Same old muni

The greens are the best part about the course right now. They're in great shape but rolled painfully slow with a lot of debris on them. It looks like they haven't been cut in a few days.
Fairways are another matter, especially on 10,11,13 and 14 with lots of bare spots, ruts, and rocks. Hole 11 needs to be closed so the fairway can be fixed.
If you can find a deal on GN, it's worth it. But it's a crime with the rates they're charging cause the course is not worth the $55-$65. You're better off playing somewhere (anywhere) else...

Beautiful course

I play Mt Mitchell at least once a month, it's one of my favorite courses. As others have said, there are 5 or 6 greens that have a fungus issue but the staff does a good job of working around that. Maybe some tree trimming or removal would help, but they still roll true.
The fairways and tee boxes are in great shape! The bunkers are in good shape, a few could use a rake job. Please rake your footprints!
With the leaves changing colors, now is the time to get out and play! Bring your camera and buy some fish food to feed the humongous rainbow trout!

Nice walking course

Broadmoor is in the best shape I've seen in quite some time. The fairways were full and great lies everywhere. The greens were pretty quick and rolled nicely. I wasn't in any bunkers but they looked okay. And scoring a Hot Deal makes it a great value!
My only negative is the range balls are old and need replacing. A small basket costs $8.00 and you only get about 20-25 balls.

One of the area's top 10 courses!

As a long time player and fan of Springdale, I have to say thank you, thank you, thank you! The course is in the BEST condition I've ever seen from tee to green! The superintendent has done a phenomenal job of restoring and honoring the legacy of Springdale. It's playable and challenging to players of all skill levels, and lucky hole #13 (The Spasm) is much more enjoyable to play after some much needed tree trimming. The staff is courteous, friendly, and show their appreciation of your patronage. All courses would do well to follow their example.
I highly recommend you skip the outrageous $52-$59 fees to play the ridiculous goat-track muni course in Asheville and get a Hot Deal on Golf Now to play Springdale, it's well worth the 40-45 minute drive.
And just a side note to the staff: my condolences on the loss of Cab, one of the finest men I've ever met. He exemplified how to serve and be an ambassador for you and Springdale. May he rest in peace...

Slow, wet day

I've been playing Springdale for 35 years and I absolutely love this place! The new owners have done a fabulous job restoring the course back to it's former glory, and it's definitely a course to put on your must play list.
Unfortunately, it had rained quite a bit the previous day and the course was so wet that it was cart path only. The grounds crew hadn't cut the greens so they were really slow, but they started drying out about the 10th hole and putts started rolling true. The fairways were sloppy but in wonderful shape, good lies everywhere! The bunker sand was heavy and packed from the rain, but I know they're just fine when it's dry. I only found one bunker, and I shouldn't have hit it there. My playing partner didn't find any...
The only negative was the pace of play by a 3-some that didn't play well, and weren't able to keep up with the group in front of them. When we teed off on #1, they were on the 3rd green and there were 3 groups between them and us. We caught up with them on the 6th hole as they had let the other groups play through. We waited at least 5 minutes for each shot, and it took them 2-3 shots to get out of range before we could safely hit. While we were waiting for them to clear the 10th green, one of them yelled at us to ask if we'd like to play through and we said yes! We hurried to finish the hole and made it to the 11th tee...only to find that they were out in the fairways playing their 2nd and 3rd shots. Sadly, it took 2.5 hours to play the back nine. The Spasm took 25 minutes alone!
I'm all for everybody playing this great game and having equal access, but you need to think about the consequences of slow play. The nearest group behind us was at least 4 holes back at the turn so it wouldn't have bothered this group a bit to wait 3-4 minutes while we played through. And there were at least 3 times that the solo player would leave their cart 30-40 yards back from the green because they didn't make the green. They would pitch on, walk to the green and putt out, then have to walk back to the cart. And before moving to the next hole, all 3 of them would clean their clubs, put them in their bag, and then go to next tee.
Most of the nicer courses I play have a course ranger to assist pace of play. After reading reviews, I'm beginning to feel this is an issue at Springdale. I know your members come first and I respect that. I also appreciate that you allow the general public to play this amazing course. But you need to educate your members about awareness of their pace of play.
As a wise old golfer said, "Golf is the game of a lifetime, it shouldn't take a lifetime to play"...

