after we found the course)
A Nicklaus-designed course in the hills near Lake Travis. Challenging layout. There are several holes that you need to see to figure out (when you're done, you say "I would have played that different if I knew"). They have a 'cheat sheet' available in the pro shop with hints for each course. Some of it was helpful, some not so much. We very much enjoyed the round and would definitely play again (and would probably play better,, having seen the holes). Note - NO DRIVING RANGE. They have some hitting bays with mats and nets, but that's it. They 'share' a driving range with the other course - of course, the driving range is at the other course :-( Also, this is one of two courses at the Hills CC. They are NOT located together. Don't follow instructions to Hills CC. You have to specifically search for Flintrock Falls.
Anthem Golf & Country Club - Ironwood Course
Played On 01/19/2016Not long, but challenging
Visiting the area and played through my Clubcorp membership. Really enjoyed the round. Course in excellent shape. Looks like they overseeded tees, greens, and rough, but not fairways. Fairways were dormant bermuda with good coverage. Huge greens, with a LOT of ridges and undulations. The posted sign said the stimp was 10.9 and it felt like it. That means you are left with a LOT of long puts with multiple breaks. Spend some time on the practice green to get the pace down. Some blind shots off the tee - I'll play better the next time.
If I have a complaint it is that you can't always see where you're going or hitting off the tees (blind shots or hidden hazards). No hole maps or diagrams on the scorecard or on the hole markers on the course. Unless you play with a local member, you are going to be at a serious disadvantage. Suggest the course do something to help folks who are strangers on the course have a clue about where and how far to hit the ball.
Enjoyed the round and would play again if in the area.
Kiahuna Golf Club
Played On 01/10/2016Good, but not great
Although we've been to Kauai a lot, this was our first time playing Kiahuna. It was a good experience, but not great. It was like a good municipal. They are offering a special for $95. That includes golf and cart with GPS. This would not be a $95 course anywhere else but Kauai. Note-that does not include range balls-those are extra. Course in good shape, wide open. Nothing complicated. Par 70 - only 1 Par 5 on each side. A good course to shake off the stiffness from travel, but not the best on the island.
Dogwood at Marriott's Grand Hotel & Lakewood Golf Club
Played On 10/05/2015Our Favorite Round for the Trip
We were visiting for a family wedding. Played Magnolia Grove, Rock Creek, and this course. It was our favorite of the 3. Front nine (lots of water, wetlands, hazards) very different from back nine (lots of trees, park-like setting). Staff very friendly. Good pace of play - especially for a resort course. We would play here again if we could - can't wait to try the Azalea course when we return.
Rock Creek Golf Club
Played On 10/03/2015Good Golf and a Great Value!
Played here on a Saturday morning before college football. They had a "Pregame Shotgun" intended to get everyone done in time to see the games on TV. For $59 each we got a hot breakfast burrito, the round of golf, cart, range, and a steak lunch. On top of that, because it was cart path only due to overseeding, we got a free round of golf in the future just for behaving ourselves and staying off the grass! Staff was friendly. Facilities very good. Enjoyed the golf course. Lots of elevations changes and the greens were tough. We had fun and would return - the value received for the price paid was awesome!
Magnolia Grove Golf Club - Falls Course
Played On 10/01/2015First RTJ Golf Trail Experience - A Good One
Played here a few days after they almost got washed away with 11" of rain over 2 days. The course was in pretty good shape, although some of the bunkers - especially on the back nine - were still in pretty rough shape. Enjoyed the course. Moderately challenging. Grill staff and starter were great. Pro shop staff and bag drop acted like we were an interruption to their day instead of customers. Paul, the GM, came through when we left an item behind. He tracked it down and got it back to us. Thank you! Recommend if in the area.
