Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 05/23/2023Yikes
First time playing here. Course is in pretty terrible shape. Tee boxes shaggy, fairways bare and muddy or long where there is grass. I'm honestly shocked they're open and charging what they're charging. The greens were receptive and rolled well, but needed to be rolled.
If you don't mind moving your ball to nearby grass when you find a bare spot (which you will on every hole) it's playable.
Tuscany Falls at PebbleCreek - East Course
Played On 09/10/2022Boring
I found this course to be incredibly boring. Each hole is basically the same; generous fairway with one bunker on each side and a bunker around the green. Greens were super slow and had some cuts in them. They seemed to put the flags in the only burnt/cut areas of the greens. No cart girl and the food service on the turn was very slow, we waited 10 minutes before giving up. Better options nearby unfortunately.

Course is in better shape than last summer. Greens very slow and sandy but they looked like they'd been punched in the last week or two. They rolled well enough to not detract too much. Bunkers are basically concrete with an occasional rock at this point. If you can play for less than 20 or 30 bucks (summer) the layout is worth the trip despite the lackluster conditions.
Wigwam Resort - Red Course
Played On 05/21/2022Transition
Everyone complaining about the bare spots on the course are being a bit dramatic. It's May, the courses are in transition. Find a bare lie in the fairway? Move your ball to some grass, this isn't the PGA tour. The greens had a bare spot here and there but they did a decent job keeping the pins away from the bad spots. Layout is OK, nothing special. Pin placements were often just a few paces from the fringe. Relatively flat greens. Wouldn't pay to play here in prime season but if you can get a deal it's worth it.

This course is in good shape considering the time of year and it's age. Most of the course was very firm but there are some wet muddy spots around the greens due to the collection areas. Nothing out of the ordinary for the time of year. Greens have massive movement and really punish you if you find the wrong side. I thought the layout was OK, a little uninspiring from a compete from scratch design. Very little elevation change. There are a few tricky drives but for the most part this is a second shot golf course.

I stayed away from this course last summer because it just wasn't up to par with other courses in the area as far as course conditions. Happy to say the course was in excellent shape today, few bare spots here and there ok the fairways but the greens were in good shape for this time of year. My only gripe would be the sand traps, they were really compacted and could use either more sand or just a good fluff. Excited to play here this summer.
Wigwam Resort - Red Course
Played On 12/16/2018Best of the Bunch
I've played all three of the Wigwam courses once now, and this is my favorite. The layout was the most interesting and from the tips it's a comfortable distance for someone of my skill level (mid 80s). The greens have a lot of subtle breaks and the bunkers are well placed. That being said, the bunkers have zero and I mean zero sand in them, which was a bit of a shock considering the fluffy white sand bunkers on the other two courses. There was also a lot of standing water in the fairways, and it hasn't rained in a while. If I play the wigwam again this will be the course I'll play, but there's better courses in the west valley for the same money.
Golf Club of Estrella
Played On 09/21/2018Course was in great shape as always. Really is one of the best layouts in the west valley. Bunkers have decent sized rocks in them, could use a little TLC.