Another 5-star day at The Crossings!

I absolutely love this course and the challenges it presents. Great conditions for this time of year as the greens rolled fast and true. Birdies are available and in abundance IF you don't get above the hole.
As I've said before, this course is well worth the drive over the mountains from NC. Keep up the great work and I'll see you soon!

Always enjoy the course, and GREAT STAFF!

This was my 4th time playing the Crossings, but I would play it every day if I didn't live almost 2 hours away in the mountains of NC. I went by myself hoping to get paired with someone else but played as a single.
It was a cold, sunny day with wind chill probably in the 20s, and the course was under a frost delay. I was scheduled to be behind a group of about 20 players. Once the delay ended, the starter sent me out first because there were only foursomes at the time. I wasn't able to get his name, but THANK YOU for letting me go first cause I would have been miserable playing behind them having to wait. This is a GREAT example of a starter doing his job PERFECTLY!
Some people have complained about the staff here, but I have always been treated like a member at this course. I guess some people are just naturally bitter and grumpy. And the members I met on the putting green were friendly too.
The layout of this course suits my game perfectly and it is a fair test depending on which tee you play from. I'm 69 years old but still hit the ball far enough to play the white tees. I think the senior tees would be too easy for me.
Since it was the first day of winter, the conditions aren't prime, hence my lower rating. (This is not a knock on the course) The fairways are kinda thin in spots but still provide good lies. The greens were a little bit slow but rolled true. There are a few that have some dead spots that detract from the appearance. I'm sure they'll be improving once spring returns. I can't speak for the bunkers cause I didn't land in any, but they looked like they were in good shape with plenty of sand.
All in all, Crossings is a course I highly recommend not just for the staff and layout, but the beautiful mountain views on most of the holes. I look forward to seeing you guys soon!

Fun little course

Played on 10/29 with my wife. We drove 2.5 hours to play this gem of a course and I will definitely return to play again. The staff inside are very friendly and welcoming and they were able to get us out early.
The course layout is great and will challenge your game. As others have said, be aware of the false fronts on the greens or it will cost you. The greens rolled very well and putts stayed on line. The fairways are Bermuda and it's dormant right now but you still get a great lie.
The only negative things about the course are the greens were over watered and puddles on some of them. Multiple times I had to chip and my ball left a big mark. I've never had to repair so many ball marks in my life, and they were craters not scuff marks. There are several tee boxes that are out of level and have uneven lies. Also, they need watering cause it was difficult to stick your tee in the ground.
Please be aware that the cart path on the 18th hole runs parallel to the driving range and there is nothing to prevent balls from coming into the fairway. Keep your eyes open and lookout! All in all, I will go back and play again cause it's a fun course to play.

Pro shop staff are top notch, course is good

The fellas in the pro shop did a great job helping me with an injury I'm dealing with. I needed some adhesive tape and they exhausted all their efforts to assist me. I don't know why some people say they're rude, far from the truth. As an old fogey, I've learned to treat people with respect if you expect to be treated with respect. Dealing with the general public takes heart, and these gentlemen showed me theirs. So sorry I didn't get your names but I will be back...

The course played fast and firm, and you had to be careful with your approach or you went long. And chipping back downhill will test your game. The fairways had thin spots and hard pan in places, but you should expect that this time of year. The greens rolled very fast and my ball mostly held it's line. I did have a couple bounce off line by ball marks; FIX YOUR MARKS!

This is a good municipal course, so play it with a HD tee time!

Super friendly staff and a fun course to play!

