Montauk Downs State Park
Played On 06/24/2022Highly Recommend
Montauk Downs was phenomenal, checked all the boxes:
- Great condition
- Great value for the money ($91 non-resident on a Friday, would pay that over and over)
- Fun, tough design with firm greens
- Scenic walk through east LI
- Bomb bacon, egg and cheese on a roll with hot sauce, frigid beers.
Book it, can’t miss.
Indian Palms Golf & Country Club - Indian/Mountain
Played On 07/21/2021Goat Track
Ownership is absolutely letting the place fall to pieces. Staff was very friendly but the course was brutal. I play a wide range of courses and I’m realistic about what to expect for what you pay, but this place wasn’t even worth the $35 off-season rate. Look elsewhere.
Tijeras Creek Golf Club
Played On 12/12/2020Fun Course, Two Different 9's
First time playing driving down from LA, definitely want to come back after leaving a few too many strokes out there. Carts don't have GPS in them so highly recommend scoping each hole on whatever golf app you use to figure out the right landing areas. Challenging course where you need to be locked in the whole way.
Two knocks on the course though. For the rate, you'd expect better maintained tee boxes and fairway conditions. Been a month+ since punch/over-seed and the fairways are still hard with brown spots. The other is that warm-up balls should be included at this price point.
Angeles National Golf Club
Played On 11/28/2020Fairways and Greens Like Stone
Love this course and I know the ground firms up this time of year but it was super dried out. Driving the ball was fun but that was about it. Impossible to hold greens and putting was a joke. You'd think with their recent price increase from $130 to $156 they could afford to put a bit more water down.
El Dorado Park Golf Club
Played On 06/13/2020Solid Layout, Poor Value
First time playing El Dorado and we teed off @ 6am on a Saturday. Pace of play was great (<4hrs with three players) and the layout/greens were solid. But for $71 with cart, I was hoping for better overall conditions than what I can get for $50 playing an LA City muni track. Bring the greens fees down or improve the course conditions, especially in the fairway/first cut of rough and the bunkers.
Oak Quarry Golf Club
Played On 05/09/2020Fun Track, Good Condition, Poor Value
Oak Quarry had been on the list for years, happy to finally check it off. 6:30a tee time on a Saturday and we finished in just over 4 hours. Fun track, great views, good condition in general (greens could be rolled a bit but all good considering it was shuttered for 6 weeks). Honestly, only issue was that $137 felt a little steep. That’s PGA West $$ and it’s not that experience. If it was $100, wouldn’t have a bad thing to say about it.
Coyote Hills Golf Course
Played On 02/08/2020Fun Track; Tee Boxes & Greens Need Some Love
Played this course many times, one of the better layouts in SoCal. The tee boxes and greens were in pretty tough shape. Tee boxes need to be re-sodded with a lot of dirt showing and the greens had a lot of pock marks with sand fill. Fairways were hard and fast but to be expected in February in California. Would like to see the greens and tee boxes in better shape when I'm paying almost $100 for the round.
Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort - Eisenhower Course
Played On 05/10/2020Tough, tough track
Always love playing the Ike but it was punishing especially being rusty after a few months off. Great conditions, we played in 4 hours, just wish I didn’t leave so many strokes out there.
Olivas Links Golf Course
Played On 01/15/2017Great course, highly recommend
Great course, great condition. We had to deal with some sogginess due to the amount of rain over the last week but course was in good shape even those the grass is dormant right now. I've played just about everywhere in the greater LA area and Olivas is probably Top 3 on the quality/design/value ranking.
Only complaint is that I don't live closer. Would play regularly
Candlewood Country Club
Played On 12/11/2016Decent Course, OK Condition, Good Value
The good:
- Pace: Sunday 12:30p tee time and we flew around the course, finishing in 4 hours.
- Layout: decent, challenging for a mid-handicapper
- Golfboards you can rent; costs more ($22 per) but very fun
- Value: GN hot deal for $36
The bad:
- Condition: You can tell the course is in tough; greens and fairways mostly green but plenty of rough areas/GUR
Overall:
- Would play again if in the $40-50 range; not worth the 35-40 min drive if more
The Golf Club at Rancho California
Played On 07/17/2016Fun Course, Great Pace
Played many courses in Temecula area (Redhawk, TCI, Journey, Temeku) and the GC@RC was a great experience, ticking pretty much all of the boxes.