I live around this course but don't play here very often. In the summer there are better deals at much nicer courses (Estrella, Verrado). Fairways and greens were in reasonable shape today for the time of year, few bare spots here and there. The tee boxes were absolutely terrible; bare, weeds, uneven. Pace of play was good. Course is short and pretty straightforward, the uneven lies and tricky greens make it somewhat challenging.
Quintero Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2018Best in the West
Quintero was the last "west valley" course I needed to try and it did not disappoint. The greens are shockingly good for this time of year and the fairways had very minimal burned spots. This golf course is a second shot course, the fairways are wide and forgiving but you better be precise with your approach. Great layout with a few very elevated par 3s. If I had to give some criticism it would be the bunkers. They had some decent sized pebbles in them and could use some more sand. Also this course is in the middle of nowhere, so plan accordingly. Will absolutely be back.
Verrado Golf Club - Victory Course
Played On 06/24/2018What a difference
I played this course about a month ago and the greens were not in good shape, very shaggy, lots of burned spots. They were in much better condition this time around, actually playable. They're still a little long and slow but that's to be expected for this time of year.
This course is great, very scenic and challenging. There's a par 5 on the front which is long and always into the wind, takes 3 great shots to have a chance for bird.
This course could really benefit from GPS on the carts. It's a little strange that this is positioned, at least price wise to be the better of the two Verrado courses, yet the founders has GPS. There's a lot of blind shots, forced carries and fairway bunkers that would be nice to know what it is to carry/reach, etc. Will absolutely be back.
Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia
Played On 06/17/2018Disappointed
I heard and read good things about this course and I was excited to play it with its long native grass. Unfortunately all the grass had been cut down so it looked like a regular course. Tee boxes were in bad shape but the rest of the course was in good shape considering the time of year. Was told when I got there that they'd bring me a cart when one became available but I had to walk back up from the putting green to ask again for one. First box had 3 groups waiting with no starter. GPS on our cart wasn't working.
The layout is fun and you need to be hitting your driver straight but I think the course loses its bite without the grass.
Verrado Golf Club - Victory Course
Played On 05/24/2018Slow Greens
This course is great. Awesome layout, lots of visually intimidating holes. Nice soft white sand in the bunkers. The only letdown, and it's a big one, are the greens. I read that they were punched about a month ago but they are still in fairly terrible shape. Very slow, with lots of burnt bare spots. Hopefully it gets better as the course matures.
Verrado Golf Club - Founders Course
Played On 05/20/2018Excellent
Third time playing here. Layout is excellent. Course was freshly punched, but the greens were in reasonable shape considering, the lack of pace was welcome. Bunkers had nice fluffy sand which is rare in the valley (looking at you, Estrella). I'd play here every weekend if the green fees were a little more reasonable.
Golf Club of Estrella
Played On 05/12/2018Great layout, bunkers need sand
This is my second time playing this course, and second review. It was in much better shape this time around, greens rolled true and fairways were nice. There was a few burned spots in the fairways but that's to be expected this time of year. My major gripe with this course is the condition of the bunkers. There is little to no sand in them and quite a few ping pong ball sized rocks.
Great layout though, this course will take your lunch money if you're not getting off the tee well.
Golf Club of Estrella
Played On 03/22/2018Doesn't stand up to the hype
I've heard nothing but great things about this course, so I was expecting a great experience, it doesn't quite live up to my expectations. I'll start off by saying that the layout of this course is excellent. Shot placement is key here. Pins were fair to challenging, with a few sucker pins thrown in the mix. Pace of play was excellent, started at 3pm and snuck in just before sunset at 645.
My gripe with this course was the overall condition. The fairways and tees were about the only parts of the course which justify its price. The rough was matted down and hard, making it not any more difficult than the fairway. Fringes were growing into the green surface. Greens were full of pitch marks and a few bare spots here and there. In desperate need of a good roll. Bunkers have a very shallow base and are full of small pebbles. The biggest let down was the rough around the greens, there's a hole on the front with a lake in front of the green, there was huge bare spots of basically dirt behind the green in between the bunkers.
Overall I'd say it's worth it if you can get a twilight rate <$40, but it's not worth much more in its current condition. The Verrado courses are far an away in better condition.
Willowcreek Golf Course
Played On 02/04/2018Standard Sun City
Course was in great condition, as expected for this time of year. Layout is pretty standard Sun City fare; flat, small greens, straight forward layout. Greens were in good shape, on the hard and slow side. People who frequent this course don't seem to care about fixing ball marks, there were plenty of them for so early in the morning. There was a particular 3 on the back which had a massive tree directly in front of the blue tee box, unless you have a 20 yard hook in your bag you're stuck bailing out to the right side of the green. For $40 there's more interesting courses in the west valley. Staff was nice, facilities show their age.
Wigwam Resort - Blue Course
Played On 01/13/2018Fun short course
First time playing at the Wigwam. Staff was very friendly, course was in great shape. Bunkers filled with lots of soft white sand. Greens were smooth and fast, with challenging pin positions. Finished 18 in 3.5 hours.
My only two complaints are: the driving range was bare, hitting off dirt. The course is incredibly flat, without the well placed bunkers this course would be very boring.
Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
Played On 12/30/2017Dry
Corse is dry, like dead. I get that Bermuda goes dormant, but it's a little excessive. Tee boxes resemble sand traps, with bits of grass that was last green during the Bush administration. Greens were bumpy and slow. Started about 40 minutes after our scheduled time, with no explanation or apology from the starter, in fact he eventually gave up and disappeared, leaving us to guess when it was our turn to go. The final parting gift are bunkers filled with a thin layer of fine sand, mud and pea gravel.
The course layout is their only saving grace, offering a wide variety of shot placement vs power holes. Front nine is excellent, back is a little more cookie cutter. Will give it another shot when they turn the sprinklers back on.