My wife and I absolutely enjoyed our first round at Cattails and plan on returning. It’s an hour and a half drive for us over the mountains to Kingsport and well worth the time. From the staff inside (sorry I didn’t get your names), to the starter Dan (thanks for your help), and the maintenance crew, you can tell they enjoy their job and it reflects in their attitudes.
The fairways were kinda thin, but it’s early in the season. The rough was manageable and not too penal. The greens were receptive and rolled true. There are birdies to be made out there! The front 9 is pretty wide open and you can be a little loose off the tee but you need to hit it under control on the back!
I was having a great round until the “Cat Trap” got me! I was 1 under par going in, came out at 2 over. I made par at #11 (a tough, extreme uphill par 5) doubled #12 (way downhill par 3) by misjudging the wind and watched my ball sail over the green and disappear OB down the side of the mountain, and bogeyed #13 (drivable par 4 but risky). I was able to get one back on #16, a great risk/reward par 5. It bends to the right around a big pond but if you can hit your tee shot down the right side close to the water, you’re left with about 180-190 yards over the pond to the green. If not, you have to play around the pond.
All in all, we can’t wait to go back and play again and bring our friends along. I know they just aerated the greens on 4/25,26 but they should be fine within a few weeks.
I highly recommend anyone play the course. With 5 sets of tees to chose from, golfers of all skill levels can have a great time!

Please fix your ballmarks!

Played as a single on 12/28 and paired with another single and a couple from out of town. The greens were typical Donald Ross, don’t get above the hole and super fast with deceptive breaks. Sadly, many greens were bumpy due to people not fixing their ball marks and I had several putts knocked off line.
Fairways were okay for the time of year, and the rough was manageable. I happened to find 4 bunkers during my round, and they had not been raked. I’m a pretty good bunker player but it’s hard to get up and down out of a footprint.
Glad that I was able to play on a hot deal but it wasn’t that great because of the conditions. I suggest playing Broadmoor instead.

Course too wet from irrigation

Played course on 12/03 with an early tee time...
We are in the midst of a moderate drought and the sprinklers were operating when I got to the course. We haven't had any substantial rain for a few weeks so I understand the need for watering the course. But based on the amount of standing water on some of the tee boxes, fairways, and greens it appears they over watered the course. One tee box was on the back was so wet you couldn't find relief within the 2 club length limit.
On the plus side, the greens were very receptive so we fired at every pin. The greens rolled true and were still tricky to get the speed/line just right. Despite the water, fairways were in excellent condition.

Grounds crews were perfectly tuned in to quieting their mowers when we were close by. Chuck in the pro shop and Bob the starter are very personable and did a great job of getting us out on time.

My buddy and I were paired with a single golfer that's very new to the game. I can play golf with anyone cause I'm very outgoing and like meeting new people. I have "mentored" many newcomers as a way of passing along what was shared with me. The single we were paired with was very outgoing and pleasant to be around.

Nonetheless, I must say to all of you that are new to this great game, please take the time to learn proper etiquette on the course. Things like: don't take practice swings or talk while someone else is preparing to hit a shot, don't cast your shadow on your playing partners line of putts, don't step in someone's line on the green, and don't take more than a couple practice swings. Please don't over think each shot cause "analysis is paralysis" and it causes tension in the body and mind. Most importantly, be ready to play when it's your turn and always have an extra ball in your pocket in case you need to hit a provisional shot. Lastly, please spend time on the range to learn how to swing a club before you go out on the course, it will be of great benefit to all of us.

Golf is the game of a lifetime, it shouldn't take a lifetime to play!

Love this Ellis Maples design!

Boone GC is a "must play" course if you're in the area. What a gem of a course! I drove 2 hours one way to play the course and it's well worth the drive.
Even though it's getting close to the end of the season, the course was in primo conditions. Fairways were lush, greens smooth and true, and my playing partners were awesome.
Kudos to all the staff for making Boone GC such a great place to play!

Great round at Broadmoor

This was my first time playing Broadmoor in over 2 years and the course is in really good shape in spite of being wet from the rain. If you kept it in the fairways you had a great lie. The greens were smooth and rolled true but weren't as fast as usual. The staff I encountered were very friendly and happy to help.
If you haven't played here in a while, I definitely recommend you check it out.

The Rock is Coming Back!

This was my first time playing The Rock in about 10 years. I quit playing cause the course conditions got to be so bad... After reading reviews about the improvements I decided to give it another shot.

The Bermuda fairways are dormant right now but the lies are really good. There are a few thin spots but that's to be expected in the middle of winter.

The greens were kind of fuzzy, looked like they had not been cut in a couple days (we have had some pretty bad weather with snow and rain so that's understandable). However, they were still pretty fast and it didn't affect the roll of your putts. It took me a few holes to get the speed figured out before I made any birdies.