Condition: greens in great shape and fairways mostly green/soft through-out.
Pace: 3.75hrs teeing off at 6:45a on a Sunday
Value: ~$50 on the weekend for a quality track in decent shape
Challenge: RTJ course so there's plenty
Would go back and would recommend.
Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Resort - Zaharias Course
Played On 04/08/2016Best Course in SoCal under $100
Disclaimer: Was able to get a tee time for $70 on a Friday through GolfNow; rack rate is $110 on the weekend in the morning.
Man, I haven't played a course that green and lush in SoCal in years. Course is in excellent shape, played at a decent pace (somehow the twosome in front of our threesome was holding us up...) and a challenging lay-out. 100% coming back.
Strawberry Farms Golf Club
Played On 04/03/2016Punched greens, No warning
Man, there's nothing more frustrating than booking a round at a nicer course, driving an hour and then only finding out about the punched greens as you walk on to the first green.
Since this is the third or fourth time that GolfNow (and the subsequent course) has failed to use their "Aerated Greens" alert, maybe it's on me for not calling ahead to every course I'm interested in booking to check the status of the greens. Seems like we should be able to address this issue since, you know, it's 2016 and we have the technology.
The course itself was in decent shape but dried out, which is to be expected right now.
Penmar Golf Course
Played On 06/20/2015Convenient Muni
Tee time was 9am on a Saturday, got around in just under 2.5 which is about right for this course.
West-side locals know all this but if you haven't played it before, it's a good spot to get out and just tee it up. Not a lot of challenges and good for beginners. If you can get around alright, it's a good spot to work on your game while playing 9 since most local driving ranges have you hitting off mats.
Pace of play can be slow so if that drives you crazy, head elsewhere. Otherwise, crack a beer, enjoy the breeze and be happy you're on a golf course.
Hidden Valley Golf Club
Played On 06/13/2015Fun Course, Good Condition
Tee'd off at 8:40am on a Saturday. Tee time was 9am but since I was a single, the staff helped to get me out with an earlier group.
Pace of play was good, finished in about 4.5 and that was with the group ahead that was struggling to advance the ball. Course is currently in great shape, green fairways and rough, and the greens were in good shape (though a little spongy). If the greens were firmed up a bit, they would have been great. Enjoyed the design, small misses didn't kill you and good shots were rewarded. The par 4's are generally short but the elevation changes and hazards force you to be intentional with your shots.
If you live within 30-40 mins, I'd say it's worth the trip. Good value for the money and $2.50 beers are icing on the cake.
Sand Canyon Country Club
Played On 06/07/2015Drought Obvious on Mountain Course
One of my favorite golf clubs in the LA area but taking a pounding from the drought. The Mountain Course fairways are basically just hard-pack dry dirt; Valley looked like it was getting a little more love. Greens were still in good shape. RR might want to consider going down to one track and focusing their water use while the drought persists...
Number One at Brookside Golf Club
Played On 03/08/2015Played Noy; short in yardage with tough greens
Typical public/muni course with regard to condition and pace of play. What the course lacks in yardage, it makes up for it with tough greens and decent bunker layout. Slow pace but not a bad way to spend a Sunday for $42.
Oak Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/16/2015Tough course, tougher greens.
Course was in great shape but very challenging and it will beat you up if you don't bring your A game. Not good enough to just hit greens, you really have to hit your spots if you don't want to three putt.
Balboa at Sepulveda Golf Complex
Played On 01/04/2015Fun course, surprisingly good greens
5 hour round teeing off at 10am on a Sunday. Course was in OK shape but the greens were surprisingly nice. Limited ball marks and speedy; generally in great shape. Not bad for an LA muni.
Coyote Hills Golf Course
Played On 10/04/2014Fun Track, Great Pace
First time playing Coyote and had a good time out there. The course was a bit dry and the greens had recently been aerated but generally no complaints. Plays short from the blues and the mid-handicapper or better would probably enjoy playing from the tips (I will the next time I play). Teed off at 7:20am and wrapped at 11:30am. We probably could have finished faster if we didn't leave so many strokes out there.
Breakfast burrito was excellent; hot and ready when you order.