Others have said there's a lot of elevation change but that's not true. The course is flat for the most part with the exceptions of: #1 (downhill tee shot), #4 (2 modest uphill shots), #5 ( downhill par 3 that runs parallel to #4), #8 (extreme downhill par 3), #9 (extreme uphill second). On the backside, #11 and #14 are downhill par 3s.

This is a very beautiful course, especially Gauley Falls just across the tee box on #8. Take your camera! My favorite holes are the stretch from #10 through #15 and #18 (eagle hole)! And lest I forget, #3 has an island green.

A couple of negative things to address are the carts and paths. The carts are gas powered, old, and have duct tape holding the seats together. (I hear they will be getting new carts) The cart I had was dirty and mud stained, looked like it hadn't been washed in a long time as there was dirt and sand in the cup holders and glove boxes. Being a cart attendant at an exclusive CC, this is not acceptable. Provide clean carts!
The paths are pretty bad in places and will bounce you around if you're not careful. I also heard they will be upgrading them in the future.

If you haven't played The Rock recently, by all means, take the time to give them another look, you won't be disappointed. There are a few kinks that need to be worked out but it appears management is bringing the course back. So go, play, and hit it straight on #10!

I'm so pleased with what is being done here to restore this great layout and I tip my hat to the owners. Keep up the good work and I'll see you soon!

Covid guidelines being ignored- 2 thumbs down

I booked a round as a single as I thought I would be able to get a cart by myself cause my wife is immuno-compromised. There was no mention on their site that carts were to be shared.

Upon check in, nobody was wearing masks indoors but the sign on the door required masks to be worn indoors at all times!. I was told they were doubling up on carts. I asked to walk as I prefer to (it is allowed) but they wouldn't let me. Pro looked down his nose at me and said (in a snarky way) something about the course being too hilly for me. Well I got news for you boys, I grew up playing mountain golf in NC and our courses are a lot steeper to walk than your little "hilly" course.

Because of their lack of concern and their arrogant attitudes, I chose not to play and took a loss on green fees and wasted time. I drove 1.5 hours one way to play the course.

I WILL NEVER give this place my business if this is how they choose to operate. Their lack of concern regarding the virus is simply appalling. We will continue to endure this public health crisis as long as people show the kind of attitude as the folks at Tri-Cities.

Nice links layout, a little confusing

First time playing here and I loved the links style layout! I'm a bit visually impaired and I found a couple holes to be a little confusing as to where to play. One of the grounds crew provided much needed guidance on the back nine, thanks.

The course conditions were a little rough but that's to be expected this time of year. The fairways are hard and firm so we got a lot of roll. Most lies were good if you kept it in the fairways. Make sure you have some kind of GPS or a range finder to help speed up play.

The greens rolled slow because they weren't cut and they were still recovering from aerification. Maybe 2 more weeks to recover? The worst green on the course is #15. It's in such bad shape that any pin placement will be within 5-6' of dead spots. It's borderline unplayable in my opinion...

Also, the course is very exposed, wide open, and doesn't have many forced carries. The wind picked up on the back nine and became what I call a "3 club wind". The 18th was dead into the wind and proved to be tough. I hate ending a round with a bogey!

My buddy and I are going back to play again soon but I can hardly wait to play it in peak season cause it has the potential to be an awesome experience. It's definitely a course that you need to play at least once!

Love hot deals here!

I haven't played Grove Park in a few years but scored a great deal on Golfnow and was glad I did! Let me say first and foremost that this is a great course, just not worth the over-hyped price they charge.
All of the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The starter let me go off early by myself in front of a foursome.
The fairways are in pretty good shape but people don't know how to use the sand bottles on the course. There were several divots that could ruin a good shot. People, PLEASE FILL YOUR DIVOTS!
The greens were freshly mown so my putts rolled true. These are typical Donald Ross greens with deceptive breaks so you have to watch your speed.
There are only 3 par 5s and all are easily reached if you have a decent tee shot. Your second shot on number 12 is kind of a blind approach so you might want to check it out before you go for the green.
The green on #13 is a roller coaster ride if the pin's in the back and your approach lands on the front!
I highly recommend GP if you can get a Hot Deal from Golfnow...
